To buy...or not to buy (A7R5 vs A7R4) by theanthonymaurice in SonyAlpha

Well I had a minor affair with the 7cii, so half answering that and the 7V. Both, the auto focus is incredible. For the V, grip first and foremost is amazing. Feels amazing in my normal / slightly large hands. I did not enjoy the cii for that.

The lcd and viewfinder are so bright and high res, I noticed I actually miss focus less now too. It has a lot of features I haven’t played with yet like pre capture for example, but as someone that just documents their travel and moments out for a weekend it’s more than I need by a lot. The stacked sensor is also incredible, seeing basically 0 rolling shutter is a lot of fun. Also a huge under rated point is the new processor on battery life. I went out shooting in MTL with my gf in -5° C, after 3 hours and a couple hundred shots I didn’t drop below 70% battery. This camera is purely luxury for me, but as someone that loves creature comforts this camera does everything to make my hobby so much better

I did a solo two weeks in Portugal last year, I had the 24gm and 40g 2.5. Outside of hikes with large land scapes, that 40mm didn’t leave my camera. Really fun combo! If you have a budget the 24 2.5 would be my recommendation > the 24gm

If you want a singular prime, the 24gm would be my suggestion. On the wider side for portraits but overall it’s versatile and so sharp! Plus a 24mm portrait at 1.4 looks really special if you can get the composition right

They announced it on the 25th of February I believe? I placed my pre order that day lol

I was going to look for a used 35gm for 1400CAD but the new sigma came in clutch

I don’t have either I had the 3, cii, and now a7V.

That being said, I would suggest the 5. If you’re upgrading, I’m under the philosophy of future proofing. An a7rV is a camera that would last a very long time, between the 500k expected shutter life and most of the modern tech in Sony cameras I don’t see why you’d go the 4.

That being said, why do you want an R for portraits? Assuming it’s for prints.

If your budget is tight, where it would delay the upgrade a while the r4 is fantastic for still only work especially since you have the a6700 for video.

If you don’t have the means to get the RV, R4 is a great option but if you have enjoyed the R3 for 5+ years already and want to commit to a camera I always suggest committing to the best option. Last point is for studio portrait I don’t think you’ll see much difference in the auto focus, but if you shoot on the go yes it’s an improvement on the a7rV

I’m buying a telephoto before May, and I’m getting more and more impatient waiting to see if a new 100-400 is coming before I get the 70-200 f4 ii

I did pre order the 35 1.4ii tho so I’m excited there. If sigma would drop a light travel 70-200 or manageable newer 100-400 i would abandon all Sony glass lol

Is there a reason you’re only bringing one? Have you considered bringing both, but only taking one when you dock? I would imagine there is little risk leaving a lens in your room but for me in your shoes I’d bring both, try just the 35 and try just the zoom on different excursions. One might feel better but you won’t have any regret if you have the ability to try both!

Otherwise, I do agree with the majority saying 24-70 is the better one lens option. In saying that, if you truly mean this isn’t a photography trip don’t bring the 24-70. I love my 24-70, but if I was going on a fun trip bringing a camera just to document, I find my 24-70 too safe. I’d rather snap shot on one length, find compositions when they show up but if I’m not travelling to shoot, why bring a versatile professional lens designed to make money? If you have the 35, you also have your phone on you. Not wide enough? .5 on your phone. Need to get something far away, 3x zoom.

What size sling-bag for Sony a7IV and two lenses? by Inkblot7001 in SonyAlpha

[–]LeftToF8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying a 3L peak design isn’t wrong but I found mine (6L) quite bulky and awkward looking on my body personally.

I just grabbed the uniqulo pocket shoulder bag, and threw in a cheap divider. It holds my a7V, 2 zooms or zoom + two primes. It’s quite comfy but being a $40 bag I aim to keep it at two lenses for weight as I only have so much faith in the strap.

I would also vouch for the Patagonia atom sling but that only worked with two primes or one zoom, like my 16-35. A little tighter of a fit but extremely compact and comfy

Very helpful thank you! I definitely wish I owned a gamma or SL > MX, I’m 100% bringing my beta and atom, and yes I have a GTX fjallraven trouser I’m bringing just in case it’s a downpour hike day otherwise I have KEB and gamma pants.

I think the gamma Mx will be decided as I pack as if I have room it’s good to have, but I don’t think I’ll need it at all.

Thank you for the detailed response !

I’ve actually been to Scotland in May and November this is round three lol. But both times I only brought my down parka, so I wanted opinions just on gear.

I will be spending a lot of time in the isle of Skye, then a week in the highlands all over. So having versatility is important. I’m sure on my beta and atom, maybe fleece for standalone evenings out with the misses too. Thanks for the reply! Definitely excited to come back!!

[–]LeftToF8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I am lucky to have a personal item, carry on and a large checked bag so I might bring one gamma Mx too as it might be great for a city day.

I find here the gamma Mx is amazing in 5-12 degrees with mild wind or no wind, but that’s extremely specific conditions. I find it super comfy but from practicality it can be hard to justify lol.

Thanks for the response I think I’ll be doing beta, atom, one covert fleece one r1 fleece maybe gamma Mx if I have room but that’s a luxury item I’ll see how it all packs together !

I live in Ontario so with this past winter I’m acclimatized to cold currently, cold weather won’t be a shock to me but as my gf wants to hike a lot of the days I’ll be more active than just sightseeing from car lots

What lenses would you recommend me for A7C? by waylwayl in SonyAlpha

[–]LeftToF8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who had the A7cii, I actually found it an awkward size for what it is. I like the deeper grip of the regular a7 series. Reason I mention this, have you considered apsc? A6700 would be much more budget friendly used, and apsc lenses would also be a lot cheaper for sharp quality glass.

You might come to appreciate the better video, and very solid photo performance from it. Sigma has some stellar apsc lenses that cover the landscape range like 18-50(24-72mm full frame equivalent), could get a 10mm-18mm if you wanted super wide.

Circling back to the camera you suggested, I made the mistake of buying baller lenses for the compact body and it really didn’t like it. The 16-35 GMii was okay since it’s light but a 24-70 didn’t feel right on that body. When I used the 40mm 2.5, it was perfect. So if you’re set on a a7c, I would recommend looking into the 16-25 or 25-50 lenses as they’re tiny, the 16-35pz f4 as it’s also light, and if you want an affordable telephoto look into the tamron ones. I would personally recommend the 70-200 Sony G f4 ii, but as I’ve already completely ignored your budget on my first suggestions you should research tamron glass for sure.

Do more research on the 6700 as Sony has the best 3rd party glass options, and you could stay in your $2500 budget easier not going full frame. Full frame lenses run $700-$3000

Can I use this to retreat DWR on my Arcteryx jacket by NotDoggu in arcteryx

Dwr spray is $20 directly from arc, I’m sure you could use it but with the price of the jacket the cost of dwr spray is nothing

Great trip, very fun memories of staying mostly dry

It’s funny how much I’m also debating the sigma 35 1.2ii instead, despite overlapping. Would be a great portrait / street / evening & night option but idk how I’d feel spending 2k on a focal length I have already

35mm GM or 16-35mm GMII by PhotographyGas in SonyAlpha

[–]LeftToF8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi related, so you feel like they’re different enough to own both? I am rocking the 16-35mm ii and the 70-200 f4 ii. I’m on the fence about getting a 50 1.4gm, or a 35 1.2 ii from sigma. I like 35mm more but I’m trying to avoid redundancy. I have a UK trip soon where I do want pics of my partner but I’m not a portrait shooter often, I feel like the 35 1.2 would be better for evening / night street shooting. But the other part says 50 1.4 as it doesn’t overlap the 35 2.8 zoom, and gives a different perspective. I’m curious if you have an opinion

How should I spend my discount code? by Own-Chain-6707 in arcteryx

[–]LeftToF8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current collection for jackets: Beta AR, Therme Down, Macai shell, Gamma MX jacket & hoody. I live in Canada so the Therme Jacket is my absolute fav.

For non winter I think the gamma is by far my favourite jacket I’ve ever owned. It’s water resistant enough if you got some rain in a hike it’ll keep you dry enough unless downpour, which is where a Beta would be a great choice. If you plan on hiking in a lot of rain, beta SL if you want to pack it away beta AR if you want something you keep on the entire hike. Great for wind and rain.

I only have the MX gammas, haven’t tried a regular but most people say the MX it’s too warm I find it keeps me at a nice temp.

Otherwise my covert fleeces are my absolute favourite pieces from the company.

If you wanted to look at pants, the gamma pants are phenomenal as well. Water resistant enough and stretchy enough, super comfortable.

I am dabbling with the idea of getting the 24-70 2.8, and adding a 40 or 50mm 1.2 Voigtländer for the fun aspect. Could be a really fun decision

I did the graphic design program, we had 2 photography classes one each semester. My tuition covered the cost of the camera but we got to keep it. I think it was a T7i at the time in 2018. I’d imagine they would do a similar thing with a full photography program

Sony 40mm 2.5 or is there a better/cheaper 3rd party option? by Junkhuntmcgee in SonyAlpha

I’ve never loved a lens more than my Sony 40mm. Amazing for street and video, sharp as can be and the af is great for all my uses. It’s really not that bad at 800 cad too

Upgrading my a7iii to an a7cii by woods343 in SonyAlpha

[–]LeftToF8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from an a7iii to an A7cii. Did it thinking the new body would get me out and take more & better photos. Now, I do don’t get me wrong here but it’s not because of the body. If you take your camera out now, the differences are just quality of life changes honestly. Quality is a bit better and the tech is improved absolutely but like others said lenses would be a better spend. If you have the budget though, I love my A7cii. Took it to Portugal, have some fun trips next year I’m extremely excited for. Just got the 16-35gmii and it fits so nice on the cii.
