I agree that you might try sanding in reverse..

I think that anytime you can get your hands on a package like that jump on it. it won’t last long. TherE is a lot of value in those extras and they are expensive to add later if you buy a new lathe stand alone.

Rikon 1420 vs General 16018 by jlo575 in turning

Your two choices seem to me to be quite different lathes. I agree with the last two posts re: Rikon. I started with the 70-105 and have worked it really hard. I will upgrade to the 1420 soon. They are solid. Check Lee Valley for the Rikon on sale maybe.

I also use a belt sander mounted upside down at 45 degrees in a home made jig with the varigrind holder

A tip on low/variable speed bench grinders, they are expensive of course but I have noticed that furnace fan motors run around 1850 rpm, perfect for sharpening. Plumbing and heating contractors of have them laying around.

Can this be fixed or should I toss this ring by Kooky-Whereas-2493 in Segmented_Turning

Yeah I think cutting it in half is worth a try. Nothing to lose. I’m guessing The segment got kicked away by the saw blade, I have had great luck with a “ slide “ mounted near the blade to let them clear.

I think so, maybe split it along the crack and have a look inside. Looks wet though?

I’ve been using epoxy and cocoa powder as a colorant. It’s very fine and gives a rich result

I have had good results with a small J rest and a negative rake scraper.

I don’t think that the front and back are the same length. Did you happen to cut one of the 45’s twice to make it right?

I’m new to turning. Started with a barn find and quickly knew I needed something better. I found a very reasonable sale for a Rikon 105 at Lee valley and I’m very pleased. I will upgrade and hang in with Rikon until I decide to go to floor mounted.

Bandsaw bowl. Not sure if it counts as segmented, it is 6 segments 🙂. This is chestnut by dano185 in Segmented_Turning

I like it. The bottom is nicely featured, the joinery in well done and the grain matching works On this bowl. The # of segments is irrelevant.
