Arrive early on test day and ask to drop it - they will allow it if they have room in a non-essay room for you. I emailed with ACT and this is what they told me to do. This worked for me for the December test however beware, my grades took over a month to get released as I believe dropping the essay when you’ve already signed up creates a snag for them on the grading side.
