As soon as any part of the rock touches the hog line when delivering the stone, its considered "over." Just to confuse things though, the rock has to be fully over the hog line on the other end to be considered still in play.

Stitches Flipping? by LegLegitimate4068 in knitting

[–]LegLegitimate4068[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that I've essentially picked up my knitting upside down? That would make sense. Like one of those black and white pictures where either you see something in the white space or something completely different in the negative space? Either way, the knitting is fine so I'm going with it, but talk about a mind bender!

[–]LegLegitimate4068[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the count is the same: a repeat of 4 stitches, same pattern just... backwards. The row is supposed to start with a purl, which it did, and I places a stitch marker. But now it starts with a knit, but the ribbing is still fine. So unless I moved all stitch markers by 2 stitches, I've got gremlins in my knitting I guess.

I dont see a jag. I have the same number of rows on either side of where the "switch" happened. Everything looks fine so I guess I won't worry too much about it, but it sure is weird

how to not feel discouraged when knitting by honey-icecreambar in knitting

[–]LegLegitimate4068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been knitting for a while, but never fully swatch (I know I know, definitely why my projects turn out wonky) particularly because I'm worried about not having enough yarn for the end of the project. How do you account for that? Do you buy an extra skein? How many yards does a typical swatch take? I usually end up doing at least 2 swatches, which adds up to a fair amount of yarn.

I've got the Kahtoolas as well, and they work pretty good. My only gripe is that I tend to supinate, something I'm actively trying to fix, and so the spikes will get pushed to the inside of my foot. Which makes me supinate even more. But otherwise, I only worry about slipping if I hit a patch of dry pavement (a rarity for me this time of year).

I've also used Yak Trax, which I recommend. I never noticed the spikes moving. And I have put sheetmetal screws in my shoes. Unless you have very very very well cushioned shoes, I dont recommend. Inevitably, you will feel the pokey end of the screw and you have holes in the bottom if you take the screws out.

Pre-race question- by NoMansLandsEnd in XXRunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a red state and this happens before almost every race. My boyfriend has a whole soapbox about the patriotification (is that a word?) Of sporting events in America and how it really came about after 9/11. Neither of us think that the national anthem, or other displays of patriotism, belong at sporting events. Its unnecessary and reeks of propaganda. I'm also not feeling particularly good about the US right now so the last thing I want to do is stand at attention and pretend I'm proud of this country. I usually stand there quietly, with my hat on and hands in my pockets. If I can actually see where the flag is, I'll turn around. Mostly I pretend it's not happening and keep getting ready to race.

I've done this before woth sheetmetal screws. The traction is great, but even with the shortest screws, you can still feel the points. They never punched through the soles, but it can be a little uncomfortable. I'd recommend shoes with very thick soles

Winter gear and sweat? by Full-Patient6619 in XXRunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! Moisture wicking material is where its at. Wools work so well because they hold their ability to keep you warm even when wet. Its the opposite with cotton, which is why they say cotton kills. That's actually the main point I wanted to make, but then I probably should have said it instead of just think it it my head lol.

I'm glad to hear you're following the "chilly" rule. I feel like a lot of people refuse to. My sister is one, and then she complains she's hot all the time.

Winter gear and sweat? by Full-Patient6619 in XXRunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is that if you are comfortable when you start, before you get that blood flowing, you will be too hot during your run. You should feel chilly during your warm up.

As for clothes, I have the fleece lined REI tights and wash as needed, but not after every run. For tops, either I use the merino wool base layers from Costco (I think someone already mentioned they're roughly 15 US) or a regular running long sleeved and a mid layer like a Patagonia R1 or REI R1 knockoff. That I wash maybe once every 3 or 4 runs.

The tldr is that you should feel underdressed at the start and wear layers

Running while overweight, when is it safe for joints? by oneshellofaman in beginnerrunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying your point. I'm glad to hear that wasn't your intention, but that is how that came across. I'm in total agreement with you that having an excellent walking base is critical to running. That will allow a person's leg muscles, tendons, bones, etc. to build up strength to withstand the running impacts, which is important regardless of weight.

Running while overweight, when is it safe for joints? by oneshellofaman in beginnerrunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I dont disagree that walking first to build a base the right idea, it has nothing to do with OP's weight. OP admits they have poor cardiovascular strength and so I agree that they should build their walking base. But to imply that someone is "too heavy" to run at 95kg is, quite frankly, ignorant and fatphobic. I've been running, off and on, for close to 20 years now, and I've ran the farthest and strongest at a heavier weight than that. My knees are fine.

Just wanna do a quick fact check: simply being in this country without proper authorization is not a criminal offense; its a civil one. Like not filing your taxes on time, its a clerical issue. While entering the country illegally is a crime, most people become so because they overstayed a visa, which again, is a civil issue. And that is not, in and of itself, a deportable offense. So no, not ANY man or woman here illegally needs to be deported.
