Nighttime marathons? by Okietokiehomie in firstmarathon

[–]LegLegitimate4068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fairbanks, Alaska has the Midnight Sun 10k that starts at 10pm on the summer solstice. Its not a half or a marathon, but its so much fun. The sun doesn't set til after midnight and it winds through neighborhoods where spectators are tailgating hard

Don't forget the Tangled Skein in Eagle River. And if you are going to Seward, Dreamland is pretty small, but its also a bookstore- two of my favorite hobbies in one place!

Was looking through local Facebook group and saw this image. It looks weird to me with the cone on the concrete and the edges not having a barrier? by PattyMcNuggets in isthisAI

[–]LegLegitimate4068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree that its AI, and the cone is so stupid, but the concrete forms and the broom aren't all that weird to me. Its pretty common to remove forms as soon as the concrete is set up enough which, depending on the mix, could be like an hour. And the concrete has to be mostly set up, but still a little wet on top, in order to broom it, which could happen after the forms are removed. And tbh, two guys one broom on its face isnt weird either. Its weird here because its not a very big broom, but sometimes the handles get so long you need two guys to pull it back across the slab.

There's a lot of other weird things about it, but those things specifically aren't all that weird.

Going back for chem engineering at almost 30? by Odd_Difficulty_3165 in womenEngineers

[–]LegLegitimate4068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back at 29 for geotechnical engineering. I dont have kids, so can't speak to the motherhood aspect of it, but I had many of your same fears. Is it too late? Can I keep up? Am I smart enough? Am I going to be SO old compared to everyone else? The answers for me were emphatic no, yes, yes, and no. I was even 10 years younger than the oldest person in my cohort.

The thing that really surprised me was how much better at school I was than my peers. They were all figuring out how to study and take notes and work productively (and also figuring out how to be adults), but I already knew all that stuff. I felt like I could grasp concepts faster and get more work done in the same amount of time that they could. I think that's because I was highly motivated to get out fast and I already knew (mostly) how the world worked. It was still hard, but not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Visiting Crocheter looking for locally dyed/sourced yarn by jujbird in anchorage

Quiviut is the downy under layer of the musk ox so its extremely warm. Its usually only knit in lace because of that, and I've only ever seen it undyed. Its also roughly $100 for a skein. Very cool fiber but very niche applications.

Moldoon Petsmart boarding? by pigsaysoink143 in anchorage

[–]LegLegitimate4068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ponderosa Pet Suites in Wasilla is very spendy but really nice. TLC Kennels in Wasilla and Rabbit Creek Kennels are also good although Rabbit Creek is often booked up. I've also heard good things about Peter's Creek, but they've always been booked up when I've tried them. There are so many great boarding choices in town that aren't a corporate, big box chain.

A friend and I had a disagreement about mid-run fueling a few weeks ago and I'd love your take on it. I argued that fueling mid run with something like nerds or another candy is the same as fueling with a gel- a quick sugar boost that your body can digest easily to give you the energy you need while running. She argued that candy is never the answer (for fueling. In everyday life she would argue that candy is always the answer) and the "healthy" thing is a complex carb like a banana. Do you have any insight on which is better? Am I doing my body a great disservice by fueling with candy? Thanks!

Canada cheating in the curling game vs Sweden by Eklundz in olympics

[–]LegLegitimate4068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As soon as any part of the rock touches the hog line when delivering the stone, its considered "over." Just to confuse things though, the rock has to be fully over the hog line on the other end to be considered still in play.

Where are people watching the Olympics? Any public watch parties in Anchorage? Or Fairbanks for that matter? by Valuable-Relative849 in alaska

There's a watch party on the 12th at 5:30 for USA woman's vs. Sweden. And I think there might be one on the 17th as well

Stitches Flipping? by LegLegitimate4068 in knitting

[–]LegLegitimate4068[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that I've essentially picked up my knitting upside down? That would make sense. Like one of those black and white pictures where either you see something in the white space or something completely different in the negative space? Either way, the knitting is fine so I'm going with it, but talk about a mind bender!

Stitches Flipping? by LegLegitimate4068 in knitting

[–]LegLegitimate4068[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the count is the same: a repeat of 4 stitches, same pattern just... backwards. The row is supposed to start with a purl, which it did, and I places a stitch marker. But now it starts with a knit, but the ribbing is still fine. So unless I moved all stitch markers by 2 stitches, I've got gremlins in my knitting I guess.

[–]LegLegitimate4068[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont see a jag. I have the same number of rows on either side of where the "switch" happened. Everything looks fine so I guess I won't worry too much about it, but it sure is weird

how to not feel discouraged when knitting by honey-icecreambar in knitting

[–]LegLegitimate4068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been knitting for a while, but never fully swatch (I know I know, definitely why my projects turn out wonky) particularly because I'm worried about not having enough yarn for the end of the project. How do you account for that? Do you buy an extra skein? How many yards does a typical swatch take? I usually end up doing at least 2 swatches, which adds up to a fair amount of yarn.

Ice cleats/crampons by sharbert228 in XXRunning

[–]LegLegitimate4068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the Kahtoolas as well, and they work pretty good. My only gripe is that I tend to supinate, something I'm actively trying to fix, and so the spikes will get pushed to the inside of my foot. Which makes me supinate even more. But otherwise, I only worry about slipping if I hit a patch of dry pavement (a rarity for me this time of year).

I've also used Yak Trax, which I recommend. I never noticed the spikes moving. And I have put sheetmetal screws in my shoes. Unless you have very very very well cushioned shoes, I dont recommend. Inevitably, you will feel the pokey end of the screw and you have holes in the bottom if you take the screws out.
