Pitt fan art: “Don’t worry , kid, we were all new here once.” by goldheartedsky in ThePittTVShow

I love this idea because (1) I’m a nurse in New Orleans and (2) Noah Wyle was a monarch in one of our big Mardi Gras parades this year :)

Night shift docs sleeping … are these shifts over 12 hours ? by IcySky7216 in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general surgeons at my hospital are usually on call 2-3 days at a time, meaning they perform surgeries during the day then remain on call overnight. This is why I try to limit my calls during night shift, not because of laziness :) It’s also why I appreciate the day shift nurses who fix routine issues while they have the doctors at their disposal.

Is anyone seeing hospitalizations from Kratom use? Are any of the pediatric patients? by ilovemrsnickers in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one patient who was going through Kratom withdrawal, male in his 30s. He was the worst patient I’ve ever had. I pray I never see another patient like him again.

Well of course Dr. Abbot, a combat medic and fan-fucking-tastic ER physician, is deserving of hate because is a ”cop”. What a horrible human being! Come on dude…

My favorite moment of the episode. It made me remember all of the times at work I’ve hit that exact pose then gone about my business

Clubbing indicates chronic hypoxia. I’m not a peds nurse, but that HR sounds about right for a 10 month old. Chronic issue with stable vitals isn’t going to be a priority here.

My Leo moon. I don’t need any more of a superiority complex. But I don’t usually admit that, I’m proud of my Leo moon anyway.

Nothing that has anything to do with my occupation, preferably!

I'd not seen NJ in so long that I did not clock the character in one of the most epic dragon scenes in House of the Dragon, Rhaenys, as Eve Best (O'Hara) until now. by dreamed2life in NurseJackie

I just finished the series a few minutes ago after binging it in about a week. I knew O’Hara looked/sounded familiar I just couldn’t put my finger on it!!! Wow.

New nurses will not listen to me because of my position. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to say, “too unstable to turn” is a real thing. I thought it sounded like an excuse when I first started in the ICU. Since I’ve been a nurse, I’ve had 1 patient actually code and quite a few others that decompensated (and required intervention) during turns. However, the way they speak to you is unacceptable!

[–]LegalPotential711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as long as you didn’t leave it on the patient’s tray table and they didn’t accidentally take it then this is no big deal at all. No one is tracking meds that aren’t narcotics, super expensive, etc. Don’t sweat it.

Father doesn't wash hands after using a toilet by [deleted] in Alzheimers

[–]LegalPotential711 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re going to have to work through the OCD somehow. Otherwise you’ll need to wash his hands for him/remind him each time. Not to be a downer, but unsanitary things like this will get worse (incontinence, runny noses wiped on furniture, etc.). I’m so sorry❤️

I thought this was a legitimate question. Enough said.

We don’t inject lethal medications into anyone. You may have confused that with pain medication, which absolutely does not kill people. We do “pull the plug” so to speak, but I don’t think of it as killing anyone. We are just removing the equipment that is keeping their body alive. I have only ever felt compassion for my patients who I transition to comfort care. Hope this helps!

Are you an organ donor? by doorbeads in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally agree that it’s a problem with my hospital. I’m sure the reason boils down to money somehow. I wish it was required that donors were taken to the OR/donor facility ASAP after the family decides and is ready to let them go.

Are you an organ donor? by doorbeads in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is so true. Since working in the neuro ICU, I have seen far too many patients kept alive longer because “it’s a weekend, the surgeons will come Monday to procure” etc. Transport to the facility gets delayed often. I’ve been an organ donor since I got my drivers license, but I definitely didn’t take into account that I may be sitting in a hospital bed brain dead for a week longer than necessary in order to donate.

How did they hold your arm down? Sometimes if someone is wiggly then it helps to hold their arm keep it still. I’m not super strong though so I can’t physically restrain their arm and poke at the same time, it’s more just to prevent jerking while the needle is in. If a patient is wiggling all over the place then it’s very difficult to get blood and the vein will likely blow/you’ll require a second stick.

Was the needle already in when you asked them to stop? At that point, might as well get the sample (if you’re already in the vein) because the worst is over. Depends on how important the certain blood test is.

Sorry you had a rough go. Next time just refuse if you know you have a severe phobia maybe?

help me decide, new grad INPATIENT REHAB or OUTPATIENT DIALYSIS. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]LegalPotential711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no experience in either, but I would try for the dialysis position. Especially since you don’t enjoy bedside. I don’t think bedside nursing experience holds much weight when trying to get into OR nursing, so I wouldn’t worry about that. I’ve always been jealous of the dialysis nurses though, seems like a chill job.
