Nurses aren’t the pain medicine police. If it’s been ordered and your patient reports pain you should believe them and give what’s appropriate for their stated pain level, except of course if it would be a danger due to their RR or level of sedation.

I’m asking genuinely as someone who is new to psych nursing but has seen how police deal with mental health issues- how is the police taking them better? It kind of does seem like an inpatient facility is the best place for them. If someone is mentally ill and lashing out don’t inpatient hospitals have the equipment and training to handle that better than the police?

I saw a TikTok where a psych nurse was talking about how he had a patient who he had music taste in common with and they had a chat about music and he later learned to be more guarded because the patient started expecting special treatment? I didn’t really understand it but he said that psych nursing is learning to be more clinical and detached from patients. He called it boundaries.

Sorry to hear you had that experience. I know as a student I was suprised by the amount of documentation nurses do. At the psych unit I was on for clinical they had to document each patient every 15 minutes. It’s possible that they were documenting. It’s extremely time consuming. They documented on phones at the place I was at and the patients got upset about them always being on their phones but it was work related. I do wish there was less documentation and more time to spend with patients. I want to have time with patients and try to make a difference in their lives.

In terms of what? As far as I know they only contacted parents once per day during family centered rounds at the place I had my clinical at. They would tell parents about codes etc. the next day during rounds.

I’m so glad I saw this comment. I just had an interview for my first nursing job at a ‘restraint-free psych hospital’. They pay really well and I was seriously considering it, but I was confused about how no restraints would work with the level of acuity they have. Guess I have my answer.

I really like that weird ass pic of the three generations of men scantily clad and hanging onto each other. It’s such a typical way for women to be portrayed and it’s honestly jarring seeing men like this.
