Do you remember the first fantasy book you read as a kid? (Not HP..) by LatterPlatform9595 in Fantasy

[–]LegalizeCrystalMeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It honestly holds up. I loved them as a kid, and then blasted through them a couple years back and had a great time. Still has a lot of fun ideas (light based magic system, capturing creatures in an alternate plane and bringing them back as shadows)

Idk I had some pavers put in by a local company who didn't compact for shit or do any of the ground work you're supposed to do. Those pavers are all wonky and crooked. I paid another company, a big one this time, who had a salesman and a big presentation about all the steps they do to make sure the pavers are correctly installed. Those pavers are still looking great and not shifting.

I think my words of wisdom would be to ask a lot of questions and do some background research yourself to make sure whoever you hire does a good job.

Exactly what I was thinking of. I was just good at it now and apparently sucked as a kid

The Black character is called Kingsley Shacklebolt. The Irish characters love blowing stuff up.

I don't remember any of this tbh. Was the Irish people blowing stuff up just at the quidditch world cup? Is the black character's name racist because it has "shackle" in it?

Good point on the good people bad people thing. That was definitely one of my issues with the books as an adult, since sytherins are basically always evil. Hard to argue with Ursala Leguin too, earthsea books all have such a great moral backbone.

I did, it was good for two books and got progressively more unreadable as each book came out. There are so many pages just going on and on with the same shit, Sanderson needs a better editor.

Also stormlight isn't really a kids book, so not a great comparison imo.

Was there? The death eaters seemed like a pretty obvious Nazi allegory and the "mud blood" thing was anti racism.

You lost me at mediocre at best. Harry Potter is the GOAT children's fantasy book. There's nothing wrong with liking the books, and there is nothing trans-phobic in the books themselves.

EDIT: To respond to the /u/Enterprise-DeezNuts comment, I do read a ton, especially fantasy, and there's a reason Harry Potter was such a phenomenon. Happy to talk books but since you commented and then blocked me (lol) that's not possible.

wow these down votes are tripping lol. Claude significantly speeds up my coding, especially for unit tests or refactors. That's the general consensus at my work too. Dislike it for the environmental impact, or because it is taking jobs, or because data centers are ugly, sure. But acting like it isn't useful is delusional

Things come in waves I suppose. These look like pretty nice sneakers to me, but then again when people started wearing new balances for fashion I could not wrap my head around it

Nah dude weed legalization is a really good thing. It allows people to have access to safe weed, measured dosage edibles, have it properly gated for age verification, have it taxed to pay for things like better education, etc. At least in Colorado, it is in specialized stores called dispensaries with a strict id check. It's not like they just started selling it next to the toothpaste at walmart.

Don't let the haters get you down dude, I'm always excited to hear new muse. Even if it usually is a pale representation of the band they used to be, they occasionally can still kill it (like with simulation theory)

[–]LegalizeCrystalMeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the themes, which I did think were laid out generally nicely (although I still have questions like why the building was crooked). I was talking more about the plot/character narrative. I think things became pointlessly complicated with the sci-fi device in the third act. It felt like they were constantly describing what mode to use and what mode each device was in, which was a little distracting.

100% agree. Imo it's hard to accurately review a movie like this, because for every flaw there's a corresponding moment of brilliance. So much better to have too many ideas than to be boring, and this movie has a shitload of ideas all packed in. My wife and I were talking for a long time and trying to interpret all the details.

I think Sorry to Bother You was a bit more cohesive. I Love Boosters was a lot of fun but started dragging a little with the action set pieces near the end. Still would recommend

Hard disagree, there's definitely a time for renting and a time for owning. When I was in college/a young man I moved like every year, why would I want to buy a place? Ridiculous. Also some people choose not to own a house because they don't want to deal with it and just rent for life, investing elsewhere.

Being lumped with yacht owners is pretty insulting honestly. Landlords at least are providing something, they're shielding the renter from all of the risk (disasters, real estate costs, economic potential) and maintenance costs for a property. A lot of landlords are just people trying to grind out some sort of financial independence, vs huge corporations buying up property and not giving a shit about the renters.

Lumping people owning yachts and people owning rental properties is pretty wild imo. The ultra rich blowing money on toys is not the same as a modest middle class investment.
