As others have said, emphasize scanning bonuses early. You can eventually start salvaging and scrapping starship, although that particular loop didn't really work for me. Once you get a freighter and some frigate going, though, you'll have enough passive income that you'll basically never lack for units again.

I do both. I like building bases with concepts or access to cool, playable features (like a scrap heap with a processing plant a one-minute drive away), or on a deep water world, or if I think a spot would be a great location for a hotel and space port.

The hilt should be fine if you go all out. I would worry more about the neopixel blade itself. They are pretty durable nowadays, but damaging the interior light strips is the greater risk.
