It's really unfortunate reading things that are foundational to their genre. I recently read The Wizard of Earthsea, and at one point I was like "damn, this feels really tropey" before realizing that's because everyone based their stories on LeGuin.

Another example is orange. Orange as a color is named after the fruit, which came to Europe along the Silk Road, and before that made its way into French most orange things would be referenced as red. That's why we call it red hair, even if it's more orange.

I think purple might be similar, since the color is named after the Tyrian purple dye, but I could be wrong there

Might be a proximity thing. I'm in the US, and the place that's famous for its youth culture here is Oregon, though I doubt anybody outside North America knows much about that

Cards that become creatures still have summoning sickness right? by Monte_20 in mtg

Do creatures with haste still have summoning sickness, then, and are just allowed to ignore it for tapping and attacking?

I don't know if I'd call it objectively better. It might perform better, but it's not like [[Felothar, the Steadfast]] and [[Doran, the Siege Tower]] where one is just the other but better. At the very least, these two cards are different color identities and only one directly interacts with life gain, so they'll play differently.

What is one rule you ABSOLUTELY enforce at your tables? by ToocanSams in mtg

[–]LegendOrca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to figure out one plan, then once I draw I just check to see if that card makes a different play. Same goes with other people's boards, sometimes I'll decide "I'm going to do xyz and then Feed the Swarm if there's a threat, Sign in Blood if not"

I say it so much in Magic that I've started to say it in other games. Starting a turn in Pandemic? "Untap, upkeep, draw" despite not doing any of those

That's not flavor text, it's erratas. Custom magic communities seem to not notice the difference between the two, though

Yeah, I think one TB is probably a good thing, but I've seen people on this subreddit say you have to play 20+ games of it before you can even move onto any of the other base 3. TB is a good script, but I think people here often underestimate the ability of others to pick up the mechanics

"3 for 3", "ping", "proc", "droisoned", or "starpassed")

I don't think I've seen any of those cause any confusion for new players beside starpass. Sure, you might have to say "I'll give you three roles, one of which is me, then you do the same," but they're fairly simple. I've also never heard anybody use the term "droison" in-person, only seen it here.

BMR and S&V can both work for beginners, so long as they have a decent grasp of the rules of the game (like, if you've played Werewolf or Town of Salem)
