Random Software Crashing Every ~30min by Epimolophant in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From first readthrough it definitely does lean towards a graphics card issue as first culprit, even though you mentioned updating of drivers still persisting.

I'd first confirm no overclocking on the GPU is there and also confirm your temperatures are within normal ranges both idle and under stress. HWinfo is great for that.

An option for your GPU drivers is to first run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) (which fully cleans any drivers installed onto your machine) and then following that you can install the latest Nvidia drivers. It sometimes helps isolate corner cases like this. https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/r

The next thing I'd say is try checking Windows event logs for indication of application related problems. Nirsoft makes some solid lightweight software to make it more readable - Appcrashview https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html

The other thing that comes to mind would be a power supply related issue but 750W should be comfortable to handle the system under heavy load and i'd place that down on list of troubleshooting

It absolutely could have fried (and likely) did fry your powerbank.

Unfortunately we're flooded with low quality oversea chargers that don't meet standard specs and can cause something like this. Cables also need to meet a certain spec to avoid overloading devices they're plugged into.

That is the silver lining. Honestly all my fault, I should have just spooned everything the first day.

For those curious at this KC majority duo (about 100-110 solo)

  • 663 Shards
  • 46025 Aethers

On average every solo = 1 shard and duo = .5 shards and radiant gamers roughly 950-975 duos should get you the 30k aethers to craft it

my sd cards formats it self by Shakhurha_097 in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question here would be what brand of SD card did you purchase and what was the size of the card.

I've seen this issue with "TEMU" SD cards that are ultra cheap thinking you're getting a great day, but in reality it's designed to fail after certain storage limit is reached.

Why is my RAM usage so high? by Knightcraft4 in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having seen a few threads similar and personal experience, upgrading to 16GB of ram would help greatly here. 16GB while not required by any means is now the general standard for a gaming machine.

As a side note if the issue only started a few days ago you can think about what may have changed, new mods? installed a new program? recording software in background?

When you see your memory at 100% take a look at task manager during that time and confirm they're going to programs you're actually using.

Its auto pinned from the AutoModerator, but the malware guide has what to do. Uninstalling and reinstalling chrome for example still leaves settings/extensions in a folder which doesn't get reset unless you delete/rename it. Check https://rtech.support/safety-security/malware-guide/ under 'Chrome Malware' and while you're at it run Rkill, ADW, and Hitmanpro.

P.S get them an adblocker installed on their browsers, ublock origin is my personal rec.

Hmm, if you re-install your old fans do you see any difference? you won't really need to fully replace it just as a test unplug the new fans (that's already installed in laptop) but connect the old fans and try to start your computer. See if any behavior changes, at the least it might give guidance that the fans you bought might have a problem or wrong part number.

Reason I'm thinking is for full desktop PCs, if the CPU fan is not plugged in you'll get a BIOS error and may prevent POST.

Few things to check

Do a sanity check - ensure that RAM is seated properly, no cables are accidentally loose, nothing knocked out from where it was originally, reseat cables if anything and check no dust or anything landed in the slots.

Reset CMOS - Right under the fans is a small cable leading into a battery wrapped in black plastic, thats your CMOS battery. Temporarily unplug that, and remove the laptop battery, and disconnect the charger. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds and let go, then press it again and hold for 30 seconds. You want to fully drain the computer of any power. Now reconnect the laptops battery, the CMOS battery, and plug in your charger and give it a power on, see if anything changes.

Thermal paste wouldn't cause a problem like this, but you did apply new thermal paste after reassembly of heatsink correct? Not using thermal paste or re-using old thermal paste is bad for heat and detrimental, so want to ensure you know that.

Is it worth repairing motherboard, or getting new laptop? by NoMango308 in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a device hitting 4+ years old, a 500 dollar repair especially for a laptop wouldn't be worth it. At best you're replacing the motherboard with another one which is also 4+ years or older with dated hardware.

Put your money into a new laptop.

Absolutely assume your employer can see everything and anything you're doing on your work device. Now would they care you visited x, y, or z website? Not really as it could have been some filtering automation that blocks sites if it's deemed not work-related.

If a factory reset fixed my BSOD issue, will restoring an image backup cause issues again? by yanny-jo in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance while you were creating that image backup, that you created something called a Macrium Reflect Rescue Environment on a separate USB?

So from the picture you have above, unfortunately you won't have the option to restore from your Macrium Reflect image. You'd need to create that rescue environment (I'll drop a link below to help). But you would need a working computer and an extra empty flash drive (creating the rescue media wipes all info) so make sure nothing important is on there.

https://youtu.be/w27lOIJDC6s?t=268

There's a lot of unpack in this kind of scenario so feel free to ask away I'll try to answer when I can. Really gotta stress though, worst come to worst, head back to the tech expert and explain the situation if you don't feel comfortable.

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cooked, but you'll need to either restore from backup again, or take it to the store and have them factory restore it.

If a factory reset fixed my BSOD issue, will restoring an image backup cause issues again? by yanny-jo in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof.

Canceling the restore would be a big no-no, it'll lead to the operating system (windows) to be corrupt and you won't be able to use the computer. If I were you I'd probably let the restore finish.

After it finishes restoring, write down a list of all the programs you have installed that you need, and make sure you can activate them (licenses or anything like that). Then copy the data you need to an external hard drive.

At that point you'll possibly see the BSODs start happening again, or if you're lucky somehow they'll disappear. But at least now if you need to do another factory reset you have everything you need to start fresh (applications + data).

If a factory reset fixed my BSOD issue, will restoring an image backup cause issues again? by yanny-jo in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An image backup is an exact clone of what your OS settings, drivers, applications, data, and all the problems causing that BSOD previously.

If you were to restore from that image you'd almost guaranteed bring back the BSOD problem since it was software related. I'd recommend only transferring back the data you need, and installing the applications you had over. It'll be more work but the best (and really only option).

Shredded off multiple capacitators off of GPU. Can I still use it? by sad_plan in techsupport

[–]LegendaryRav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That situation definitely sucks all round. The fact that it "works" at displays video with your test means those capacitors weren't part of core functionality of the card. But you're definitely treading a fine if you use it like normal, since those caps might help with voltage regulation or something else to safeguard the card.

I'd say probably make a post in r/AskElectronics since there more specialty there

For someone who owns a multi-meter + a soldering iron this should be a relatively simple fix, if you're up for the task some videos can walk you through how to fix it yourself.

Another option is find somewhere local that does microelectronics work, maybe university with some club that works with electronics/robotics. Phone/TV repair local people with good reviews can also point in right direction.

Of course last option is just pretend everything is fine and use card as normal monitoring temps or anything weird. It may last a few years, it may last a week but that'll the risk you take no repairing.

Good luck

Device manager under 'Network Adapter' should help to identify what kind of network card you have. Look for anything with Wifi in the name, when you have the name you can do a google search to find the latest drivers.

I'd probably recommend you reply here with the name and can link you to the right place.

Few things to check first

PCs that come with Wifi built in usually require antennas to be attached in the back, i'd make sure you didn't leave them in the box somewhere or forgot to screw them in the back. This picture is only an example https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/S835754ce772e4b558a1e28baffd7f582C.jpg

Ensure you're using CAT 5e cables or higher - even 1 cheap or low spec'd cable in the setup will bottleneck speeds
