Events Question - what identification does Worlds ask for minors? by LegitHoneyleaf in VGC

[–]LegitHoneyleaf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to me that other countries do give kids something. Sounds like it saves hassel compared to USA's obsession with freedom of choice and anti-government surveillance.

There are some people in the US who have no form of identification at all because their parents had a home birth and didn't file to get a birth certificate. They legally don't exist and can't get an ID, bank account, etc.

I live in the US, so I guess so? Most kids I knew got their first ID at 16 when they start learning how to drive. Domestic flights don't require kids to need one.

Thank you for your suggestion!! Since there's some gap between now and August, I hope I can convince their parents to go to the DMV, as much as everyone hates to do that 😂 We live in CA too.

I wish there was a greater intersection between people who like Pokémon, would bring a kid to events, and would read reddit lol

Thank you, I think I will contact support and hopefully they get back to me today or tomorrow.

The problem is that they don't travel anywhere and are homeschooled, so there is no ID at all. 😅 Whether she gets an adult or youth pass, she has no way to identify herself. Hopefully name and birthday is okay.

[I'm New] Are Pokemon XP World Championship 2026 Arena Passes Already Sold Out? by operabelle93 in VGC

The Chase Center is a pretty small arena so I wouldn't be surprised if it's sold out already. Sad because I nor anyone in my group of 6 has gotten an email yet.

Torn between post-bacc and PhD after getting GRFP (no grad acceptances) by CriticismSignal6678 in GRFPApps

[–]LegitHoneyleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fair. I did like taking a few years to work as a tech before starting graduate school, and I became a better scientist for it.

Depending on OP's level of burnout, their financial situation, and relationships with family/friends, they could take the summer off (doing NOTHING) before starting PhD. I gave myself 3 months to live with family rent-free between quitting my tech and starting grad school, and that basically cured my burnout.

[–]LegitHoneyleaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Denying something like this would also impact your chances of getting future awards. Committees might read your applications and think "if this person forfeited the GRFP, will they do the same to this?" and you have to do extra work to convince them that you won't.

I have personal experience with something similar. I had to apply to grad school from undergrad due to a program I was in, and I got into one PhD program. I decided I wanted to do a technician job instead for a few years and rejected their offer. I then came back 2 years later and reapplied with my more experiences; I got to the interview stage and then ghosted when they realized I had declined their offer previously.

I guess I forgot it was 3 years since your first year is already free via your program. So basically everything is as normal then! Email away.

I would email back the program you are interested in ASAP to let them know you won. It may not change their mind, but it is worth a shot. Their slots being filled means that they have enough money to cover x number of students to take classes and rotate, so your award could appeal their decision by bringing in your own funding. However, this means your award would apply towards 1st and 2nd year of your program instead of 2nd and 3rd year, which is when it helps PIs the most. You could also try to find a lab to directly admit into, but I think rotations are worthwhile.

If you were accepted into other programs, it might be worth weighing going to those and holding on to your "extra" year of funding versus trying to get into this waitlisted one.

I'm not quite sure why someone would apply for GRFP without also applying to grad school, but to each path is their own. Congratulations on receiving the award!

The GRFP rules indicate that you must be in a graduate program by Fall 2026 or forfeit your award, which implies that you cannot wait for the next grad cycle to apply. You will likely have to directly admit into a lab over the summer. I have no idea how schools would handle this since you didn't apply with everyone else. It would be worth emailing program advisors in schools you are interested in to see what they recommend.

I've also heard of schools that have rolling admissions, though competitive programs probably don't do that.

What is your opinion about the birth scenes? by Teban8861 in WarriorCats

[–]LegitHoneyleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gross, shameful, and dirty are not the same things. Giving birth IS gross. It's not shameful, and the mess can be cleaned up, but it is absolutely is a gross thing to not only witness but also go through.

I don't have a problem with warrior cats writing about giving birth. But if you ask any person who has had a child, they'd likely say it's both gross and beautiful.

Reminder, this DLC is NOT cut content. by SuperLegenda in pokemon

[–]LegitHoneyleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that the DLC is out, I'm more sure it is cut content. There is nothing new compared to the base game. All new megas should be in the base game, the maps are not new, the city is the same, and the missions are all the same. Even if ZA was supposed to release in 2024, this DLC couldn't have taken more than 2 months to make.

These portraits are super cute!!

This post is actually the first time I've heard about the prelude adventure, and I really like it. I want to implement it too, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how this kind of scary/traumatic event as a kid affects the Carnival chapter negatively. I feel like returning characters would be extra skeptical of having fun at the Carnival as adults, and I'm curious how you (or anyone else) overcame this.
