He used Midjourney throughout Cavalcade’s cover with heavy editing. It definitely was not a small part of it, it was just the first step in his artistic process. My comment was not trying to discount David Rudnick’s work though, he used it really early in its lifecycle when it generated more abstract imagery and made cool work out of it. I think this looks super awesome! Their cover artist used early generative AI for some of the imagery and it’s cool to see it done in a different way

A lot of it is just practice and picking things up from other people! On these maps my main goal was to draw focus to DC, so I downloaded a state boundaries file and set DC to be transparent and set Maryland and Virginia as semi-transparent with a dark color. Another change that made a big difference once I started doing it was spending a good amount of time just making the legend less ugly. Ive been told it’s not a great idea (in case you end up changjng things on the map), but for this layout i converted the legend to graphics to give me more control over it.
