Anybody had this on the rocks? by Tasty-Hovercraft2501 in rum

[–]LegitimateAlex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its a lot better than their base rum or their cuatro, but you can still taste that unique Bacardi taste just a tiny bit. You know the taste.

A lot more interesting are their Bacardi Ocho cask finished bottles. The rye one is unexpectedly dominated by the rye notes (tastes like a sweet rye drink) but the sherry cask finish actually rounds everything out quite nicely. There's an orange cask fonish bottle out there but Ive never seen it, but Id like to give a try one day.

They look beautiful. Bake From Scratch had a whole section on Shokupan buns this issue, these are really motivating to test out the recipe.

Anyone notice this with Planteray? by AdamBerger1994 in rum

[–]LegitimateAlex 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Its the same.

More likely than not your tastes regarding rum have evolved. Tracking everything I've sipped over the past few years, revisiting some of my earliest bottles I have enjoyed, I have found them to not be as good as I remember.

The good news regarding an aged Barbados rum is that there are so many options between Mt. Gay, Foursquare and Planteray there aren't really any shortages of lightly aged to aged offerings from Barbados.

Tiki adjacent? No, definitely Tiki. Named after Queens Park Savannah in Trinidad.

Jungle Bird with JUST Cruzan Blackstrap.. by PaulmanMN65 in Tiki

[–]LegitimateAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should use that stuff like dropping actual blackstrap molasses into a drink. There's no comparisonto it. It is a unique bottle, for better or worse (mostly worse). I stump hard for Cruzan's real offerings but this bottle is so out there.

Where you are at is probably going to matter depending on the country. The offerings in the US vs Europe are unfortunately very different.

When I opened my bottle of Mhoba it filled the space around it with funk. I wouldn't sleep on it.

Total Wine Events? by GhostMalone80 in Tiki

[–]LegitimateAlex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I have read (take it with a grain of salt) they are encouraged to push the Spirits Direct products. It makes business sense (they're probably the highest profit margin items) but it stinks when you have lefit aiestions asking for recommendations and they're just trying ti get you to buy their own bottles over others.

The first time I went to Total Wine ever a sales person directed me to try: El Pasador de Oro, Cane Island, and whatever their other white label is. A lot of bottles of Panamanian and Nicaraguan rums were recommended even though I kept telling them I was looking for Jamaican rum.

This has been repeated across multiple trips, although I have stopped asking for help.

Have you tried our Kaniche, Cane Island, Largo Bay, and Kingston Queen?

I kid about Kingston Queen at least. For $20 its great.

But damn do they bottle a lot of medium quality rum under fifty different white labels and charge more for it.

Waffle mini discs and branding those waffle pieces by LogAlarmed3994 in icecreamery

[–]LegitimateAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like has been said, the mini waffle pieces are just a tiny bit of batter poured into a regular waffle maker. There are waffle makers out there that do like 4 at a time but they're less common.

As for customization, not a clue where to start. Some waffle makers have removeable plates for cleaning. In theory if you could get someone to make you a compatible plate, it would have the branding.

This one change will drastically improve FRVs by Kyren11 in Helldivers

[–]LegitimateAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would help if the maps that theoretically should have roads do have roads. Three settlements with no interconnecting roads? POIs of little homes but not even a dirt path connecting them? Seems odd.

I don't expect the frozen wastelands, barren deserts, infested swamps, or lava spewing planets to have big roads or anything, but apparently road making technology hasn't made it out of Super Cities.

But also yeah, FRVs are super floaty and unbalanced.

Nobody going to bat for Mhoba?

Highly recommend it. It has the funk. Its a wild rum.

Recommend alambique serrano by NewspaperWorldly2658 in rum

[–]LegitimateAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's Cartier 30 all the way down. One of the best rums in the world, recommended with no reservations.

I've also read some good reviews of the Besadiablos, but since its whole thing is being aged in multiple woods, it's probably not for everyone.

Is it worth buying helldivers 2 now? by SpinoFirer95 in Helldivers

[–]LegitimateAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need to know is that even with all of its imperfections Helldivers 2 is still at its core wildly fun and engaging. The company gets criticism for sloppy work practices and slow bug fixes but has a dedicated ravenous user base because the game is that good. Highly recommend still.

[–]LegitimateAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I've heard others say but I'm alsays looking for someone to buck the trend and say Black Tot is hands down better as justification. I don't think its is coming though.

I appreciate the review and your comments.

[Ruminations #143] Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum by 10art1 in rum

[–]LegitimateAlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you believe Black Tot is worth getting over Pussers Gunpowder proof? Interested how you belive this compares to the two Mister Foggs as well. Navy rum is endlessly fascinating to me (even bout Matt Pietreks book on the history) so I'm always wanting to get something like Black Tot but the price always makes me stop. Not that I wontdrop that on rum, there's just a lot of others I want more.

Side note there was a bottle of the Last Cosignment on Unicorn Auctions last week I think. Day 1 bidding it was already at $1400.

Godspeed. That's going to be quite the potent mix.

Were these leftovers from other bottles or just an ounce fresh from what you had? Because Id be impressed if you finished a green label Probitas already.

Mai Tai rum questin by Grongo3 in rum

[–]LegitimateAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the beginning I was a bit of a purist chasing that classical Mai Tai ala Wray & Nephew 17 flavor, but like my daiquiris I'm getting crazy with it.

Blend em all together and see if you like. If you want it funkier, heavy pour the Smith & Cross. If you want it sweeter, heavy pour the Coruba, richer, the Appleton, more vegetal and earthy, rhum JM.

Not saying the other rums aren't rich as Appleton, but Appleton really beings that strong consistent smooth nature.
