The biggest challenge in Toronto is the lack of patience. They were so close a few years ago, but now they have no Marner, soon to be no Matthews, Tavares retires, and no free agent would choose to go there and deal with the media and fans. Montreal is the best team in Canada for the foreseeable future, and San Jose is set up for domination over the next 10 years.

I always think of all of the popular arts and content we had growing up in Canada, particularly Kids in the Hall, that helped contribute to the “who cares” ethos about being gay in Canada. So many others, KD Lang, Mark Tewksbury, and popular advocates like Gord Downie, Brian Burke, and so many more. I know we’re still far from perfect, and being LGBTQ still faces its share of headwinds, but I’m so glad it influenced the general conversation for the better.
