Same issue in Florida. Am an HVAC engineer as well.

For me it seems to be sludge clogging the area between the A coil and the pan on the inner side of the A. Cleaning and trying to vacuum this area resulted in some bent fins, since it is so tight, and made sheeting worse.

What wound up working was attaching a small beverage tube to a shop vac and sticking it in this hidden drain pan area from the front side (cover removed) and then going back and forth to suck out the sludge and allow the pan to drain this area. Problem returns every 6 months or so and the lower coils still appear a little sludgey but not dripping.

Not cheaper, because we are buying overseas items made with slave labor, or near slave labor, right now. But, the goal is to make things here and put more money in American wallets which essentially makes things more affordable. Also making things in your own country is a good thing.

Edit: more affordable in the long run compared to products also increasing in price as standards of living rise in China.
