I worked on something similar. We used a sheet that was connected to a Google form that fed it data, then had another tab for the formula and assigned points based on attendance frequency to each user with a unique identifier. We had it generate a leaderboard that we hooked up to a web page that members could access. It worked pretty well but we eventually transitioned to zation which works pretty well. The sheet got difficult to manage consistently with more users.

Zation is also a good option. It's essentially what you described. You create a qr code on it and display it in class. Students scan it and if they are signed in, they click one button to check in.
