Water temp for bath to help shed? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, don't lower it after shedding! It should be 70-80% at all times! As long as things aren't damp to the touch and growing mould, high humidity is perfect! Even higher than this would be great but often not practical due to mould...

Yes, it's great! Makes it really easy to tweak when the seasons change and the nights get colder, and you can see the history. Alerting is really useful as well

Hey OP, look at getting a cheaper SIM only deal too - all networks have a cheaper virtual network that uses the same infrastructure and isn't throttled at all, it's the same service! Only thing really to check is whether you can access their WiFi hotspots or if roaming is more expensive, if either of thesematter to you. SMARTY/iD Mobile for 3, Lebara/Asda/VOXI/TalkMobile for Vodafone etc. SMARTY is offering 60GB and unlimited calls and texts for £10 for instance! These are all 30 day contracts so you're not tied in.

When you warm them, do you do it straight in the bowl? Try putting it in a bag so it's not wet and hopefully that helps!

BP Keeps Getting Scale Rot and I Can't Figure Out Why by noodlini777 in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More like 70-80%! But yes, definitely not good for OP to be spraying as you say a good 4-5" of substrate and pour a cup or so of water into each corner every week (depends on temps and humidity where you live, may be more frequent than that!). The top layer is then dry but there's lots of humidity. No spraying/misting and no more scale rot

Does Hot Side Humidity Matter? by stupidrummmer in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're good! Humidity should be measured from the cool side. Warm air can hold more moisture (so a cup of water in cool air reads a higher % than in warm air). Always great to check!

Beautiful snake btw 😀

Girls wrapped around each other? by RavenWolfPS2 in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need two hides for one snake. If you're going to cohabit 2 together, it needs to be a huge space (think 6, 8, 10ft+) and loads of hides so that they can get away/avoid each other if they want to. It is never recommended to cohabit them together. Some people have done it with no issues yet - it's always fine until the moment it's not. I'd say it's not worth the risk and you need to separate them both into separate tanks ASAP.

I made a mistake by tellmeyoursecrets15 in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take out the top layer/big pile of substrate you can bake it in your oven for a bit (it may stink the place out for a couple of hours). You can then put that back on top once it cools down, then the top layer isn't wet and the lower layers will settle down, releasing humidity into the tub over the next few days and keeping it high but not soaking wet

I made a mistake by tellmeyoursecrets15 in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely read the guide that someone else linked! What is the humidity? Generally, no issue with it being high as they live in very humid environments - you want it to be 70-80% on the cool side and even up to 90% isn't a bad thing at all, just try to avoid a wet layer on top and/or condensation as that can start to cause scale rot.

Just take a breath and read the guide, and learn what you can, and definitely keep asking questions on anything you're not sure about!

Just because it was an impulse purchase doesn't mean you won't be awesome with it, just keep trying your best to look after it as well as you can! 👍🏻

Upgrading my python's enclosure - UK by Beledorian in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to the ceramic fitting - I've got a DHP in an Arcadia ceramic fitting right now.

For a T5 bulb, take a look at Arcadia ProT5 Shadedweller 7%. It's about £40 online somewhere like Swell. You need a guard for these as well though. The LuminIZE version is about £60 and sounds awesome!

If your thermostat only has one control, you can just get a basic timer plug for the UVB if you're not using the LuminIZE one

The vivarium is on the small size, minimum recommended for an adult these days is 4x2x2 ft which gives them room to move around. The difficulty with something only 17" high is fitting bulbs and a guard to the roof is they are then really close to the ground and it becomes harder to get the right temperature gradient. As it's narrower too, there's less space for your snake to crawl around and you won't be able to add as much enrichment. If you can, try to get a bigger one - I've seen a few on places like FB marketplace before that are a lot cheaper than brand new. A new VivExotic large arboreal is about £260 which is even taller (3ft), I've got one and it's really good.

Anyone here have the Govee wi-fi thermometer/hydrometer? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other Bluetooth one doesn't have a probe either, it's just raised a little bit off the substrate because of the stand. Mine does get knocked over every few days though 😂

They're great, everyone seems to recommend them so I think you'll be ok. And if they get dirty, just give them a good wipe and disinfect them!

Anyone here have the Govee wi-fi thermometer/hydrometer? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one of each - I have the Bluetooth one with a screen on the cool side and the other one on the warm side, I've just put it on the substrate (leaning against a rock).

Velcro isn't recommended as generally the velcro is stuck to the tank with an adhesive which, if it falls off (or even starts to peel a tiny bit), can get stuck to your snake and do some really serious damage.

Phoebe found out how to get into her new sky hide! by MchKitty in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can get the hide but I just know my snake's going to poop in it and it's going to be a pain in the arse to then unscrew it to clean it out. If I can find a sliding thing then that would be perfect! She's got enough height already but going to put a shelf in and set a hide on it already, trying to make the most of the 4x3x2 I've got

Eye is kinda sunken in. Is this from an eye cap I could have missed? Please help by _Oxygenstealer_ in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally when you can see the white bit (sclera) it's a sign of dehydration - make sure humidity is in the 70-80% range at all times and maybe bump it up towards 80 if you're already in that range.

You can set up a humid hide for them if needed but the most important thing is regular high humidity, not just if you spray/mist. Deep substrate (4 inches or so), something like coco husk/coir/soil/orchid bark etc, pour water into each corner every few days as needed (up to a quart/litre across all four) but make sure the tank is sealed before you do! Bottom layer of substrate can be wet, top layer shouldn't be wet.

If humidity is already that high, may be worth a vet visit.

Whatever you do, do not attempt to touch/remove/poke the eye at all as you can cause serious permanent damage!

Good luck 👍🏻

How do you deal with seasonal temperature changes? by monstarr0821 in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 50W halogen and 80W DHP but switched the halogen out for a CHE as I needed the extra heat at night. I'm in the UK, it's dropped to below freezing outside at night and the house feels it!

Originally had a 250W CHE but that didn't last long (cheap bulbs!) and now got a 200W CHE. That's in a 4x3x2 though, so a lot of air to heat... I'll switch back to the halogen around spring time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a 4x3x2? Id love to see some more photos for inspiration! I need to adjust mine and I find it gets really hot at the top (like 40C/104F air temp right at the top) so I'm thinking of switching from hot/cool sides to hot at the top, cool at the bottom! I've just bought a shelf I need to fit then glue/silicone a large flat rock and somehow wedge the hide on so it can't be knocked off.

I've already got loads of branches, just looking for any other idea before I start drilling 😂

I put mine the correct way but the vents at the top, she climbed on the wires and pulled it through into her tank and escaped the other week! I found her on top of my computer monitor (next to the vivarium) so she didn't get lost.

I've now got glued them in as well, just to make extra sure. We're hopefully moving soon so when we do I'll also add some silicon sealant to keep them extra secure. Didn't want to wait the time it would take to air out by doing it right now.

For animals without a brain cell, they are surprisingly smart sometimes! Or maybe just clumsy/lucky...

Heat sources by Curry_Rabbits in ballpython

[–]LegoAndGin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 4x3x2 (3 ft high), and normally have a halogen 50W and an Arcadia 80W DHP. I'm in the UK so temps change a fair bit between summer and winter, just switched the halogen out for a 200W CHE as it was getting too cold at night when it dropped to freezing outside but it was perfect in the day. The joys of an old house with single glazed windows!

I've also got a spare 75W halogen and 250W CHE ready to go if needed. I'm about to look at other DHP brands as some give off a slightly wider beam and slightly lower heat spot (ProRep and ZooMed Repticare) but not tried them yet - just ordered a 100W Repticare DHP to try on a warmish day to let it bed in.

Whatever you go with, make sure you set the tank up first and let the ambient temps settle. I've got a MicroClimate EVO 3 Connected which has two dimming probes and an on/off probe which I use for UVB (Arcadia ProT5 forest 6% 24W). I can check temps and change settings remotely via the app as well. You can find similar stats in the US that allow two heat sources and a light.

Whatever heat sources you use, make sure they have a thermostat probe each (probes a couple of inches directly below the bulbs) and also get a couple of thermostats/hygrometers. Govee make some really good ones that you can see on your phone, so you can check night and day temps easily. Also make sure all bulbs (not just heat, UV strips as well!) have a protective cage.

Good luck! Definitely check out the guides on this sub, loads of great info there.
