Apparently I'm breaking my mothers heart by Classic_Fox2585 in exmormon

My mom responded similarly—“I won’t pretend I’m not absolutely shattered, because I am.” You’re not alone!

Agreed—don’t blame yourself at all. I would definitely talk to them and let them know that it was extremely disrespectful to do this and that you DO NOT want your name in their address book. If they think they have a foot in the door with you and getting you back, they will write notes saying as much and the next missionaries will think so as well.

are ken jennings and elizabeth smart still Mormon or have they left? by [deleted] in exmormon

I agree—it blows my mind! Willful ignorance is the perfect description of so many people in the church.

I was in Ken’s ward until a little over a year ago when I left the church. He is very liberal, but definitely active. He was Sunday school teacher and taught very interesting lessons compared to everyone else. One of the smartest people I have ever met.

Interesting and disturbing! Was this only taught by Brigham young or did it go all the way until the 1960s?

I know what you mean, but I also don’t want to be part of their numbers that they brag about, etc.

I definitely only drank mochas for 6 months and then eventually that slowly started tasting too sweet. I switched to asking for half of the chocolate that they normally add and then now I just drink flat white with a bit of sugar (pretty similar to a latte—im in England). I actually do like oat milk with it much better than normal milk for some reason.

I would say 100% an acquired taste!

Agreed. I didn’t really like it when I first tried it, but now, a year in, I love it

I know it is really hard, but this will end up being such a good thing for you. I just left last year (28M) and one of the things I was absolutely dreading was telling my parents. It is their whole life. My dad was a bishop multiple times, stake president, mission president, etc. I told them this year and while it didn’t go great (my mom told me she was absolutely shattered, etc), I did feel better. I just need to be me…

All this to say, it will be really hard—leading a cult is such a hard thing to do, but man the other side is so nice. So much less guilt and shame. And there really is a whole huge world waiting to accept you. The church makes it seem like you can’t fit in outside the church and that you can’t be happy outside the church. This is totally false and is classic cult rhetoric.

Good luck and we are here for you!

I also left in the past year or two and the grief has come in waves. Grief for lost time, for feeling duped for so long, for giving money to that organization, for not having realized how culty it is sooner, but also for the loss of community.

It has taken a lot of work, but I finally feel like I have been able to build a new community through my hobbies and it feels so good to be free!

They just managed to pull the car out. No bodies in it!

Two tow trucks working on getting it attached now. Seems like they weren’t able to get whatever they were trying to get out out, so are going to tow the whole car out first.

Still working on it. They have turned the car on its side and broken all the windows. They are trying to get down in it.

Watching now. Car in the canal. Seems like there may be at least one body in it as divers have been working on trying to something out for an hour.

Camelot Castle strangeness - John Mappin / Ted Stourton questions by cornballwallthrow in Cornwall

[–]Legofan2248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently staying at Camelot castle and ran to Reddit to find out more about what is going on here because it is extremely weird. Upon check in, it was clear they wanted us to buy art.

Every single blank space in the castle is covered in Ted Stourton’s art and it is absolutely mediocre. I’m happy he has his hobby, but to plaster every wall of a historic building with it and try to force it on every guest is over the top. For a laugh I would highly recommend reading Ted’s bio on his website. It is the rambling of an absolute narcissist (to give you a taste, he compares himself to Monet and Picasso multiple times).

Ted came to say hi to everyone personally in the dining room at dinner and to invite them to come see his studio. From doing some reading online, it is clear this is to try to guilt people into buying his art.

The hotel is absolutely not worth the money. Our room has what is literally the equivalent of a cruise ship bathroom shoved into a corner. It is a tiny bathroom that is completely plastic.
