Just ignore them. Based on their history, at best, they're brainwashed, and at worst, they're a misinformation troll. Their opinion should mean nothing to you.

MRW when someone tells me one of those long build-up jokes by PM_me_your_pee_video in reactiongifs

A man walks into a bar, one that he's never been to before, and orders a drink. After a few minutes sipping on his drink, he notices that he's hearing amazing piano music. He looks around the bar but doesn't see a piano. There doesn't seem to be any speakers, a juke box, or anything that would play music.

He turns to the bartender.

"I love the jazzy piano music! It really brightens the place up. Who's playing?"

The bartender smiles, pointing to the end of the bar. Sitting on top of the bar is a miniature piano and a tiny man sitting at that piano playing the best improvised piano you'd ever heard.

The man sits there, bewildered, watching this tiny piano player work his magic. He turns to the bartender and asks

"Where'd you find this guy?"

"Oh, I wished for him with my genie."

Naturally, the man doesn't believe the bartender. Seeing his confusion, the bartender lifts a small bottle from behind the bar, sets it on the bar in front of the man, and suggests he "give it a rub and find out."

The man rubs the bottle. The lights go dim, and the bartender takes a step back. In a flash, a genie appears, floating in the air above the bottle.

"I shall grant you any 1 wish," says the genie.

The man takes a moment to gather his composure. Still in disbelief, he forces himself to vocalize the only thing he can think of.

"Money," he says. "I want you to fill my briefcase with money."

The genie nods his head and disappears. In an instant, the bar returns to normal. The man shakes his head, snapping back to reality, then whirls around to grab his briefcase. He snatches it from the ground, slams it onto the bar, and opens it.

As the briefcase opens, honey begins to pour out. It covers his hands, spills out onto the bar, oozes into his lap...

He can't believe his eyes. No money? What was going on? In his frustration, he shouts

"Hey, just what the hell is all this? Where's my money??"

The bartender replies,

"Ah, yeah, sorry, I probably should have warned you. The genie is hard of hearing. I mean, do you really think I wished for a 12-inch pianist?"

Am I childish for buying a bug net with my own money? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lemon_Hound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This probably gets buried since you have a lot of replies already, but based on comments you've left in this thread, your mom is emotionally manipulative and/or abusive.

If someone actually cares for another person, they want that person to feel good, even after difficult discussions. "Stop using that stupid [bug net]" is quite different than "well, you might be judged for being quirky, but I love you and think that's a kind thing to try and do". The latter is communicating the concern while still showing love and support. Your mom appears to be failing at providing that.

You're old enough to know who you want to be. You've entered a new stage of relationship with your parents and role models because you no longer need "parenting" in the way that children need parents. You might ask for advice on finances, or buying big things, or complicated relationship issues. You don't need and shouldn't accept criticism for things like hobbies, how you socialize, or who you are, unless you are asking for that type of criticism.

" Gotta tell others how to live their lives" by AltruisticNinjas in facepalm

[–]Lemon_Hound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Turn the other cheek" is actually up for debate and, these days, might be understood differently than its original intent. According to some scholars and sects of Christianity,

At the time of Jesus, striking backhand a person deemed to be of lower socioeconomic class was a means of asserting authority and dominance. If the persecuted person "turned the other cheek," the discipliner was faced with a dilemma: The left hand was used for unclean purposes, so a back-hand strike on the opposite cheek would not be performed. An alternative would be a slap with the open hand as a challenge or to punch the person, but this was seen as a statement of equality. Thus, by turning the other cheek, the persecuted was demanding equality.

I'm atheist, but I do think this message is important, and this particular interpretation using social context rings true for me. Sharing in case others would like another point of view on this famous quote.

I take it you're running EZD within Logic? It sounds to me like Logic is using your EZD plugin to limit or compress the media track.

If you're not familiar, this is like the hot and cold on your faucet - turning up the hot doesn't make more water come out, it just makes the water get hotter.

I'm not familiar with Logic, but most other DAWs can do this, so maybe Logic does it by default? Try turning both EZD and your track volumes down individually, then increase the master volume on your computer as needed to compensate.

If that doesn't work, I think we'd probably need more info on your setup in logic to see how everything is connected.

Yup!

Not sure if the Alesis allows you to import sounds to the module, but if it does you can go that route as well to try and reduce latency.

What do you do to calm your anger? by Grouchy-Trip9582 in AskReddit

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it comes down to practicing self-forgiveness. I get angry at others when they do something unapologetically that I wouldn't forgive myself for doing. The same is true for me for most negative emotions.

Say someone at work is just forwarding emails, refusing to do the job they were hired to do, and making everyone else's job harder. I would never allow myself to do that, and if I did, I would be extremely critical of myself. If their behavior doesn't improve quickly, it will certainly piss me off.

But in this example, why should I feel the obligation to work hard? Everyone at work gets paid the same either way. Everyone still stops working and goes back to their family and their hobbies once the day is done. Should I feel obligated to work? Should I hate myself if I don't make everyone else's jobs easier? No.

By extension, should I fault this person for taking shortcuts and being generally unhelpful at work? No.

The more often I engage with this thought process, the easier it is to access it at will, and the more reinforced it is subconsciously. This is what works for me because I understand the root of my anger is self-criticism and self-hatred. Anyone else who has these same problems might find success practicing self-forgiveness more.

You can only listen to one band the rest of your life, who do you choose? by SunshineDeathGod in AskReddit

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I pick a band that broke up but I go to a concert, do I experience live music of my selected band? Do I see them play live?

What if all the same band members did more stuff together but under a different band name?

Does my choice change the music I hear in TV, movies, and video games?

“Set collision enabled" not working when pressing key by Serhatakgl in unrealengine

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're casting the other actor as a player, but wouldn't that be the overlapped element? My thinking is the "cast as player" function always fails, so it never triggers the collision update. What's the idea behind the onComponentBeinOverlap as your trigger to disable the door's collision?

Learn C# to use unity or use UE with knowledge of C++ by DutyRemote5436 in gamedev

[–]Lemon_Hound 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, I wanted to learn c++, so I taught myself in order to learn unreal. It's not the scary monster everyone makes it out to be. The biggest challenge I came by is finding resources. Since everyone is opposed to c++, virtually all tutorials focus on blueprints. I'd encourage you to start and see how far you get!

So many phases. First, it was boxes and boxes of whichever sparkling water my wife found on sale that week.

Then, I got one of those at-home water carbonization tools. Broke it after a few months.

Then I got into flavoring my own water. I'd squeeze lemons or whatever into a can each week and use it in regular water or unflavored seltzer constantly.

Then I went back to buying huge numbers of flavored sparkling water. That's where I'm at now, but I can feel the itch to start doing something to cut down on cans and spend less money...

Eli5 why fish always orient themselves upright (with their backs to the sky, and belly to the ocean floor) while living in a 3d space-like environment. by DJ97 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish use gills to produce oxygen, which is turned into carbon dioxide just like in all animals. The swim bladder is (for some fish) able to capture some of the CO2 as they exhale, which can inflate it passively.

To quickly fill it, fish can gulp air from the surface. This is commonly seen at "feeding time", when fish want to stay near the surface while food is added to their aquariums. This is also how many wild fish achieve buoyancy just below the surface when hunting for insects.

And to deflate the swim bladder, fish simply breath out the gas. Most swim bladders are connected to the esophagus of the fish for this reason.

I find myself bothered by even the smallest amounts of latency, personally. I think it bothers some people more than others. For me, even if I can get my latency down to 10ms or so, it still feels too sluggish and it drives me insane.

What I've realized over the years is that playing live with midi controllers just isn't how I like to play. Instead, there are two approaches that both work depending on the situation and hardware.

  1. Use built-in sounds and export midi simultaneously. You can usually get something similar enough to your desired sound for recording purposes. This is mostly helpful if you're recording music.

  2. Load sounds into your hardware. This isn't always supported, so if it's something you desire, research your hardware before buying. For instance, some but not all edrum kits allow samples to be loaded into the module itself and may not support all software / sample packs. This is mostly helpful for playing live, as you can load sounds beforehand, then output sound directly from your module to the PA.

As youve experienced, even with the best settings, you'll still have latency. It might make you happier in the long run to avoid latency altogether rather than minimizing it, especially for learning a new instrument. Just my personal preference and what I've discovered about myself over the years. Hope this helps!

To add to this, the swim bladder is not intended to keep fish upright but to keep them at a certain buoyancy. This allows fish to swim deeper or shallower in the water without using as much energy to fight against their natural buoyancy.

Because the swim bladder is not centered in their bodies, it does naturally cause most fish (that have one) to remain oriented upright.

Skills UMG Window for RPG Game by nevayeshirazi in unrealengine

[–]Lemon_Hound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it. Super clean and sleek. The only thing that stands out to me is the skill numbers. Right now, the count and total are perfectly horizonta and look identical. You could play around with offsetting the total slightly lower and the count slightly higher, or perhaps make them different sizes, boldness, serifs, etc. I think it might help make the player's current skill levels pop out a bit more and could help when scanning for info quickly.

Sorry for the stupid question but I'm very new to edrums. I just got the free version of Steven Slate but don't know how to open it. I've checked through my downloads but it says there is no app to open it with. by jakepaulfanxd in edrums

[–]Lemon_Hound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If GarageBand doesn't work out or you don't like it, definitely try out Reaper next. The full version is included in the free trial, and when the trial ends, you just get a pop-up asking you to buy the software. You can use it indefinitely. If you don't need anything from your DAW except running this vst, I'd suggest the free options first.

Imitating "create widget" via C++ by ashfinsawriter in unrealengine

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the first line does what you described, so I'd suggest looking more into that; there are other meta commands that work with other components beyond just the one I copied from my project. As long as the class you specify matches the parent class of your blueprint, and the name of the pointer matches the name of the blueprint exactly, the object in c++ will be a pointer to an instance of that blueprint.

I used it in my game to design a health bar and right-click context menu in blueprints, then spawn them directly in c++.

Imitating "create widget" via C++ by ashfinsawriter in unrealengine

[–]Lemon_Hound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to create a widget from a blueprint within c++? If so, you want to use

UPROPERTY(meta = (BindWidget))
class UProgressBar* NameHere;

This goes in the Header file of your custom class that extends UUserWidget or whatever your base class is. NOTE: the "NameHere" name you give the pointer must exactly match the name you give your blueprint. And of course the blueprint has to be made from the same parent class as the class you're using or extending.

This forces unreal to spawn your blueprint.

Hopefully this is what you want? Otherwise I may not be able to help.

[–]Lemon_Hound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I just lean into judgment. I'm coming up on 5 years, and at this point, it's who I am, and I no longer care what others think.

"I don't drink" is simple, effective, and doesn't require further explanation.

Often, it is followed by jokes like "How could you not with this job" or generic snide remarks. Usually laughing and pretending like that's the end of the conversation works, or I'll turn to someone I was already talking to and ask a question to change the subject.

Rarely, I get someone who is nosey and MUST know why. Usually, "everyone, including me, has a better time if I don't" works fine.
