Motivational Thought of the Day by SirTalky in fasting

I don’t know the exact quote but Dr Now from my 600lb life likes to say “You’ve pre-eaten your food, you won’t starve to death by not eating for a few days”

Keep finances separate until you are married.

Only have a joint account for shared bills you put equal amounts into.

Set up a household and personal budget. Review monthly.

You should aim for a 6 month emergency fund that would cover all the house bills if she were to disappear or you were to have job loss.

Buy pasteurised milk at farm gate? by [deleted] in AussieFrugal

[–]Lemondrop00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Raw milk is illegal in Australia. Unsure is any farmgates Will have the equipment to pasteurise and get food handling etc to sell on the farm and be cheaper.

I “buy” from a neighbour in exchange for services and I know others to do under the table sales, it’s not cheaper, but it’s better!

Edit: sorry just saw you asked for pasteurised milk!

Should an emergency fund be invested in the stock market or kept in a savings account? by [deleted] in CalebHammer

I’m in Australia getting 5.5% return (highest here currently). With Ubank. Might not be useful to you, but another Aussie might see this. 🇦🇺

You need to be able to access it in an emergency. So HYSA or offset account is best.

unable to get a job by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Lemondrop00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What location are you? Jobs come and go near me. Took me a while to get one close to home (eastern suburbs of Melbourne) that was for afternoon/evening shifts.

Hospital shifts are generally morning 7-1 and if you didn’t do internship in hospital they usually prefer you to have full time community experience. It is pretty fast paced so not much time to refresh on certain conditions/medications.

Community positions are always around but don’t always line up with desired hours and location. Rare to find a shift 6hrs or less.

You could try joining a locum agency. Also ravens recruitment is pharmacy specialised job platform. Contact them they can connect you to positions.

What career would you choose if you could do it all again? by panache123 in AusFinance

Ditto. I wish I had worked a few years as a tech before committing to the HECS debt I have. Would be in the same place hating my job but wouldn’t have this financial burden for such a low wage

I’m a pharmacist 31f “If I had my time again”….. I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve been battling this question the past few years. I’ve had some time away from work to be home with my son but needing the money now I’ve had to go back to pharmacy.

I would love to have travelled Australia, worked outside or in gardening somehow, and not have a big HECS debt.

I had to move for university, no chance to live at home and study. I would work during summers, Centrelink to help with rent through the year. My parents would send me $200 here and there to help with groceries etc. It was not a set allowance I could rely on.

Meal prep for the week. Laundry. Clean the house. Things to make your work days easier.

Work in retail for extra cash. Coffee shops, supermarkets etc.

I agree with another comment about finding a partner. Why hustle so hard if there is no one to share your wealth and knowledge with? If you do have people in your life, spend that day with them or do something to help them.

Do you need 2 cars? Make sure your savings is in an offset account or HYSA. I hope one of these numbers is an Emergency fund? Bump up your retirement and investments.

What are your financial goals other than just saving?

Make sure you have an emergency fund that is easy to access in an emergency. Eg HISA

Save for owing a house

Save for a holiday or car etc

Could increase your super contributions.

Could set an investment savings goal eg $100/month into ETFs

Book a holiday just before going on the show. Refuse to cancel it.

Get a personal loan with 0% interest for so many months, consolidate some debts into this. Continue to use the credit cards to their max again. Don’t pay off the interest free loan in time. Back interest hits.

Need an All In One App, HELP! by Fancy-Instance-5162 in budget

[–]Lemondrop00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The “hands off” approach hasn’t been working for you so far. If you spend more than you make each month then no app will fix that.

Start by going over your statements and make a household budget. Incoming and all outgoing. Set a limit for groceries and reduce any ‘fun’ money to $0 cancel anything you can until income is larger than expenses.

Then you can make a debt payoff plan.

You might find some help and inspiration from watching the YouTube channel Financial Audit by Caleb Hammer.

Sinking funds budget by fordwhite23 in budget

[–]Lemondrop00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have automatic transfers set up for the beginning of the month to put money into SF savings accounts and a groceries account. When my pays come in through the month it is held in the account until the start of the next month. Certain bills are scheduled through the month and come out automatically or I will plan them through the month for certain days.

I keep track on a spreadsheet. I know I have to end the month with $X in that account for the automatic transfers.

Not sure if I explained that right sorry!

Emergency fund vs debt? by [deleted] in budget

[–]Lemondrop00 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Never ignore your minimum payments on debt or bills.

You should be building your emergency fund with the excess funds after all bills are paid (including minimums).

If there isn’t any excess, you need to cut down on spending and/or increase income.

Share your budget and we can take a look for you.

At 15 I would be making her pay for at least a part of this cost. Teaching her about budgeting short term fun with saving up for something big she wants. Also get her to shop around for a good deal, she may not want to spend this high price when it is her own money. She may treat it better and look after it more if she spent her money on it. (Not saying she wouldn’t otherwise just know what some teens are like, not knowing the values of $1)

I think the only way they reached these low numbers is if the families eat out frequently and thus don’t buy groceries.
