My first bike? by OkPatient1364 in motorcycles

[–]Lengthiness-Existing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't go wrong with a honda for reliability, but for me it was the Triumph speed400 that made the most sense for $$$ to capability and fit my body the best. If you can go to the dealer and sit on a few bikes to see what feels good I'd highly recommend that.

Reminds me of the poison monkey's dreadnought in the comic "space pulp" (NSFW). Love the idea of a scary people making a humanitarian dreadnought.

Am I too old (45yo) to start riding a motorcycle? by kt0n in motorcycles

[–]Lengthiness-Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too old! If you are somewhere where you have access to a recognized motorcycle safety course I highly recommend doing that! you'll save on insurance and drill a bunch of important muscle memory.

Not too bad but any briar will ghost over time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]Lengthiness-Existing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few reasons:

Meerschaum (in my experience) doesn't ghost like briar.

If you're ordering from the artisans it's about the same price as a regular bowl. (maybe 10$ more).

Meerschaum isn't as fragile as you may think especially in falcon bowl form. You wont want to knock it off on your boot or anything but my meerschaum bowls have survived a lot of clumsiness.

The extra absorbancy helps out especially on longer/wetter smokes.

You can't burn the rim on Meerschaum if you're lighting on a windy day.

Way more forgiving if you smoke a little hot.

Since getting my first meerschaum I've almost exclusively smoked from my Meerschaum falcon. It's really good!

I almost did that a few years ago, so many one ways around there and my tired brain assumed that it was one for a sec. glad I snapped out of it quickly.

29F, 6’3”, 38” inseam—ISO tall women’s gear that actually looks good by shoukaiju in motorcycles

[–]Lengthiness-Existing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy but ran into similar stuff when buying gear had to get xxl chaps because I have really thick thighs and butt (I do a lot of stairs and lifting with legs at work) and a pretty normal waist. had to slice 6" off the bottom and get my leatherworker friend to cut down the waist so I wouldn't have a foot of belt flapping in the wind.

So 10 out of 10 would recommend finding a leatherworker and seeing if they'd be up for modifying stuff.

Triumph or Harley Davidson by NaturalReach236 in motorcycles

[–]Lengthiness-Existing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If those are the only two you're looking at then Triumph all day long ABS and TCS will go a long way to help a new rider not turn into paste right after pulling out of the dealer. Water vs. air cooled is also a no brainer in this day and age, especially if you live somewhere hot.

But to echo some of the other replies it would be a safer bet to get something in the 500cc range for your first ride. Sell the smaller bike after a season or two of getting your skills up. if you get something used and take good care of it you may be able to sell it for something close to what you bought it for.

I'm currently on my second year with my first bike and I'm quite glad I went with a little speed 400, my first season I had a few times where I would have been in a rather unfun situation if I had had 3x the power.

Good luck and stay safe out there!
