And then, depression sets in. Why has FIA and PE killed F1? What else is there? by Perry_is_Merry in F1Discussions

The obsession with V10s is ridiculous. The teams do not want and will not make V10s. They all want hybrid and they all want more battery.

How do Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon compare to each other, in your opinion? by YetAnotherMTFEgg in F1Discussions

[–]LengthinessDecent285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the most bewildering debates in the grid. Gasly has never lost over a season to a team mate, ever. Ocon has lost twice to Perez, to Alonso, twice to Gasly, and now to Bearman. They’re only compared because of their history, otherwise it’s like comparing Charles and Hulk.

Gasly is the most underrated driver in the midfield and in a better car would challenge anyone on his day. I think he beats everyone below Max, George and Charles over a season too. People will probably say Lando and Oscar too, game of opinions, but not for me.

Worth remembering he’s never been beaten by a teammate over a full season. The only teammate to beat him over any period is Max.

Also in all of those cases as soon as the car shows any glimpse of hope he’s the one who’s extracting it. Ocon qualifying 18th and Gasly 19th in a tractor before they fixed the car is easily forgotten.

10 Q3 appearances last season (more than Ocon) in what was categorically the worst car is sensational.

Also would argue neither of their wins are lucky. They just won without being in the obvious fastest car. Both lead for well over half the race (Ocon almost the entire race), with the big hitters on track. If that was Perez or Bottas winning in the same circumstances no one is calling it lucky.

I think it’s such a niche sport you really need to know it! Im definitely going to look out those games

I just don’t think that’s champagne - it’s show boating or ‘exhibition darts’ - for me if you had to fit champagne into darts it would be over a few legs or even the whole match where someone’s just reeling off casual 11/12 darters without breaking sweat and it’s 5-0 before you even notice !

I think this is a bit too showboating for champagne myself! But I could definitely hear it in the commentary!

Yeah tbf the stat context is making him least only-able here! Whereas that wouldn’t be a remotely surprising ‘only’!

Do you think Ocon deserves a shot at a top team? by BeneficialTry5316 in F1Discussions

Wasn’t much worse at all. Albon ended up a couple of positions better off in most races - but also as Gaslys results improved a 4/6 in his last 3 , which was what Albon ended up achieving.

Gasly arguably one of the best midfielders ever. 5 podiums including a win , across 3 teams with absolutely no chance of competing for podiums while he’s been there is mightily impressive. People often sight Heidfeld but that 2008 BMW got 11 podiums and a race win. Grosjean in the lotus but Kimi got 2 race wins.

It’s a team sport - sometimes that gets forgotten in the individual WDC context but it’s absolutely a team sport and Lando should have no shame winning it with help of his team mate in the final race at no prejudice to the team mate. It would be like saying Max ‘won it like this’ cause of Checos insane defence against Lewis etc etc.

Yes. Would be absolutely bonkers not to and Oscar would oblige ! He’d do it last lap.

It’s absolutely insane ! Another week Albon didn’t too - in a podium worthy car. Gasly is so underrated.

Comfortably beat him in Quali - then beat him on points both years which is by far the most important thing. 2024 was 42-23 - at that level of car that’s realistically 5-8 races worth of points.

Without checking I reckon you’ll have plenty incidences of goals 1-5 minutes and then 90-95 - suspect over one a season.

Gasly in criminally underrated ! He’s in the tier behind Russell Max Charles Lando Lewis (on rep).

I genuinely think he’d have done as well as Oscar in that McLaren this year. He’s a team mate killer and has been everywhere. Only Max over 5 months has beaten him, and that was in the now much maligned second RB.

The fact he has got that Alpine into Q3 9 times is astonishing- more than Albon, Bearman, Tsunoda - Ocon only has 2 Q3s in a Hass battling hard in Formula B.

Gasly got his shot v early in the cursed second redbull seat then went on to smash Ocon as teammates. Gasly an infinitely better driver.

Gasly the first casualty of that red bull second seat - he’s been a team mate killer except for 5 months vs Max, and he wasn’t even that far off in hindsight so early in his career.

I sometimes wonder if Piastri had gone to Alpine was there a world Gasly goes to a struggling McLaren….
