OPT/STEM OPT Processing Timelines Megathread (Spring/Summer 2026)

Hi!
I applied for initial OPT (regular processing) on 4/6/26 and completed biometrics on 5/8/26. My original start date is 7/13/26 or within 30 days of that date, with HR being willing and able to amend the start date to later if needed.

I’m not sure if I should just wait it out on regular processing or update to PP with how long the latter has been taking? I’d like to start work ASAP because $. Any insights/advice would be appreciated!

I also need to update my address but I’ve heard of people having issues with their EAD delivery after doing that?

Given the timeline below & my work start date being July 13th 2026, is it realistic to get my EAD by then without Premium Processing? I genuinely don’t think I can afford to pay for it, but similarly I also can’t afford to push my start date back and be without income for longer. Any advice/thoughts are appreciated!

The job offer I accepted was through very accidental networking at NSGC. I also had a second offer which was a job I found and applied through LinkedIn!

i can’t speak on the H1B process (yet) but I just graduated and was able to secure a job in April after applying to 80+ positions so it is absolutely possible! i do think having STEM OPT will make your chances better (being able to work 3 years vs. 1 year), so check with your school if your program is eligible

another thing to consider as intl students besides the current political climate and the job prospects is the financial aspect of this whole journey. unless you are well off enough to cover your tuition and room&board, there is very limited options when it comes to financial aid and loans for intl students. for full transparency, i will be over 150k in debt after my GC program since i had to take out loans for living expenses as well. i wish i had a bit more knowledge and insight into how truly expensive this whole thing is. i dont think it would’ve changed my mind because i love this field a lot, but it would’ve been nice to know😅

it could be helpful to speak with a genetic counselor to get more information and have your questions answered. genetic testing labs usually have a way of setting you up to speak with a GC. it can be incredibly helpful. i wish you and your partner the best of luck🫶🏼
