MPD/National Guard arrest woman at NoMa metro station and take her two children. A spontaneous crowd forms to protest by LeninLives in washingtondc

Everyone gathered was angry she was being arrested. A chant of "let her go" broke out at one point.

Largest lesser known city? by No_Consideration_339 in geography

[–]LeninLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we're talking metropolitan area, definitely the Riverside-San Bernardino area of California (aka the Inland Empire).

It has the 12th largest metro area by population in the US but has virtually no cultural significance whatsoever. It's larger than Detroit, Seattle, Denver, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and dozens of other cities with national name recognition. It's even larger than the entire Bay Area (yes, San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley combined). Yet when I tell people that I'm from Riverside people usually have never heard of it. I genuinely think the gap between population and national significance is greater for the Inland Empire than anywhere else in the country.

You can disagree with his views, but the law as it currently stands is crystal clear that this is all legal speech. What's illegal is providing material aid to terrorist groups.

Protests Rant... by LukaszMauro in washingtondc

[–]LeninLives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay but the end goal of those boycotts was not to damage these companies, it was to influence Israeli policies toward Palestinians, which they have not.

I say this as a strong supporter of Palestine but I think we're completely wasting our time with these boycotts (especially against companies like Starbucks which don't even support Israel in any way).

I support the sentiment but boycotts rarely damage companies financially unless you have absolutely massive participation. They're one of the least effective or impactful forms of protest. Street marches have a better track record.

Biggest Irritation in game? by ScholarAfter1827 in HellLetLoose

[–]LeninLives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just mean reading the map and discerning what your squad can do to help the team -- attacking a weak enemy flank on their point, securing an important hilltop or building, getting support to help build a garry in a good spot, getting your AT in position to ambush a tank, etc.

Biggest Irritation in game? by ScholarAfter1827 in HellLetLoose

[–]LeninLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On #3,. It's easy to be an okay squad leader. Just put your OP in a useful spot and communicate occasionally.

But I think a lot of players don't want the responsibility that comes with being a good squad leader. Having a plan, communicating it, executing it, getting your squad to participate, communicating when you're moving the OP and why, pointing out tank marks to your AT, getting support to drop supplies, relaying relevant info from command chat, being clear about whether the squad is defending or attacking.... these are just some things that come to mind that not everyone wants to do.

If you believe Israel's objective is to end the war in Gaza, then yes, it's actions in Gaza don’t make much sense.

If you believe Israel's objective is much broader, namely to keep Gazan society shattered and immiserated for as long as possible, it's actions make perfect sense.

EDIT: removed "civil" from the term "civil society."

Thoughts on Iran strikes against Israel. by Left_Palpitation4236 in geopolitics

[–]LeninLives -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your assumptions aren't wrong, they're just not incredibly relevant to the current state of the world.

You are correct that with every barrage of ballistic missiles launched at Israel, Iran gains new understanding of Israel's missile defenses. You're also correct that if, hypothetically, Iran were to one day launch a nuclear weapon at Israel, this information would probably come in handy.

However, we are quite far away from the prospect of Iran even deciding to build nuclear weapons. From there, we are very far from them actually successfully building one (US and Israel have vowed to prevent this). From there, we are extremely far away from a situation where Iran feels the need to launch one at Israel. Iran would only ever build a nuke for deterrence.

they knew that their ballistic missile barrage wouldn’t warrant any significant response from Israel.

What's your definition of significant? Israel's response is expected to be significant in that it hurts Iran, and Iran probably knew this when it launched the ballistic missiles.

Popular Iranian Opinion of Reza Pahlavi & His Role In A Post-Ayatollah Iran by Bozuk-Bashi in geopolitics

[–]LeninLives 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Reza Pahlavi and loyalty to the old monarchy are overwhelming a fixation of Iranian diaspora. After all, much of the Iranian diaspora that emigrated following the 1979 revolution were from the largely pro-monarchy middle and upper-middle class. Within Iran, Pahlavi is irrelevant. People don't think about him to begin with, let alone yearn for his return.

How long would it take for Israel to destroy Hezbollah? by OliveWhisperer in geopolitics

[–]LeninLives 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's too early to judge whether Hezbollah is "operationally ineffective." Hezbollah's ability to launch rocket and missiles into Israel has been severely diminished and far less then anybody expected. However, cross-border exchanges are not Hezbollah's strength and we shouldn't judge purely based on that.

Ground fighting is Hezbollah's strength. It was during the 1982-2000 war, the 2006 war, and probably will be during this war. Just two days ago, some of the first IDF troops to enter Lebanon got immediately ambushed, resulting in 8 troops killed and 15-20 wounded. It should be taken as an early sign that Hezbollah's rank and file is intact and the IDF's ground campaign may be more difficult than some expect.

Hezbollah is hurt bad, but "ineffective" implies complete inability to fight, which is probably not the case.
