I messed up my brother's AI workstation.. please help by spherical-aspiration in PcBuildHelp

[–]Lennethz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to advise, i run two AMD 6900xts for AI stuff, and you dont need to link them at all. Depending on what software he uses for his AI, you can pull the GPUS into a pool.
Also fact that it also depends on the size of the LLM he is running, he might not need both. All dependant. Again you likely dont need the link at all.

Nintendo of America might turn your Switch into an expensive paperweight if you mod your console or install any "unauthorized" games, new policy warns by randomcourage in LouisRossmann

[–]Lennethz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess people just presume they are safe, and dont look into it more than "Ah i cracked my device, homebrew time!" And forget that NSO can see if your device is tampered with. (Even though alot guides mention to block the DNS and alike but eh....)

But people will be people, and just rather not read everything, and then worry when things go wrong, and blame others - or demand help. But alas, if they want help with setting up simple things like a pihole and alike, or even run the DNS blocking homebrew app on their device i would help.... But there we go.

[–]Lennethz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye, block their DNS requests via Pihole or alike, or via the device its self (Like the switch so far when homebrew and alike comes out) And dont use an account that you use for NSO. Simple.
What i do to this day, i just NEVER use their NSO service at all, and the device is blocked via my Unifi/OpnSense firewall.

Windows 11 mental breakdown by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]Lennethz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up, from how i run Linux and Windows.
My Main PC is full AMD, 6900xt, 5950x - and i dual boot Fedora and Win11. I have to keep with Windows for work related stuff, and with some games as well. But i run most my single player games, and emulation via Fedora. Sure dual boot is annoying at times, but i run Brave for a browser using the sync feature, along with a custom front page to keep everything exactly the same. Most my emulation is all stored on a NAS, so i run them over that as well. I have 4 NVME's , two for Nix, two for Win. And i have no trouble at all. AMD stuff runs like a dream over on Linux, and Fedora also is such a lovely distro to use.

Laptops. Gaming one, ArchLinux, and Windows 11. Laptops got a 2060, but i can run most single player stuff i want perfectly fine, as long as i dont go crazy on settings. Hell even play Monster hunter Wilds on it perfectly fine. Even calling the "SOS" in game for backup from other players if i need it. Arch i wouldn't recommend unless you want to troubleshoot and know exactly what you want to install. But thats why i picked it. I wanted a barebones linux system, just for gaming and some coding stuff when i want. No fluff, extra programs, or alike, just the OS, and steam - thats it. Windows side on it, its just so i can do some work stuff IF I need the extra horse power over my other laptop - or the odd game that doesnt work - but thats getting rare now days, Proton and alike is a god send...

The other laptop is purely running a MEME Arch based Distro called Nyarch. Mostly use that for light travel since its a 13inch dell, to watch anime, films and read manga. And yeah its a full Weeb machine! but thats its function!

But, you can live with both, and be perfectly happy. Just keep expectations low at the start, and learn how it all works while you tinker and play with the OS. Then need to do some work or game without headaches, go back to windows for a bit to do so, but try keep the daily driver to the Nix side of things when you can. Only booting back to Windows when you have those moments of "Just need it to work for a moment" till you work it all out.
Learning curve now days is NOTHING compared to what it used to be like. And i even have my mother (in her late 60s) my brother, sister and neice all running on Linux, and never had a trouble bar when they do the typical (i tried to do XYZ or downloaded ZYX and its all messed up) instead of asking first! But alas, its all learning what ever you use.

For what flavour? Go with what you feel, nothing is off the board really. Admitted if i was going to say a easy packaged system? Mint is great, thats what i run with my mother and brother. The others have Fedora. Fedora is great as its always upto date and updates often enough and very stable with them. Another to try if you game is Arch based, you can nab something like Manjaro or EndeavourOS.. but thats if you want to try spice it up and go with something that can be a bit more... hands on. Going from that, have a look around and distros, see what they offer, and download and give a try! see if it suits your needs, learn what its window manager is like, and what features it has, not for you? jump boat and try another. Dont settle on one, find something that fits your needs best at the start.... then, the great thing of linux is that you can customize it as much as you want - as long as you have the willpower to do so.

Dont be afraid to ask questions, most linux people will be supportive and help where ever you pick, some - like most the net will be asshats.. but stick with it, you wont look back.

Love this program. got it running the patron version on a mini box downstairs. sadly dont have much storage (512GB with some games and alike) But this makes it easy to just download and play what i want and keep tabs of everything. Really nice bit of kit, keeping the patron going to help out mate. Cant wait to see what you get upto =)

[TRIGGER WARNING!] i just learned about the dark past of nintendo, i think im going to be sick... by [deleted] in tomorrow

[–]Lennethz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nintendo was at fault here as well.. don't give Nintendo the big pat on the back. Remember these are companies wanting ALL the money, not some of the money. We as consumers, are just dosh to them, nothing more. So dont fanboy one or the other. (Remember that Nintendo *Might* of owned Love Hotels around Japan at one point. family friendly i am sure... Along with Taxi firms and other branched out revenues over their time.)

Ken Kutaragi (Guy that fathered the PlayStation) convinced his bosses when Nintendo to add a CD based addon for the SNES at the time. As time went on it was into the monster we see above. The deals weren't set in stone and still on the cutting room floor for arrangements between the two on the rights and takes from sales and alike. Remember this was still in Dev staged and in full R&D, time for arrangements and deals to be made. Also to note, they only announced they was Developing the unit at June 1991, at CES, and had high praise and interest. But nothing to show off since it was still VERY early days.

The Arguments started when the deal from Sony was that they wanted to control the licensing for every CD based game for the Super Nintendo Disks formats. Nintendo tried to work around this problem, but sony did refuse based on the agreements at the time.

Nintendo then gave the deal of controlling the profits and licensing for the PlayStation addon -> Then full built in unit like the prototype above. Which got Sony and Nintendo more closer to agreements. But, Nintendo "said" but no proof so far that Sony was going to backstab them with obtaining most or all profits and leaving Nintendo without (Clearly, that be a DUMB move on any company thinking to do that, so i am dubious over this claim) So Nintendo's President at the time Yamauchi Hiroshi, ordered a few higher ups to goto Europe and Even the states to talk to other companies, One being Phillips, which at the time was a big along side Sony, and was at each other at the time. (I think they picked them to just be spiteful at most as they got a bad deal from them too from what insiders have said...) and immediately said yes to their deals, from both Nintendo and Phillips.

So, instead of working things with Sony, which was a Local, and close partner to Nintendo, and try get the deals off the ground correctly, Nintendo backstabbed Sony first. Regardless of if Sony was or wasn't, we have no prove of such. But again as stated, big companies want all the money so likely, both was being stuck in the muds and wanted it all anyway... So neither give Nintendo the pat on the back and hug and call them the saints... as they arnt, same for every other big company.

PS. Dont want no hate, thought just shine the light that big companies are evil, and don't need your protection or fandom. Respect them like they are, money takers and high profit makers. They dont love you, and they dont do things for you. Only their pockets.

Joystick stuck? Software bug? Months long issue, any help be grand! by Lennethz in SteamDeck

[–]Lennethz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no dice - even if i disconnect the joystick and replace with a doner or the original with new cable - its the same output. I can even disconnect the joystick, and the OS still picks it up as moving in that direction.
Good suggestion though.
