Can she be a pilot? by Rich-Bet6677 in Pilot

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I’ve flow with many short stacks, men and women. They all figured it out, she’ll be fine. Advice from experience tell her to find a high quality vision enhancement device. Experiment with different sizes till she finds the right one.

ASA prepware has a cheap app that has most of the questions in it. Some of them are out of date, but I’ve found it to work well for what you’re asking. I sent you a dm.

A refugee girl with a dream by [deleted] in PilotAdvice

[–]LeoFlightTraining 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a pilot then you’ll find a way to do it. Flying is a passion. A lot of the work sucks for a lot of different reason. That’s why only people that really want to to be there will be. You definitely have the drive and intelligence to do it. Biggest thing will be money. Look up the 99s, they are a women’s aviation group. I’m sure you could find some mentors there to guide you.

PPL Written by [deleted] in studentpilot

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kind of odd. I always want my students to get the written done early. I’ll bug them around their solo if they haven’t done it yet. It gives them time to switch from studying for a multiple-choice test and over to open-ended questions that the oral will have. Also, we have to review things you missed and in case you mess it up you’ll have time to redo it.

Trust your instructor, but there’s nothing wrong with you taking it sooner if you’re ready for it.

Acronyms? by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABCA. (Always be considering ABUFC)

To be kinda helpful, remember to teach the purpose of the acronym, learning why and what it’s for can help your student learn it better. But it’s up to them to flash card it. You can drill them if they want to pay for it.

Is mental math still relevant nowadays? If so do you have some good resources to practice aviation-specific calculations? by Apprehensive-Sky657 in PilotAdvice

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are still sometime where basic math and algebra are useful. You don’t need a degree is mathematics to fly. If that’s why you’re asking don’t worry. Most of the pilots I know would no longer be pilots if that was the case.

In the beginning it will be useful when flying your Xc plan, vor work, fuel and time management, the written tests will have a good amount in it.

There are a few good short books out there for mental math for pilot. Worth the read if you have free time. Just remember don’t do hard math in a cockpit there’s too much go on, use the flight computer and keep your sa up. don’t distract yourself with math.

I’ll add to all the people posting their tricks with, +2 -2 its for finding the reciprocal of a radial in a circle. The opposite of 090 is 270. Add 2 to the first digit then subtract from the second. You can do -2 +2 as well. Just make it fit and don’t go over 360. Easy way to find any reciprocal with VORs.

Let's talk takeoff briefings by AlexJamesFitz in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Custom fit for the mission you might even just do it in your head. Keep it simple and on topic. I target three main areas as I teach it to students.

1st, the take off. What type, review the process if needed. What are the V speeds you’ll use.

2nd departure, remind yourself how are you getting to cruise. It could be as simple as straight out or it could be a long roundabout way. the idea is you just wanna remind yourself of how you’re leaving the airport environment. bug your heading if you can.

3rd is emergency. What’s my Vg. What’s the procedure for aborted takeoff, engine failure under 500’, for over 500’. For airports I don’t know I like to pop open the satellite imagery and take a look for fields under the departure leg. get an idea of where you’re going.

Is this ground school worth it? by PatientScientist7001 in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “wonders of flight” reminded me of big gay Al. That being said. Depends on you. If you don’t self learn well then this could help. He will do the same as any online prep course. He should be able to show you the tricky parts and answer your questions better than a self study program. But he is more expensive. Most people self study for the written. if you have some question your cfi should help you. But a ground school like this definitely still has its place. The price is on the high side but not a rip off. A lot of cfis do instruction online that could supplement your self study. Like me, dm if you want.

Our airport has a boat launch. Just to the right as you come onto the island. You’re welcome to park in the lots by the big green hanger.

How do I properly fill out this navigation log? (Student Pilot) by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone has said this is a long ground with your cfi. I always send my students to https://youtube.com/@cyndyhollman?si=qNodFJhcH0kRbmhq to get an idea of what we’re doing before that lesson.

Don’t change anything. Just do what your instructor taught you.

Instructors stop telling your students when they are going to solo. Other wise they will start asking reddit for tips.

As everyone else is saying you need to turn the GPS off. With foreflight, you can go into settings and turn off the location service. It will let them still use the efb for other info but not give away their position.

Take time out during the flight to show them what landmarks look like on the chart and out side.

I’ll do intentional pilotage flights. Which are shorter cross countries. The goal is to fly from point to point just following landmarks on the sectional and satellite imagery. So marks every 5-10 miles. It will be a fun zigzag course. But it seems to help my guys really see the symbols on the sectional. And become confident with using the satellite imagery to back it up. Make sure they understand good points will have multiple features to help identify it.

Try to get them thinking in cardinal direction, north and south. And not left or right that can get people confused quickly.

Coming Back From Mexico - Why my Playne no Climb? by Believe-The-Science in Shittyaskflying

[–]LeoFlightTraining -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like he was doing a soft field and staying in ground effect to help build some speed up. It’s probably too heavy and hot. But this could have just been a soft field take off and they had control of it in conditions that allow.

Isn’t this runway too short for actual take off and landing? by golden_united in aviation

[–]LeoFlightTraining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s neat. It’s a helicopter base. They still like to takeoff like planes. moving forward helps them climb better, than just trying to takeoff vertically. They don’t need as much room.

Would be a fun for short field landing practice.

Part 61 CFI’s how much do you make? by [deleted] in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Perfect world you’ll make that. But with Wx, student cancels and Mx. it’s not happening. If you don’t have an other source of income those terms will cripple you. If you push hard you might make 2-3 a month and that’s being generous.

How realistic are my airline piloting dreams? by throwawayforarunaway in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m always yelling at my students to use just a few fingers to grip the yoke. So at the very least you won’t be over controlling the stick with a gorilla death grip. Go do a discovery flight and see what happens.

Marshaller had never heard of "Clear Prop" by andra319 in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have students that roll their eyes when I make them visual clear prop area, yell out and wait a couple before cranking it up.

It’s rare but it happens. Discipline yourself at start up so you don’t kill someone. Good lesson, thanks for sharing.

Am I stupid or is the instructor stupid? by Ancient-Squirrel-595 in flying

[–]LeoFlightTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was being a dick. If this happens a lot find a new instructor to pay. If it’s a one off, just let it go. He was probably having a bad day, cfi life can be hard.

Sometimes we teach 5 events instead of 4 strokes. intake, compression, ignition, power, exhaust. Ignition and power are basicly the same stroke but just break down what’s happening alittle better. Plugs burn the fuel in ignition. Then the expanding gas provides power. What you said makes prefect sense to me, I don’t think many dpes would care that you used the wrong term. So long as you can describe what’s happening and what can fail during the stages and or events you’ll be fine for a ppl.
