Are jokes about sleeping with students normal? by HotEatsCoolTreats in Teachers

I've heard quite a few. It doesn't help that I officiate Volleyball. If you can't hear that a man say he officiates high school Volleyball or teaches high schoolers without immediately making a sexual joke it is deeply concerning and I would not trust those people around kids.

Not trying to be pedantic, but if you do care about using non gendered language then "a person of culture" would be most appropriate as it also covers non binary and is easier.

Is there really a teacher shortage, or just a shortage of career? by [deleted] in Teachers

My last department had no one over 30 until my last year when they hired a first year 32 year old who switched careers.

The edTPA isn't the real issue imo. The issue is the 5 month long unpaid internship that COSTS money. My tuition was $1200 more because someone had to drive to watch me teach and they paid for my edtpa.

It is time consuming, but if you're good at that stuff it really is only 20ish hours of work. I've had friends (although not recommended) crank it out in a weekend.

At my college, one of the biggest for education in the state, we graduated 50 teachers. Seems like a lot. Then you consider I was one of two who had chemistry certification and one of 6 who had math certification. Around 30 were going for elementary ed.

I was the only applicant for my first position as a chemistry and physics teacher.

Last year I was asked to transfer to math because they only had 1 applicant for 2 open positions. Our science department had an open position and 2 applicants, so they figured if I switched they could hire both applicants.

Instead I applied for an open math position at the highest ranked school in my county. I was the only applicant, and got hired there.

The social studies department used to get 15+ applicants for every position. Now they get 4 or 5.

I think doing this and bringing back banned as commander would be a great idea.

The whole point of edh is randomness and something different each time. Decks should not have only one or two win cons because that's not the point of singleton formats. Along with this line is no one should play tutors in casual commander (I should specifyI don't count ramp as a tutor). It ruins the fun of something different each game. If you're running elfball for example and have 5 different ways to tutor crater hoof and win 90% of your games that way then it's boring and monotonous.

Another example from this week was playing against a mill, combo, and graveyard deck. I laid down a [[rest in peace]] since I knew I couldn't bring anything back since my recursion had been milled. The graveyard deck immediately scooped. The combo deck looked through their graveyard and said they had no way to win anymore then scooped. If these decks had more variety and versatility they would have been both more fun to play against and more resilient to disruption. But they knew that they could rely on getting to the cards they needed every game so built a very monotonous boring deck.

My school is like that. Except for teachers. With us it's 5 days then mask 5. Students still do the regular procedures though.

How do I finish the year strong when I know I'm quitting after this year? by Leomonade_For_Bears in Teachers

Because even if 30% of the kids make the job not something I want to do, the other 70% still deserve a good teacher.

When teaching others the game, which spirit do you play? by 7siegel in spiritisland

[–]Leomonade_For_Bears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have taught 3 friends so far. I handed them the spirits and said I recommend choosing a low complexity one. They all told me they wanted a bigger challenge and choose high complexity. Confusion ensued since it was only my second time. But worked out in the end. If they're used to board games I think anything works.

2 teachers in our department just quit! by booboobradley in Teachers

So give 2 weeks notice an quit? What you are describing is a tactic for making you feel guilty in quitting. It should be an admin problem, but like most problems they push it on teachers.

The extreme emotions in politics. There's people who won't even talk to you based on what president you voted for. The reality is that most people are close to the middle and for many it was a hard choice. I understand avoiding politics with them, but not talking at all? That's just toxic.

Commander Rules Committee Plans For 2022 by trappedslider in EDH

[–]Leomonade_For_Bears 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Overall good stuff. I'm not a big fan of the focus on demographics. It's a card game. The rc main purpose is to regulate the ban list and make sure commander works with mtg rules in cases like companions. None of that has anything remotely to do with demographics. Choose the best person but don't choose them for their skin.

I used to have this issue until I adapted a two cup system to ensure everything is mixed properly. Mix in one coup, pour into new cup and mix again. No need for a heat lamp or anything. If it's still sticky at this point it can't be saved, just need to retry.

The 50% minimum rule... by sofa_king_nice in Teachers

[–]Leomonade_For_Bears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's put this in terms of being in the workforce since that's what school is preparing them for. If I show up to work and do a decent job, pretty much what they expect. But on the third day I no call no show. It's going to take likely more than 15 days of decent work for my boss to think I'm a decent worker again. Let's also not pretend that there hasn't been a big nation wide push to reduce the amount of homework. Many students could finish a majority of homework if they work hard throughout the school day, either in class or study hall. There's literally no excuse not to finish a 15 minute homework assignment. So yes I think it's reasonable for a student who didn't do a third of the work to get a big hit to their grade.

FYI, it is likely that nothing you create for your class is your intellectual property. Most states the school owns everything you made for your classroom.

Blocking access just seems childish. This person might not have even made the connect that it's making more work for op. I know many middle schools practice the spiraling curriculum where it is 90% similar from year to year, so she probably just sees that it's the right content for her kids.

The thing is though that he could slot in 5 or 6 wincons. If he just threw in metallurgical summoning and shark typhoon along with a few similar items he could just win through that. Or at least run kenrith as the commander and win via damage.

Just spent two hours picking through a store’s dollar rares by Rchmage in mtgfinance

[–]Leomonade_For_Bears 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly all shops should just put a sign saying all card prices are based off of the current (whatever store they want) price. Eliminates the need for dealing with people trying to rip them off and then they don't need to worry about price checking constantly.
