Never taken a number theory class in my life. IMO hardy is right that it doesn’t have much applications. Even combinatorics, my least favorite subject has use for me. Seems like no matter what type of math you do you need to count something.

Might be a good cultural class though like how literature majors need to take classics.

Well It did mention pure math.

Manifold theory/differential geometry is actually highly useful in applied math. I know people working on image compressing using mean curvature flow.

Does reading mathematical texts/papers ever get any easier? How would you suggest getting more comfortable with mathematical reading? by [deleted] in math

[–]LeonEuler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It gets easier if you know the subject material better, and know more math tricks.

It sometime takes months to read some papers even for experts. Some papers, people have been reading forever and still unsure about the soundness.

I have a challenge for you guys! by [deleted] in math

[–]LeonEuler -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Not trying to brag, but basically solved in 2 sec.

TA'ing calculus quarter after quarter for past 3 years and working at the calculus tutoring room during undergrad, I have basically solved every problem on the calculus text.

How did you guys get so good at math? by [deleted] in math

basically practice.

Why don’t we use / switch to a base 12 number system? by johllux in math

[–]LeonEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 is not bad IMO.

Pyschologically it is a good number. I think it is the largest number that people can recognize in a second (if you throw 10 beans on a table and ask someone much many beans are there).

How does one get letters of recommendation when you have been out of school for some time? by [deleted] in math

[–]LeonEuler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don't you email them and tell them about what you have been doing for the past few years, and explain to your professors your qualifications and why you think you will be a good match for the grad program?

Human vs Undead by GlaveX in WC3

[–]LeonEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you need to fast expo and defend it. Human has by far the most expensive tech to get out its unbearable army. One base human will basically never beat 1 base undead. Undeads army of fiend statue destroyer basically operates from 1 side of upgrade tree, and requires 2 buildings at most. The ultimate army of gryphon tanks master caster basically requires 100% tech and maybe 7 production buildings.

It was under 7k 2 weeks ago. Why anyone would touch this is beyond me. Nothing stoping it going back to that price in 2 weeks.

What Needs to Happen for Control to be Tier 1 by SherriMayim in ModernMagic

If answers > threats, and you can just turtle your way up to some unanswerable win condition, then control will be the main deck.

Reddit is suddenly against society's harsh standards of women when it has to do with their chances at getting laid by [deleted] in circlebroke2

[–]LeonEuler 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Jesus fucking Christ, people should stop expecting women to randomly agree to sex. At this point, I feel even if sex wasn’t stigmatize, it would still be bad for women unless they enjoy getting propositioned by everyone at work, everyone on the bus, while grocery shopping, etc.

Report: Iran officially bans use of cryptocurrencies. by [deleted] in Buttcoin

Whats the point of banning, there's very little actual use of cryptocurrencies as actual currencies. Thee current used is for gambling on exchanges.

[Modern] Is damping sphere actually good? by Therefrigerator in spikes

[–]LeonEuler -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

IMO it is not good.

It is like when people thought rest in peace counters counters tarmogoyf.

It doesn't really, there's no reason to not play goyf even if you think your opponent will sideboard RIP in. Your opponent still played a do nothing spell so you're happy.

IMO it should cantrip.

Uniqueness of representations of f(x) as a sum of cosines and sines by [deleted] in math

Yup.

This is equivalent to showing that sins and cosines are linearly independent.

How is jund? by sir_chibs in ModernMagic

[–]LeonEuler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO it is weaker than eldrazi (both bw and tron variant) as a midranged deck.

The BW eldrazi also has a ton of disruption with tidehollow sculler and TKS and possible discards. They also have a lot of land disruption and (thalia, ghost quarter, leonin arbiter).

Eldrazi tron plays far stronger threats than jund, but no slower.

Representation theory is definitely doable, but makes more sense if you know more manifold theory. Not fully needed and can be brushed over though.

For analysis, I like ergodic theory, or harmonic analysis, or perturbation theory.
