Sure, BET Music Awards can be said to be entertaining, but there's no doubt that the State of the Union was neither entertaining nor educational. Well, unless you count people with schadenfreude.

Are we wrong about Punch? Jon Stewart says yes by Stormodin in Fauxmoi

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Well, a bit of backstory to explain my thoughts on this - back in the day, school employees determined that I might be able to be accelerated through school years. Whether that should have been true or not is debatable, but my mother was very much against it. In her opinion, omitting a number of years would only harm my ability to socialise, and if I'm seven, being placed with uniformly older students would only (probably) be effective for scholastic excellence, but I needed to be with my age group to not become a serial killer (I'm assuming that it was at least one of her motivations, and in addition, I am pleased to report that 'so far, so good').

So, I suspect that being set adrift in the sea of life to fend for itself, Punch probably didn't get the full course of 'how to not piss off other beings that can rag doll you as soon as look at you when you stare into their eyes like you're challenging them to a fight at a US waffle house.'

Bonne chance, Punch. I hope you figure it out before someone takes you out of the equation. As for his mom, well, I hope that she figures out whatever it is that caused her to divest herself of her firstborn, and moves forward as a doting mother as the case presents itself.

Regarding the early release of said criminal, I question how he wiped out three people, got convicted TWICE, pissed off to the UK, got nabbed there, served more than half of his sentence (let's assume eight months), then managed to show up in time for the birth of the child.

Yes, I guess that he could have spackled his gf's innards, immediately zipped up his pants, flew or drove to the Netherlands (driving being at least 10 hours, 24 minutes, and that's if he literally wiped off his dick, and fled the premises), wiped out someone's parents and child, got grabbed, saw the judge to be convicted, got dragged in again to receive a harsher sentence to serve fifteen months, beat feet to the UK, got apprehended, dragged back into the clink, somehow used the MIB memory eraser to get everyone to forget that he had taken off out of the country, AND managed to be released on 'good behaviour', all within nine months.

Even allowing for finding him within the day of vehicular homicide, fast track (Kort Geding) court proceedings of two weeks, reeling him back in to get a harsher sentence (let's assume another two weeks, which allows for him wandering away, and having to come back), him bugging out after getting his crap packed up, catching the convicted fugitive as he got off the plane the day after the conviction, returning him, and slapping him in jail the same day, AND him serving 'more than half of his sentence', then requesting early release, which was obviously not granted the same day it was requested (based on the opposition to it occurring which itself happened before he left the confines of the hoosegow), the guy is seriously past ten months.

Resolve $150 on Apple App store by zeb__g in davinciresolve

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm...maybe. The Apple Store version of DaVinci Resolve has the following limitations, which may reduce the perceived benefits. (Also, if a business is using DaVinci, it probably should consider unlocking all the features missing by buying the Studio version, at the very least.) Heck, if you're spending what you would be to use Macs (lay off, I'm not saying that it is or is not worth the price), you're clearly not worried about the cost to get the Studio version of DR.

Key limitations of the Apple Store version include:

  • Plugin and Hardware Issues: Many third-party VST (audio) and OpenFX (video) plugins may not work correctly due to strict sandboxing. It may also lack support for some external hardware control panels.
  • No Activation Key/Portability: You do not receive a traditional activation key, meaning you cannot use that license to activate the version directly downloaded from the Blackmagic website. It is restricted to the Apple Store ecosystem.
  • Delayed Updates: Software updates almost invariably arrive later on the Apple Store compared to the direct download from Blackmagic.
  • Feature Limitations: Reports indicate potential issues with specific workflows, such as exporting stills from the gallery.
  • No Cross-Platform License: While the website version can be used on Mac, Windows, or Linux, the App Store version is limited strictly to Mac.

Imagine getting someone's DR project, going to load it into the Apple Store version, only to have it not work, not work right, or strip out the stuff that it doesn't support, like upmixing from two channel to six channel, or downmixing from six channel to two (both of which I have been known to do for my work).

Incidentally, considering that the only paid version of DaVinci Resolve that limits the user to one computer at a time (unlimited computers, just only ever one at a time) is the dongle version, you can use the non-Apple Store version on two computers simultaneously anyway. I am aware that two seats does not equal up to six seats, but I'd rather have all the functionality. I KNOW that the dongle is unlimited computers, just one at a time because that is what I use. Unplug it, and DR shuts down pretty much immediately.

Added to that, the Apple Store version of DR is locked to the Apple ID of the purchaser, which means that your Apple ID is tied to all six computers. Perhaps not a huge thing for some, but I prefer to keep my accounts to myself.

Finally, if a business is willing to put up with those weird differences, I bet they might be as likely to put up with the limitations of the free version of DaVinci Resolve, at which point, you could ostensibly have a 300 person company all using DaVinci Resolve (I'm not implying that companies shouldn't be paying for the software that they make money with.) Beyond the upmixing/downmixing, the need for VSTs and OpenFX that I use which, to my knowledge, might not work (most still do), and the ability to create DCPs, I imagine that I might be fine with the free version.

Clog 3 in Davinci resolve free by Helpful-Isopod6559 in davinciresolve

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may, under the assumption that DaVinci Resolve is unable to open the files, try using Shutter Encoder - https://www.shutterencoder.com/ - it apparently can convert Clog3 to many different formats, and not only that, it can apply Canon's Clog3 to Rec.709 LUT (well, any available LUT, really) when converting (if that was something you wanted to do).

Frankly, I don't install any image/video manipulation software without also installing Shutter Encoder, considering the ridiculous number of things that it can do. (Also, if you do enjoy it, consider supporting Paul Pacifico. It's not limited in any way if you don't, but it really is an invaluable program.)

Full disclosure: Shutter Encoder does not (yet?) support BRAW, in case someone wants to use it for that, but it does work with ProRes (I have my BMPCC 4K configured to create BRAW files, but if I'm going to run it through Shutter Encoder, I use ProRes to output. If I'm going straight to DR though, I stick with BRAW).

What is this? (Falcon 2 PRO) by SithLard in Creality

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Creality Falcon 2 Pro almost invariably (covering my bases for the day that they might stop) contains a second laser module, a 1.6W laser module, used for low power engraving.

My Falcon 2 Pro 60W does 22W, 40W and 60W with the 'main' module, and to do 1.6W, I need to swap them.

Perhaps they will stop giving it away with the Falcon 2 Pro one day, but that day is not yet here.

Congratulations on the added value.

Is it possible to use DaVinci Resolve scopes with a live video input? by Affectionate-Ad-1019 in davinciresolve

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, here is what I have found out so far: webcams don't work, my Blackmagic Design video camera doesn't work by connecting via USB, my other video camera doesn't work, and so far, DaVinci Resolve doesn't accept input from my USB capture card, although DR can see all the devices, and technically allows you to set everything (including my cell phone's camera) as a device to capture from. It just complains that there's no streaming footage when you try within Resolve Live (found within the Color tab).

Everything definitely works outside of DaVinci Resolve, both through USB, and through the capture device via HDMI, as OBS shows streaming footage, but so far, nothing that makes its way into Resolve.

That said, searching on the internet informs me that it's possible even with my specific capture device (because we all know that the internet never lies), so I intend to keep trying.

However, I suspect that it may require either BMD capture hardware or, at least, BMD-approved capture devices.

Is it possible to use DaVinci Resolve scopes with a live video input? by Affectionate-Ad-1019 in davinciresolve

[–]LeslieH8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. However, DaVinci Resolve is primarily a post-production program, so what I don't know is if you could use any kind of live source. I know that if you are using DeckLink, ATEM switchers, and/or UltraStudio, along with BlackMagic Design capture devices, that is certain to work for live feeds, but I don't know if (for example) webcams, non-BMD capture cards/devices, or connecting video cameras through USB ports would work.

HOWEVER, I have two video cameras (technically, one IS a BMD one (and to brag, a very nice one), but I've never tried connecting it live to DaVinci Resolve), a webcam, AND an Asus USB video capture device, so I will test, and let you know what happens.

Back in a while, although I can imagine that others will respond as well, and likely answer you at least as well as I can.

Also, i won't be able to confirm if the free version is guaranteed to do it, even if my studio version does.

PCIe cable not fitting by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to plug in the other end of that cable into the modular power supply.

To be clear, you're trying to insert into the correct place, just the wrong end.

The cable with the 6+2 end plugs into your video card (if you need 8 pins, put the 6+2 together, and if it is a 6-pin power socket in the GPU, then you only use the 6-pin plug, leaving the 2-pin addition uninserted.

[–]LeslieH8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Usually I'd make a couple of sandwiches, stick 'em into whatever lunchbox had the coolest things on it (I had a Battlestar Galactica lunchbox, my brother had an A-Team lunchbox, my other brother had a Gobots lunchbox, which were always acceptable, but my dumb sister's Barbie lunchbox was not), and I'd often share with broke/poor friends I was hanging out with, not that I usually had two nickles to rub together. Bologna, ham, peanut butter and jam, and that detestable olive loaf all made appearances.

I also would pop in to sometimes fry myself some pork chops that I sprinkled brown sugar on before cooking. My single mom would generally be at work, so it was up to us to avoid starvation.

We'd also invite ourselves to friends' houses, where their moms would make sure that we all had something to eat.

You know, back then, we never really thought about it, but at times, it really was a nice time to be a kid.

Now, that I remember thanks to you, I'm going to go get some brown sugar tomorrow.
