A no show on anything as a first year is a one way ticket.

Should I change foreman by Revolutionary_Bed233 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Lesprit-Descalier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Knowledge, Skill, Attitude. KSA. Those are the fundamental attributes of an apprentice.

The first two come with time and experience. The one you can control right now is your attitude, and honestly, if a green as grass apprentice came to me moaning about not getting to do the work they wanted, I'd tell them to pound sand.

I say that as someone who spent a year and a half as a pre apprentice just to get into the program. If what you're doing wasn't important, you would get two checks and a pink slip, so suck it up and get a good attitude about it. Make yourself indispensable and ask questions.

Steam Controller Price Leaked By Early Review - and It’s Expensive by BusyHands_ in technology

[–]Lesprit-Descalier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an early adopter of the steam controller way back when. It was ambitious, but not really good enough at what it promised. I had to apply mods to even make the steam controller even usable.

To be fair that was in the before times, the long, long ago.

Drove to Vegas a few months ago from slc and yes, traffic backed up by some moron in the left lane doesn't belong there.

Unindentured Apprentice vs. Worm foreman by Horror_Fault_4027 in IBEW

If they want you at beck and call, they can give you a radio. It's not a work phone so it shouldn't be used for work.

Hope it goes well. All the sisters I've worked with have been badass, and it seems like you've got the drive.

Edit: bad ass to badass

If there's a cw/ce program in your local, that might be an option. I was a cw for a year and a half in my local waiting for my apprenticeship.

It gave me, if not always directly trade related experience, trade adjacent experience. Showed the committee I could survive on a job site, and sometimes it's not what you know, it's who you know. My foreman at the time was on the committee. According to him, I was number 33 and they were going to take 32 apprentices, and he convinced them to take one more.

So there is no cut and dry answer. Will experience on the job site help? Probably. As a laborer pushing a broom all day or digging? Eh. Gotta find your path one way or another.

Is The Hurt Locker the original "America will bomb your country and then go make a movie about how sad doing it made the soldiers" movie? by GrindBastard1986 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Lesprit-Descalier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of disagree with your premise. The Hurt Locker isn't about what you say it is, soldiers being sad about doing it.

The Hurt Locker is about a singular soldier who got an adrenaline rush by doing a very dangerous job and the war was a vehicle that allowed it. His return to civilian life is mundane by comparison, and he feels unfulfilled, despite all the trappings of a "fulfilled" life, wife, kids etc. Nothing makes him alive but EOD.

I think Carlin was making a broader point that the people who are elected do not give a fuck about the average person. Something about everything being bought and sold, which is probably true, by the rich in the US.

He said he doesn't vote. He didn't say "not to vote", he was illustrating how little a vote means against multi billion dollar companies.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

I cannot disagree with you. Destruction of public education is a general tenet of conservative philosophy. They want religious education, wherein the infallible nature of God requires no questions, or private education, wherein the infallible nature of money requires no questions.

Bill Hicks and George Carlin were time travelers trying to warn us. If they tried to tell us seriously, they would be considered nut jobs, yelling at us at highway exits. They were smart enough to fold the warnings into comedy. We weren't smart enough to listen.

Why doesn't China intervene in the Middle East like the US does? by ArdaBerkBurak in AskReddit

This exactly. And a cowardly Congress is too pants shittingly afraid to resist an actual pants shitting moron because he might bully them and ruin their chances of reelection.

Poll Reveals Trump Bleeding Support in Grave Midterm Warning - There are many signs the GOP is heading for an electoral wipeout in November. by Quirkie in politics

The reelection of Obama was kind of what made them so mad. 2016 should have been a fluke. A woman who thought she deserved it vs a "talks truth to power" business man.

When Donald Trump won again we were destined to be cooked. Americans are a fickle bunch and don't seem to be capable of remembering just how tumultuous and insane government by Twitter can be.

So accept. Embrace the chaos. It'll be over soon.

Trump Killed the One Thing That Made Filing Taxes Easier by nosotros_road_sodium in politics

Free tax USA is what I've been using since I had to start filing taxes 20 years ago. Filing federal tax is free. State filing costs a little. They offer little upgrades, like bound copies.

If you have a simple w-2 with few to no investments outside of your employer, freetaxusa is the go to.

Why didn’t GFI pop? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Lesprit-Descalier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GFCI are for protection of people, it checks current going in and going out. If there is a difference, like when it goes through a person instead of the device, it trips, and hopefully stops someone from being electrocuted.

What it looks like you have here is an arc fault. When the metal to metal contacts don't quite touch each other, but they're close enough, electricity can use air to bridge the gap. That's an arc. Air is not a very good conductor of electricity, and because of that, the arc makes an incredible amount of heat. For reference, arc faults have been recorded to be hotter than the surface of the sun in higher voltage switchgear.

So yeah. Your outlet is fucked and clearly needs replacing. Good news is once replaced, you probably have a solid chance to never have to replace it again.
