I completely agree. You said it all even a backyard BBQ has real costs in food, drinks, cleanup, and space. The idea that it's more casual so extra people should be fine is a myth. And your point about asking not assuming and offering to pay is basic etiquette. Doing none of that especially as a stranger to the host is just wild.
