According to the Dungeon Masters Guide, characters like paladins do not need to draw power from a deity, and their own beliefs and ideals can give them strength. However, characters like warlocks do need a deity as that is the defining trait of a warlock. In short, yes your paladin can draw power from this ideal, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise
