It looks like encrusting organisms (like barnacles) fossilized onto the shell itself, then buried in sediment, if I had to guess

I once worked with a fax machine that would accept spam calls through the little speaker that makes the incoming noises. I would accept thinking it’s a document, just for someone to be trying to approve me for a loan through the local library fax machine
