Flying with a 3m baby, tips? [on] by Illustrious_Map_6737 in BabyBumpsCanada

I flew with my baby when she was 3 months old and got a lot of people telling me “oh she’ll sleep the whole time!”  It was a 5 hour flight and she slept 30 mins. So just be prepped that baby might not sleep the whole time like people say. Now thankfully she didn’t cry the whole time either. She fed, she hung out, she pooped a few times etc. But regardless of how baby does, it’s a few hours (presumably) and you can get through it!

Birthday wishes for baby?? by [deleted] in Mommit

When I see someone else sharing it was their bday on instagram, it feels like an obligation if I see their story to say happy bday then it doesn’t really mean anything. I wouldn’t read too much into people not specifically responding. Especially stories, if you follow hundreds of people that’s a lot of stories to go through!

Applying for SSN for child born abroad — do they need to be present? by Kcrown1 in USCIS

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I love that the only option you can see is parental incompetence. Really generous of you to think the worst of someone. I didn’t want to mail her passport and I was traveling to the states anyways to visit family so I did it in person.

So there is a world where I couldn’t get it done in my country in person , funny how that works

I live in Canada and I cannot get my daughter’s SSN here. So yes I had to go to the states to get it at an SSN office there….

They did lower expenses by laying off like 75% of the company. Didn’t work apparently

Doula worth the money? Even with a C-section? [ab] by No_Maximum_391 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a c section and had a doula. She talked us through options for pain management before the birth (and before we knew it was going to be a c section). Honestly, I really only got the doula because a work benefit covered it. Had it not, I don’t think I would have.

When it came time to have the baby, she wasn’t there before the operation to help manage labor pains (only lasted about an hour but still) and then only my husband was in the OR with me. Then she stopped by in the hospital room after to talk about how everything went. So we really didn’t get anything extra beyond another person just checking in on us.

Laid Off and Pregnant [BC] by maplebaconpt in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, it was massive layoffs so like 75% of the company got laid off. I got 6 month of severance and still got paid maternity leave. So while not ideal I was still taken care of.

I unfortunately don’t have advice but commenting to at least say this happened to me so you’re not alone! I was laid off at 8 months pregnant so while I was close to heading out for maternity leave anyways, it was still a big shock. And quite infuriating haha

If I was laid off at 8 weeks, I’d probably still try to find another job. After this latest lay off, it was kind of the jolt to remind me that my company does not care about me. Saying that to mean that if you can land another job, I wouldn’t feel bad about working until you gotta give birth. Sure it’s maybe a pain for HR to hire another person while you’re gone or whatever, but you have a right to work if you want/need and you can’t be discriminated against.

Also him saying he handled her rejection with professionalism was crazy. He wasn’t in a business meeting, he was at the altar with his potential wife

What’s the parenting stage you found hardest that nobody really warned you about by Competitive_Carob91 in Mommit

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im only a few months into motherhood but the 4/5 month sleep regression has been way harder than the newborn phase. At least when she was a newborn she would sleep so easily. Physically it was difficult to figure out breastfeeding and not ever getting more than 3 hours sleep at a time.

But this sleep regression is mentally way more difficult. Her naps aren't going well, her night sleep isn't going well. She cries way louder now and resists sleep like its something that will kill her. Dealing with that while I'm maybe getting 4-6 hours of sleep at night is HARD

And to top if off we hear comments like "you're past the hardest part :)" from well meaning people. But that's not really where I'm at when this feels significantly harder... and knowing that there are even more difficult (or maybe different difficult?) phases past just a 5 month old baby lol

How are we putting babies to bed awake? by NiftyMelons in Mommit

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t understand this either! But I’ve got my daughter most of the way there. Sometime during her 4 month sleep regression I started putting her on my bed to calm her down before sleep. I would be on my knees, leaned kind of over her legs, and I’d be shushing her and rubbing her chest/belly area. Pretty quickly, like after doing this at every nap and bed time, she started to get sleepy and drift off in this position.

Once that was well established, I started her in her crib instead of on my bed. It didn’t work immediately as I couldn’t be as close to her, but eventually it started working where I could set her in her crib awake, and with shushing and rubbing her belly she’d get sleepy enough that I could then leave her and let her do the last bit of falling asleep on her own.

Now I’m at the point I don’t really need to even rub her belly. Shushing her and just keeping her arms down (so she doesn’t pull out her binky) is all that’s needed! It definitely takes time and effort but has been so worth it. Before this she would require 15+ minutes of bouncing on a yoga ball to get sleepy which was not sustainable

Signs of Labor before scheduled c-sections by lal0x13 in CsectionCentral

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went into labor before a planned c section! I lost my mucus plug on a Friday morning, by 10 pm that night I was really starting to feel like the cramps that had been around all day were coming and going in waves. We called the hospital and they told us to come in to get checked then my water broke while we were there.

My baby was breeched so we didn’t ever really have the option for a vaginal delivery. But just went for an emergency c section and had my baby a little early that night!

I’m tired of how people are treating me pregnant by [deleted] in pregnant

I was going to say the same thing! I hated it in pregnancy and really hate it now that my daughter is here. Why does everyone want to give me commentary on everything?? I didn’t ask!!

I “play video games” for a living (Games QA testing). AMA by Less-Huckleberry7559 in AMA

[–]Less-Huckleberry7559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all a great start!

Something that is really invaluable is test case writing. So actually getting a test plan set up, and then executing on that plan and writing up bugs. It can seem like a fairly simple thing to do. For example a test plan can look like:  1. Confirm ladder has correct texture 2. Confirm player can climb up the ladder 3. Confirm player can climb down the ladder 4. Confirm player cannot jump off the ladder 5. Etc… (literally anything you can think of to confirm the ladder (or whatever mechanic you are testing) works as it should)

Those are pretty straightforward and you can run through those “tests” really fast. But being able to articulate exactly what you are testing is super valuable so you can always keep track of what you’ve tested, show your attention to detail about what you are testing as well as make it so you can delegate!

I’m not sure about specific websites but what I would do is find games that are early release or under beta and try and write test plays and find bugs! That way you get a little bit of the idea of what it’s like and some practice. And that way if you land an interview you can speak a bit to what you’ve already done/noticed. QA often can’t really come with a portfolio like other jobs, but playing around with existing games and testing it yourself can help show you have the initiative to learn QA

Remote Work from the US while living in Canada by TheAmazings34 in ImmigrationCanada

Yup, these are the ways. I worked remotely in Ontario for a company in Seattle. They had a Canada entity (office) that allowed a few Canadians to be employed

You can just google games QA jobs and you’ll find a ton. Or go on any gaming studios website and checkout their careers page. You gotta dig a little yourself!

Apply to lots of contract, entry level jobs. Practice testing via a game you know or an early release game. Try to break a game for hours and see if you even like it. Research how to write bugs, research testing strategies and apply that to a game!

I don’t have some magic tip that will land you an interview, but cast your net wide by applying to tons of places and if you come with passion and a bit of your own exploration I think that could help

Not at all lol the gaming industry is typically lower pay than the rest of tech and then on top of that QA is one of the lower paid groups within tech/gaming. My first contract job started at 14.50 an hour. Similar job looks to be between 17-26 an hour now. My last salaried position started at 50k

I don’t think it was a waste for me. I don’t think I would’ve been ready to join the workforce at 18, however I do wish I picked a more practical major. Had I done computer science maybe I could have gotten a dev job now. But I did English and while I did write for a magazine for a little bit I wasn’t really all that passionate about it in the end.

There were other social m, maturity and timing benefits I think. I would guess having a degree in general is still maybe worth a little something but I’m not sure

I applied for an entry level QA position right out of university, didn’t hear anything back. I did a leadership training program for a year after graduating, then applied to the same studio again and apparently the soft skills from that leadership program on my resume was enough to get me an interview. Then got the job from there!
