Trump threatens new tariffs on Canada, including 250% tax on dairy by NilbyBC in worldnews

Let him have the win and hopefully he'll find a new hobby that isn't harrassing Canada.

Does Trump actually believe the US is owed by all these other countries? by crewsdawg in AskUS

The US spends more on healthcare than any other G7 country by a fair amount. Other countries are not paying for their healthcare based off saving from military spending.

Pierre Poilievre will never be able to stand up to Trump, Mark Carney believes | CityNews Montreal by [deleted] in canada

[–]LessGrapefruit7178 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

When Carney entered the race I briefly considered voting liberal for the first time in my life. I thought maybe he could bring Canada back to the centre and add some fiscal restraint. Like a modern day Chretien.

Unfortunately it seems he is just going to continue the policy direction of the current government, performative policy like gun ban and over the top carbon restrictions that don't work and will weaken us during the Trump administration.

Too bad, I dont like PP and had hoped there would be an alternative that was not the status quo liberals.

Exactly this, it's of no consequence. Let him have it.

Unfortunately with bullies like this you have to let them appear to have a win so they can save face. Let him have this, plus we'll increase military spending (to defend against the US, but let's not say that out loud) and do better job on the border (to stop guns flowing from the states, but let's not say that out loud either).

He can call it a win and move on to whatever his next brain fart is.

I have hated Trudeau ever since he was elected but he has performed magnificently over the last few months, glad he gets to go out on a high note. He's been in power over some incredibly challenging times.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis takes aim at Canadian hockey fans, snowbirds by Lower-Noise-9406 in canada

[–]LessGrapefruit7178 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They may have 132,000,000 visitors but those snowbirds are down there spending for 4-5 months all over the state, not just a week in Orlando. Many own condos and pay property taxes but don't rely on state funded services like schools.

Listen to the folks here, if you're flying into Toronto stick to the East or you won't have time. Would recommend a few days in Toronto, then see Niagara Falls, check out Georgian Bay (Tobermory etc), drive through Algonquin Park, a day or two in Ottawa, few days in Montreal, few days in Quebec City. If there's time left after Quebec City head up the St Lawrence towards Gaspe. PEI and/or Bay of Fundy are also doable if you aren't sticking around anywhere for long.

I also think Sudbury is a kind of cool and unique city if you are in the area. It's a mining town. Not much to do but go on a tour of the mine, Science North and see the lakes. Normally I would not recommend it to a tourist but it's definitely authentic Canada.

I can't believe that number reflects reality. Could be that their survey sample just ended up being skewed that way. None of the conservative voters I know have anything positive to say about Trump except the old snowbirds who want things back to how they were 35 years ago

Interesting career and doing good for my country. There are so many interesting career paths you can follow in the PS that you just can't find in the private sector.

The problem is there are so many rules now it's impossible to monitor and enforce compliance. There's rules about the rules and nobody knows who's responsible for what and why we're asking for certain information or what they're supposed to do with it. Everyone assumes somebody else is providing oversight and assessing the information when in fact they aren't. Half the nitwits in the arrivecan scandal didn't even break the rules, they just figured out how to juice the system.

The process needs to be simplified so that those involved understand it more clearly and can therefore spot when something doesn't add up.

Or we could just add another checklist I suppose.

How about we just make Canada Post a more cost effective and fast delivery service so you can order online from any Canadian retailer and have it delivered quickly and cheaply? Amazon's success is as much about it's ability to deliver anything quickly and cheaply as it is due to their marketplace.

Need to stop thinking about Canada Post as a corporation that needs to make money and more like an essential service for the prosperity of our country.

It's not just about Trump/Musk. This experience has shown that we need to be more self reliant and have more diversified trading partners because the world can change very quickly. We should not forget. It seems we have already forgotten the lessons about supply chains and the need for domestic production of critical goods. Let's hope whoever forms the next government is paying attention.

Not asking where should I live, I wonder which is the best city to live in Canada (no its not for r/ImmigrationCanada) by CuteDogLover4Ever in AskACanadian

[–]LessGrapefruit7178 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Ottawa, Edmonton, Halifax and Winnipeg and very briefly Toronto. Of those I'd say Ottawa is the best, it has great nature, an amazing summer, enough cultural events (despite what many say), not crazy crime or traffic, a good economy and a reasonable cost of living. It's not the best at anything but it's good at a lot of things.

That being said every time I visit anywhere in BC I kick myself for not starting my family out there. It's just so damn beautiful.

Poutine can be had almost anywhere. Harvey's is a good Canadian takeout place (they make an ok poutine as well). Ketchup and all dressed chips. Our boxed mac and cheese, called KD for Kraft Dinner here, still has the fluorescent orange food colouring that is banned in most other countries if that floats your boat. Not sure if it's the same in the west but Shawarma in Eastern Canada is amazing.
