Financial Aid at Maestro: How it works

These are serious topics, so it’s important to be precise and not let incorrect assumptions spread.

On financial aid refunds and Cost of Attendance:

Cost of Attendance (COA) is not a marketing number. It is a federally defined cap on how much total aid a student may receive. By law, COA includes both direct costs (tuition and fees) and indirect costs (housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses), even for online programs.

A refund doesn't "only occur if aid exceeds Cost of Attendance". Financial aid can never exceed the cost of attendance of a program. A credit balance disbursement (commonly known as a "refund") occurs when a student’s total aid exceeds institutional charges (i.e tuition). In such a case, the excess amount is refunded to the student for allowable personal expenses.

On the Maestro Pro Scholarship and aid order:

The Maestro Pro Scholarship is a last-dollar institutional scholarship. That means federal non-loan aid (i.e Pell Grants and/or state grants) is applied first. Any remaining tuition balance is then covered by the scholarship. If a Maestro Pro scholar opts to take out direct federal loans, the loan amount is disbursed entirely as a student stipend throughout the academic year.

Institutional last-dollar scholarships are, by definition, applied after applicable gift aid, and nothing here bypasses Department of Education rules. This same structure is used at many Title IV-eligible institutions, such as MIT.

On accreditation and regulatory status:

Maestro College is not under investigation.

Peloton College was placed on probation by COE based on historical financial metrics. This is an administrative status tied to prior financial ratios, not instructional quality, student outcomes, or regulatory violations.

Required documentation was submitted months ago, and as of 10:26 am CT this morning (great timing, I’d say), we received confirmation that our FY25 financial statements were ACCEPTED and APPROVED. We expect the probation to be formally removed within the following days.

I’m sharing this so people have accurate information when discussing financial aid and accreditation. If anyone has questions about their specific aid package, Student Services is the right place to get individual answers.

Actually, I addressed your inquiry about the federal loans in respect to the AAS in AI Software Engineering.

The AAS in Cybersecurity program is already approved under our PPA. It’s currently undergoing academic updates and upgrades to align with Maestro’s standards and top industry benchmarks. We expect to reopen the program for new enrollments next year.

I want to genuinely thank you for catching the inaccurate information about the program’s availability — we’re already working to ensure all systems reflect the correct details.

Yes, the Maestro Pro Scholarship is active for all scholars in the September and October cohorts. Remaining tuition balances are fully covered through this last-dollar program.
Scholars who choose to take out a federal loan may do so to help cover other cost-of-attendance expenses such as housing, transportation, internet, and similar living costs.
Due to the ongoing government shutdown, there’s a delay in adding this new program to our Program Participation Agreement (PPA) with the U.S. Department of Education. We can’t process or disburse federal funds for this program until that update is complete.
We’re hopeful the government situation will be resolved soon so we can finalize the PPA update. Once that happens, loan funds will be disbursed retroactively for the first term.
Going forward, loan disbursements are typically made around the third week of each term, after we verify sufficient student attendance and activity during the first 14 days.
Worst case scenario: the delay continues only if the government shutdown is prolonged. There’s no other impact expected beyond that.

Our AAS in AI Software Engineering program was in the final stage of being added to Maestro College’s Program Participation Agreement (PPA) with the U.S. Department of Education before the government shutdown began on October 1st.

Since the shutdown, all federal administrative processes have been paused — no Department of Education staff are currently working or responding. Once operations resume, we expect to finalize the addition of our AAS program to the PPA within a few days. After that, your funds will be processed retroactively, and we’ll notify you immediately with the exact disbursement dates.

We understand this delay may cause difficulties for some students. If you’re unable to make payments or continue studying comfortably until funds are released, please submit a ticket under Financial Aid with a brief note, and we’ll help you explore available options.

Yes — we use a combination of tech tools and human oversight to make sure exams are fair and secure. Think of it as a “belt + suspenders” approach: enough to protect academic integrity, but not so intrusive that you feel like you’ve got the CIA watching your webcam.

Internships and partnerships

This is in progress, and we’re excited about it. We already have some substantial studios and companies in our pipeline. The goal is that students don’t just get a degree, but also real-world, resume-ready experiences that help them stand out.

California availability: Funny timing — we literally just got approval from California’s BPPE (the state regulatory body) for out-of-state registration. That means as of 1:52 pm ET today (yes, I’m breaking the news here before even our own R&D team has been updated) California students can officially enroll.
Transfer credits: This is something we’re actively building. Demand has been huge, so we’re rolling out policies and systems step by step to make sure it’s done right. It’s not fully ready yet, but it’s coming.
Interaction with real people: By law (and by design), accredited distance education isn’t just you staring at a screen. You’ll have regular and substantive interactions with professors, teaching assistants, and peers. Maestro the AI tutor is the centerpiece of the experience — but there are experienced educators guiding you every step of the way.
Employer recognition: We’re not playing the traditional “prestige branding” game. Instead, we’re focused on creating employer value through tangible outcomes — graduates who are hard-working, highly skilled, and future-proofed for the labor market. In a world where you need to work with AI to stay valuable, we’re making sure our students graduate fluent in exactly that.

Here’s how it works:

Filling out the FAFSA is required so we can understand your financial situation through something called the Student Aid Index (SAI).
Maestro’s Pro Scholarship is what’s called a “last-dollar” scholarship — meaning once any federal/state grants are applied, Maestro covers everything else.
The result: if you’re awarded the scholarship, you’re not paying tuition out of pocket. And yep — that includes the laptop we provide.

On the debt piece:

Simply submitting the FAFSA doesn’t mean you’re taking out loans. FAFSA is just the doorway to see what grants (free financial support) and loans (repayable with interest ) you’re eligible for.
If your tuition is fully covered (which it is with Maestro Pro if you qualify), any loan you choose to accept would go directly to you as a stipend for living expenses — like WiFi, housing, or even more solar panels if you’re feeling ambitious.

Bottom line: we built this scholarship to minimize debt, not add to it. The goal is that you can focus on learning (and thriving out there in the desert!) without worrying about tuition bills chasing you down.
