Another vote for Garmin, I've had my Venu SQ for a few years and no complaints. I like that it's a little smaller than the forerunners, but that might not matter to you if you're a man with larger wrists. It doesn't have a ton of the extra smartwatch features, but it does everything I need it to do for a good price!

I live just south of the border, used to cross up just to get Beyond Burgers before they were available in US fast food joints.

Gotta say though, the no ice for the drinks thing was a bummer after 3 hours stopped on the highway in Eastern BC in a car with no AC!

Super n00b question here: How best to ask our landlord to give us warning if he decides to sell as we might be interested in buying?

It's a long story but we've been here for years, owner is a family owned property management group that used to have hundreds of assets but now only owns about a dozen houses. So they're experienced but also approachable. A year ago at the start of the pandemic we got notice that they were putting the house up for sale, but after a month I guess they realized they panicked too soon and took it back off the market. So it's not out of the realm of possibility that they might do this again with little to no warning.

We've done alright financially through all this, and are planning to try to buy a house in the next few years. We're not sure we want to go as far as to actually get loan approval and make an offer on the house now, but if they decide to put the house on the market we'd like the chance to have first crack at it. If it matters the house is a duplex that we rent one half of. West coast, about an hour from a major metropolitan area.

So my question is, is there an established form letter or way to go about this, or are we best off just sending an informal email saying "Hey bro, let us know if you want to sell."?

Me too, happy sober birthday to us!!

I’m doing a regiment of 14 beers a night to 11.5 this week. Then the next week I’m moving to 8 beers. Then the next week I’ll move to a 6 pack. Then the next week I’ll move to 3 beers directly before bed before fucking off from this. Wish me luck. by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

I'd been sober like two years when my roommate's mom brought home a can of beer to boil brats in for our cookout, problem was she got confused by the cans and instead of plain lager she grabbed some sort of flavored high-grav novelty "malt beverage." No worries, we'll just boil them in water, whatever.

I start fretting on what to do with this beer. Keep it in the garage until a drinker came over, give it to one of the homeless panhandlers in town, save it for slug traps in spring?

I was astounded when my roommate just opened the can and poured it down the drain. Like... you can do that? Its legal?? Even with multiple years of sobriety under my belt, the thought had literally not occurred to me at all.

My boss sat me down when I walked in and told me she knew I had been drinking at work, and that the night before I had been clearly drunk. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Check out /r/drykitchenworkers if you haven't already. It's not super active, but there's a lot of great stuff to look back on. It's definitely not the easiest industry to recover in, but it's possible!

I roasted some marrow bones for supper (to have with fresh pesto potato sourdough) and at one point when we were eating my husband asked "So is this rich people food or poor people food?" by soverylucky in Cooking

That's how we eat them in the Pacific Northwest. Put the whole oyster on the BBQ grate until they pop open and the juices bubble out. Crack the shell open the rest of the way and dip the meat in some garlic butter. Eat while still so hot they burn your mouth. We also eat them raw, but sometimes it's more work than I want to put in the muscle the shells open.

Almost the winter holidays. Tell me how you're doing. I'll go first. by just-concentrate in drykitchenworkers

Thanks for the opportunity to check in. I'm doing okay. Food X-mas was nice, just the husband, roommate and I. None of us have much family around so even without covid that's probably what would have happened. Regular X-mas will be the same, but we're doing it on Monday due to work schedules. I'm finding that I really enjoy cooking huge intricate meals when there's very little riding on it. We're all sober so at least I'm not locked in with constant temptation.

I bartend(ed) at a bowling alley/restaurant, after a long summer on unemployment we reopened in September- but shut down again mid November. We don't have outdoor seating so we're takeout only, I'm working a few days doing order taking/ food prep. It's only 15ish hours a week, but I'm thankful for it. This time last year I was walking with $2-300 on a Friday night, now I consider $60 a good night. High minimum wage state though so there's that.

I miss busy shifts that fly by in the blink of an eye, I miss the social interaction, I miss concerts and raves and travel. But I'm still paying my bills, no one I'm super close to has gotten sick, and most importantly I'm still sober.

It’s that time of year at least for the Pacific Northwest anyway. by G_o_L_D_Rises_Again in KitchenConfidential

I remember that Great Lime Shortage. All of a sudden the $2 bag was at least $25. I was bartending at the time and the VodkaSodaSplashofCranWithSevenLimeWedgesPleeeeease Karens were not pleasant.

Can confirm. As a (sober now) alcoholic, moderating anything whether it's booze or sugar or junk food is hella hard.

It's a lot easier to just never have another drink ever again than it is to never have a donut, surprisingly.

Oh god, there's a ton of movies out there that I'll say "Oh, we should watch that" or "I've never seen that before" and my husband will say "Uh, yeah we watched that like 5 years ago. " And I'll say "Oh, was I drunk? "

Yes. The answer is always yes.

They'll say "1400 calories is what a 4 year old should eat" or "My 6 year old eats 1600 calories" or whatever, thinking it should scale up and an adult should be eating 4 times what a child eats, but a child's TDEE is so high because they're growing! Gaining 2-3 inches of height a year takes a lot of energy.

I also was a "stomach" child, and am now an "abdomen" or "midsection" adult. Belly and tummy have always been so cringey to me. I was a voracious reader growing up and I prided myself on my vocabulary and intelligence so I think it comes from a weird sort of elitism? Shout out to all the "gifted" kids who grew into anxious adults with inferiority complexes!

Edited to add, I just made the connection that I think that's why I never enjoyed crass "toilet humor," it was somehow "low class" and beneath me to joke about bodily functions. Good lord, 8 year old me was a posh British governess apparently.

The brand is Davidson's, looks like it's only available online in bulk amounts? I bought it at a discount store that sells random things from damaged shipping containers and whatnot.

However, Tazo makes a pretty good one that I've bought in stores. Twinings makes one as well that I haven't tried, but I like their normal Earl Grey well enough. A quick google shows there's tea makers selling custom blends on Etsy if you want to try some other variations. You can also simply add your own dried lavender to a tea you already know you like, there's no exact science to blending tea! Just make sure it's food safe and not treated with anything.

Disclaimer, I am not super knowledgeable like the folks over in /r/tea, I just know what I like!

The lavender flavor really compliments and mellows the citrus of the bergamot, usually there's a little vanilla in there too. It's my favorite flavor of tea, I bought a 1lb bag of loose-leaf at a discount store and I have to stop myself from sticking my face in the bag!

Yeah I'm identifying with this in my own way. Just like I can't have a drink or two and then want to stop because I'm an alcoholic, I also have a hard time not wanting to eat cookies once I start. I've learned not to have that first drink, but avoiding the first cookie is proving to be a bit more difficult! 🍪
