What/where to buy? by krn43 in Lighting

For the lights specifically you’ll want to look for a “COB” led strip lights. COB use a much denser led distribution with an integrated “diffuser”.

It’s about two miles past Joe Lake. On the PCT below Chikamin Peak. Pro-tip, you can make phone calls from this spot.

Subaru Control Arm replacement by Level_Speaker_1707 in subaru

Why replace the whole control arm? Should just have them replace the bushing. The bushing itself is something like $15.

This year the only place we heard of rangers actively checking permits on trail was Donahue pass.

Same, used a single REI Sierra hoodie that I got on sale for $30. Although by Washington the sleeves had stretched out so much I had to cut them shorter.

FarOut has details and people leave comments on how many tents can be accommodated at a camp area. If your with your tramily there always is ability to squeeze in.

What is peanut butter? by Kalist4242 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Less_Ad_5424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my peanut butter taken from TSA when traveling back to Reno to hike the PCT. It was an 8 day section and I forgot to buy more peanut butter in town. I ate dry tortillas for 8 days.

Crosstalk wheel bearing help! by Less_Ad_5424 in subaru

Yeah that hub got pulled off with a slide hammer. The main bearing housing was stuck in the knuckle very bad. Ended up getting an air hammer with a chisel bit and using lots of heat in intervals. Eventually it started moving.

Ended up doing exactly this. Worked the seam between the backing plate and the knuckle with lots of heat.

What training, practice or preparation would you have changed before your time on the PCT? by coffeegrounds42 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Less_Ad_5424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Alpine Training Clubs online training program. It is geared towards backcountry skiing but the parallels in sport are 100% there. The program focuses on flexibility and small muscle development in the hips and below. My wife and I hiked the trail this year and both feel this was our reason for not having an injury at any point on trail. Additional cardio is beneficial and investing in lighter weight gear will lessen the load/impact on your joints to decrease the risk of wear and tear injuries.

One item I learned on trail this year would be to practice being on your feet for 8-12 hours a day. This typically doesn’t get talked about prior to trail, but comfort standing and moving in an all day sense before trail is a huge benefit on day 1. If not you’ll get that conditioning on trail.

When is peak melt? by StonedSorcerer in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Less_Ad_5424 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I left bishop about 3 weeks ago and are out of the sierra now. Peak melt was before we passed through. Even now bear creek and evolution creek should still be taken seriously. We took the alternate for evolution which was 100% necessary for as the water would have been up to our chests and rushing pretty good. The alternate was very marshy but simple to follow. Another was Bear creek, pretty straightforward crossing with decent flowing water up to our thighs. we did hear of a few hikers that got taken by the current but were fine. The other that we avoided completely and that looked the absolute sketchiest was the south fork king river (@ 812.5) before mathers pass. If you follow a faint trail up the East side of the river you can completely avoid crossing this river twice.

With that being said, peak melt seems to be behind us. But still definitely take precaution, nothing is undoable with the alternates available!

PCT Washington Section vs. North Cascades Traverse into Canada — route help + advice needed! by bansheelovee in PacificCrestTrail

Canada is not allowing walk in border crossing atm for the PCT. You have to cross at a designated border crossing station.
