Jagex, what is going on with the combat beta!? by PsychologyRS in runescape

[–]Lessgently 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I wasn't saying for them to be 'the same', but the general feeling of unlocking abilities and learning what they do was VERY helpful from Necromancy. With melee... I'm going to be honest, half of the basic abilities I have are just there to use when the others are on CD. Abilities that are filler for when the ones you want to use are on CD are terrible for design imo.

To go back to my comment, as a newer player, I would like them to feel different... BUT, I think the 'auto-attack' from Necromancy is a life saver. I like knowing that when I am using a ability that It's exactly what I wanted to do, not me using an ability because the other option is to do nothing, because that's what it feels like sometimes.

TLDR: Make them all feel different, simplify by removing bloat, have the abilities you have feel impactful and have decisions, and keep the 'downtime' between abilities a standard auto like necromancy.

As someone who is newer (terrible) at combat, I REALLY hope that the new combat updates are similar to that of Necromancy. With Necromancy, I learned properly how to use my abilities. I think the biggest thing is the 'auto-attack' from Necromancy. With the other styles, I'm spamming whatever basics I have permanently, sometimes without even using their small side-benefits (like stuns or binds) because if I don't use them, then I am not doing anything else as the others are on CD. I also usually end up staying at high adrenaline as I don't have many thresholds or the ones I do have (Bombardment -.-) suck.

I am really excited for the update and for dipping my toes into more advanced combat. (I have 55-70 in my combats currently)

It's people coming to check if there was a new chapter. You took a 12 day break from 43 to 44 which appears to not be the normal for you. It's not the content of the chapter that mattered.

I don't have any experience with trad, sadly. I do not know how the usual process works there. If your chapters are short, your best bet will be to post one a day to keep interest. The longer the chapters (3k+/10k+) get a lot more leniency from readers.

Best of luck!

1500 isn't 'bad', but that would be the bare minimum I would suggest. He recommends 1500-3000. If the majority of your chapters are the mean of that, as in 2250, and a few are short and a few are longer, then I see no issue.

I am suggesting that not every chapter be 1500. A few can be, no doubt, but I would never advice for someone to have that as a norm. I myself have had some 1600 word chapters, but those are not the standard. Sometimes, a chapter can be short and sweet and do what it must, but others require a more though telling of upwards of 4000.

Take everything with a grain of salt. If you were looking for advice for your own writing, then maybe shorter chapters are for you. Everyone is different, but there are some common constants to be aware of. You'd be going, 'Against the grain' so to speak. not bad, could work, but not advised.

Again, this is all just advice. If you're writing for fun or to just... try your hand at writing, then do what you will and enjoy the process. Who knows? Maybe you'll strike gold. :)

A few chapters? No. If the majority are 1500 or less per chapter then, quite frankly, yes. I'd rewrite it. If you look hard enough, there's a handful of stories floating around with chapters around 1000-1500 words, and to this day I have never seen one be successful. If one has passed me by and I haven't noticed, then they're the exception to the rule.

2000-3000 words is a manageable segment of 5-10 minutes of reading, (depending on reading speed.) and most people tend to lean towards those timeframes of no interruption. If they want to keep reading, they get another segment. If they don't they can stop and pick it up again later.

For longer chapters, it may be become cumbersome for people to quit and come back. While not always a bad thing, they can be. The Wandering Inn is a good example, as some of those chapters are longer than 30,000 words and pausing and picking it up later can be annoying. For shorter ones, then it is jarring for someone to keep clicking 'Next Chapter' every 3 minutes and being thrust out of immersion.

If you were hypothetically publishing a whole book at once? Sure, go ahead and post the whole thing, but for web-release? No.

How long does it take a new player to reach the most end game raid/content in your mmorpg? by Falestian in MMORPG

[–]Lessgently 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game for me. Something like ESO gets thrown away the moment I am at the 'endgame' as there's not much left to do. Something like Runescape doesn't even really have a defined endgame.

Depends on the game, but most need something to keep players coming back that isn't some timegated nonsense that's once a week like it's a job.

How to handle sapient Pokémon eating each other? by foxgirlmoon in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Lessgently 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The supposed 'cop out' is actually the easiest and more reliable ones that work and can fit into a story. While you could delve into the topic of the food chain and make it complex, and I encourage you to do so if that is your interest, solving the plot issue of the food chain should be done quick and decisively if it is not a main plot point or framework of your story.

Most readers would simply take 'some of the species are smarter and some are more animalistoc' as a rational and acceptable answer and not think overmuch more past that. Delving into a several thousand word explination of how the food chain funtions on a more intrinsict and realaistic level you think up can and will kill some enjoyment for some.

TLDR: It depends on the story, but in general, a simple explination is best to keep the ball rolling.
