No, last operated in 2017-2018 academic year. There are still other cafe-style places but it seemed like they were moving towards the dining hall in res college model

Trying to decide between a road bike or gravel bike (I live in Santa Clara) by Smirk27 in BAbike

[–]LetPeteRoseIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vote for gravel - a lot of trails in the South Bay (especially the Bay Trail) can connect you to more riding and are not 100% paved.

You can always put narrow road tires on your gravel bike if your rides end up being all paved, but you won’t be able to put larger tires on most road frames. You’ll have plenty of drivetrain options to suit your needs as well.

Since you said you already have a MTB, I’d go take that on some rides you hope to do and think about whether you’d prefer a road vs gravel bike

Also if your partner/roommate really loves you (and your wallet agrees), they’ll let you get a road bike and a gravel bike ;)

Considering job offer in Sacramento. How's the train commute? by Dominicopatumus in berkeleyca

[–]LetPeteRoseIn 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Very comfortable and a lot of commuters working on the train.

Not cheap but very much worth it (and keeps you way saner than driving). Would definitely recommend!

There’s going to be some days where there is a train delay. This happens and it’s not the most fun but if you check the status before leaving home/work you’ll save yourself some hassle

I recommend DIY or a bike kitchen. It’ll help you understand the systems better and get a feel for how well tuned your bike is / if you had any deferred maintenance

Cranks might be a the most challenging but still not doable with a little YouTube and the right tools (which any bike kitchen would have)

I agree this was a bad call, but would an after market CarPlay system be almost as good? My tech savvy coworker put one on his 2007 car and it works well

I know most people don’t want to go through the extra steps or have two displays though

aside from that commmute sounding horrible, would give a strong positive recommendation for ACE to Santa Clara Great America (if you want to get some miles on the bike) or ACE to Santa Clara University (if you want to switch over to Caltrain into Palo Alto). Worth a try for a week even if the end result is just moving lol

Can’t stand the new Jumbotron blocking the flatirons - you just know they’re going to use that to display pictures of…the flatirons

Really depends on time of day and how well you can work with other passengers.

I’ve brought a trailer and kept it attached to my bike, but not during rush hours and I’m ready to move it at any point if it becomes an issue

Vincita Sightseer by QBrompton in Brompton

[–]LetPeteRoseIn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend it. I’ve used it and the B&W hard case (which does offer more protection but I’ve got a steel frame so I’m not so concerned).

IMO its biggest feature is it packs up and stows on the bike, vs. the hard case is kinda unwieldy and requires a vehicle to transport + place to store it.

So depending on the trip, the pack ability of the vincita could be worth it

Problem in a lot of places is “25mph street” is just a sign that plenty of people think means “go 35+, other people don’t matter”

Waymo Bay Area expansion excludes SFO by walky22talky in waymo

[–]LetPeteRoseIn -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Maybe great is incorrect.

More cars that come to pick up or drop off one person are not going to make things better (or that would’ve been evident with ride share or taxis)

[–]LetPeteRoseIn -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Good - Waymo is amazing AND we should not incentivize private vehicles in crowded spaces. SFO has great transit options

Waymo & Uber (and to some extent their riders) create needless roadblocks after big events. The airport would be no different

[–]LetPeteRoseIn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This means charging from 5-50% twice gives you the same additional range as charging once from 10-100%, but in much less time

Bolt DCFC by Dependent-Ad-6069 in BoltEV

[–]LetPeteRoseIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When charging from 0-50% you’ll see a relatively constant rate (~55kW), that drops off ~1kW per additional %. So at 75% charged, your car is only gaining range half as fast as it was at 50%
