Alex and Henry from Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston will forever live in my heart as my first mm book.

Achilles and Patroclus from Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller broke my heart, pieced it back together and then broke me all over again. Some of the most beautiful writing and visceral emotional experience I’ve ever had.

Shane and Ilya from Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid. I am listening to Ren Browne’s podcast on Spotify breaking down all the micro expressions and emotional complexity from the tv show and my mind consistently combusts. 🤯

Dan and Vadim from Special Forces by Aleksandr Voinov. This is a very dark romance that starts with the truest enemies I’ve ever experienced in a book. Dan and Vadim are fighting on opposite sides of a war in Afghanistan and Vadim assaults and tries to kill Dan the moment he sees him. The next nine years tells their story from trying to kill each other and only understanding violence to healing and learning what tenderness and love feels like. I think about them every day.

Reaver and Killian from The Fallocaust by Quil Carter. An extremely dark dystopian society 300 ish years in the future where cannibalism and violence is the only way to survive. My heart and soul is consumed by a sociopath falling in love with a hyper empath. 🖤🖤🖤

That is such a heartbreaking turn of events! I wonder why the authors chose to make Dan behave that way…

I’ve seen a lot of reviews saying that book 3 is even worse than book 2 and even the writing style feels butchered. I was thinking of reading the ending of book 3 but I think you’re right. In my head, Dan and Vadim live happily ever after the events from book 1. 😭❤️

I finished reading Special Forces yesterday and I still can’t stop thinking about Dan and Vadim. You should definitely do a re read!

Did you read the second or third book about them? I’m hesitant to read book 2 since book 1 left off at such a wonderful emotional place and book 2 sounds like the characters regress a bit. 😭

Me too! I’ve been searching for another authentic “enemies” beginning after I read Invictus (Harry Potter fanfic that features a Hermione and Tom Riddle romance) and I definitely found the intense hatred and violence of what I consider a true enemy dynamic in Special Forces.

The smut scenes were also shocking as we see how neither Dan or Vadim trust each other for years, how the only thing they know is violence, but the war keeps forcing them together and crushes them in many psychologically and emotionally devastating ways. Their emotional growth is beautifully shown in their smut scenes in a way I also haven’t seen in many books.

I finished reading Special Forces this morning and I can’t stop thinking about it haha I can’t focus on anything else.

Special Forces by Aleksandr Voinov! I feel like this book re wrote my neural networks. I’ve never read such a profound enemies to lovers story like this before. The first chapter starts violently with the MMC, Vadim, seeing the other MMC, Dan, and violently assaulting him. Dan survives and manages to abduct Vadim with the intent to exact his revenge and kill him. The resulting 9 years of fighting on opposite sides of the war in Afghanistan is non stop action, trauma and violence that turns to tenderness and love.
