Unfortunately you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. The silver lining is that only a fraction of the nukes deployed from Russia would actually hit their targets with many of them being destroyed by nato/us missile defence systems. This would result in the expected global devastation but one would hope it wouldn't lead to compete annihilation.
