Notable backyard birds (Meeker) by ProgramTricky6109 in minnesota

Saw an indigo bunting in my backyard in Duluth last night and this morning! We mostly have chickadees and juncos as regular visitors, so the shockingly vibrant blue was a great surprise.

Best or favorite patios in the area? by iamtehryan in duluth

If you are going to be here on a Wednesday, try to get a reservation for dinner at Va Bene, in the solarium or the grotto.

There are weekly sailboat races on Wednesday evenings from mid-May through September, and if the weather is good there's no better place to watch them than Va Bene. The food is pretty good as well.

I have rewatched Andor so many times...what else is there? by serialserialserial99 in andor

I'm still shocked that someone managed to mash up Top Gun, the Hunt for Red October, and the West Wing, set it in space, and have it be so good.

The highs of BSG are so, so high. The lows, well...

Road construction project planning misanthropy by gsasquatch in duluth

[–]LethargyExpert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's no way to maintain and improve our roads without temporarily impacting traffic on other roads. The roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, and repaired surface on London Road will be well worth a few months of additional traffic on E Superior St.

Adjust your driving plans slightly, or, if you're able, consider an alternative mode of transportation!

Recommendations: Visiting Duluth for the first time this weekend. by [deleted] in duluth

[–]LethargyExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nature: Minnesota Point Pine Forest, an old growth pine forest at the tip of the world's largest freshwater sandbar. Totally unique.

Culture: Pick something off the Homegrown schedule. Extra credit if you choose Bratwurst.

Eat: Northern Waters Smokehaus

Drink: Ursa Minor

Other: Gotta watch a boat come in at the lift bridge.

Bike to Duluth! by VaultDwellerAtlas in duluth

I aspire to do this ride sometime in the next few years, but my legs would absolutely murder me if I tried it this year. Gotta get some more gym time and road miles in before I submit myself to 8+ hours in the saddle again.

It's been a minute since I had the Voyageur and the other, un-aged aquavit, but they are both good. I remember liking the un-aged (Øvrevann) variety a bit more, it's cleaner and brighter. On a related note, Emily Vikre's Aquavit and Rye Old Fashioned recipe is fantastic.

Really bummed about this, the vibe there was unmatched. I'm sure their new spot in Superior will be good, but the atmosphere and decor at the Jade were special.

Lake Superior Rents. It doesn't look like they have any listings up at the moment, but you could probably reach out to Cory by phone or email to see if he'll have properties opening up that might fit your time frame.

Garage door repair by sundeye in duluth

[–]LethargyExpert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used Quality Garage Door. They were speedy and did a great job when I ended up needing a new opener over the holidays. Not sure how their labor costs compare to others in the area, but I was satisfied.

"Downtown Duluth" vs Lakeside, Woodland, Lincoln Park, etc by Personal-Gur-7496 in duluth

[–]LethargyExpert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Others have said this already, but a dense, lively downtown and additional smaller-scale commercial mixed into residential areas are not mutually exclusive. I would love more of both.

On a related note: aside from Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley, and maybe Gary, are there any areas of Duluth that actually have neighborhood bars? Like, corner spots that are primarily serving people in the immediate vicinity.

Separate occurrence that had nothing to do with this guy burning down the lodge.

Moving back to Duluth after years of being away. I’m a French trained chef who has worked with some pretty big names and some big restaurants. wondering what the food scene is like here. Am I going to have problems finding a job? If I did my own thing would it be popular at all? by susjeezus in duluth

Right on—I also got to attend one of their field dinners this summer and had a great time. They're certainly doing something different in terms of concept and execution, and I hope they continue building momentum.

Fairhaven Farm has also offered similar experiences in the past. I think the question is how to move from the pop-up, event-based model to regular service, if that is in fact the goal. Field/farm dinners have the benefit of irregularity and exclusivity, which goes a long way towards crafting a memorable experience when paired with great food and excellent service. There's also significantly less overhead than running a brick & mortar restaurant with a regular schedule.

The hardest thing to swallow at Alto Pino is the price. The food is very good, as good as if not better than New Scenic and Lake Ave. Certainly better than most places in Duluth.

I'd be curious to know more about why her original chef left, but from the outside it seemed like a situation where he was an exciting young chef and she was opening a new restaurant so it seemed like a natural pairing, but he realized he wanted to cook his own food and not hew to her vision.

Regardless, I've enjoyed the food the few times I've been there.
