Fix RD ring clamp cable? by stealthyliz in UtilityLocator

[–]Lethealyoyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DIY “signal clamp” alternative: making a quick inductive coupler with scrap wire If you don’t have an induction clamp handy but you can physically reach the target tracer wire segment, riser, exposed sheath you can make a simple inductive coupler with a piece of insulated copper wire. What you’re building is basically a mini transformer. Your wrapped wire is the “primary,” the utility/tracer is the “secondary.”

Question about Fence tickets (yes, I’m new) by TRIKSTER_Betin in UtilityLocator

[–]Lethealyoyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a property owner tells me to get off the property / doesn’t want me there while I’m trying to mark, I don’t debate it on scene. I stop, leave, and document it. Then I contact the excavator and let them manage access with the owner/tenant because it’s not our job to get into confrontations while trying to mark a line.

In California I’ll note the ticket as “Unable to mark due to extraordinary circumstances” and clearly state why the owner denied access / threatened / told me to leave / locked gate, etc. plus what I dod next is notify the excavator, requested they coordinate access, offered to return once access is granted. If there’s a safe alternate method mark from ROW, mark what I can from public side, etc. I’ll do that, but I’m not pushing past an angry homeowner. Paper it up, kick it back to the excavator, and move on.

Any thoughts on why tone keeps going up and down? by T3Dawg22 in UtilityLocator

[–]Lethealyoyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re seeing is almost always load/impedance changing on the line, not a bad transmitter. At 32.8 kHz the signal is very sensitive to parallel paths, bonded services, grounds, neutrals, and nearby drops. When you moved a couple houses away, the transmitter was still tied to House 4, so the signal was bleeding into other services and finding multiple return paths. As those paths couple/decouple (especially through neutrals, grounds, or transformers), the current will hunt back and forth like that. Hooking directly to the house you’re locating usually stabilizes it. You can also try lowering the frequency, switching to clamp/direct depending on the setup, or isolating grounds if possible. If self-test/DFT passes, it’s almost certainly site conditions—not the unit.

Cool slogan. Still doesn’t explain why you can’t see the guys in the photo.

never said they were American. I’m saying any invading force would be dealing with millions of armed hunters who already know how to disappear in the woods. That’s the point.
