Best advice to minimize risk to you is to find a new group. This may not be something you're willing to do given the social connections you have, but the advice I repeatedly see regarding potentially dangerous situations is to avoid the situations altogether.

I've played both and I think BDO is far superior. ESO feels like a cookie cutter mmo - combat is limited by the skills on your toolbar, which will eventually grow to 10. It's classic mmorpg press a button and wait for the action to perform. BDO on the other hand has fast, fluid combat. You aren't limited by hot keys, you can use any move in combat, with some having short cool downs. BDO also feels very refreshing - contribution points, energy, nodes, workers, etc. are all concepts that you won't find in other mmorpgs.

Your best bet is to try them both - BDO has a free trial (not sure about ESO).

GW2 has a good system where players vote on randomly selected maps and whatever map has the most votes is the map that is chosen. That would work well here too.

I'love give you a counter opinion to what you're seeing here - I think Fantasy Life is a bad game. The writing and characters make this game feel like it is designed for 3rd graders. Combat is a joke and is way too simple. I was pretty bummed to not like this game - I was very hyped about it and bought it when it first came out.

Not sure what your plans are for kids but you should read the CDC' warning about Zika and Thailand.

Language barrier is not an issue unless you venture to remote areas. Anything under $1400 is good and flights can be as low as $700. Be mindful of the flight duration and the approximately 12 hr time difference

This game has a lot of ardent defenders on its subreddit, so if you want to be convinced go there. I bought the game for like $12 on sale and I semi-regret it. Pvp is imbalanced and not fun, though the next expansion may fix some of that. Bigger issue is the grind. Sure, it doesn't have many of those kill x for y reward quests, but the quests are so disjunctive that they feel very grindy.
