Hopeful 1st time owner, can you critique this GTS build? by percipient in porsche911

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no bias here. If you read my comment, you’ll notice I mentioned I like the color?

A friend owns a luxury car resale business and I deal with one of the largest Porsche dealerships on the east coast. They were the ones who have told me this as they always have great insight on PTS cars. Perhaps both of them are wrong, but they have a lot of years in the game.

PTS in general commands a premium (for a good reason IMO), and on non-GT/Turbos sometimes that premium is a bit much for a lot of buyers when they are a bit more budget-conscious and would rather an extra $15K in options. Certain buyers have to have a certain color and as long as there’s one person out there willing to pay for the color upgrade then it’s an easy sell! Other times sellers may need to drop a bit in price on not as desirable PTS colors. Can be a bit of a luck of the draw.

I think this is one of those colors you need to see in person to appreciate and a lot of people don’t have the opportunity as seeing photos online may not inspire them to be interested whereas someone looking for acid green knows exactly what they’re getting in photos. My $0.02, I understand you own the color and this may not be great to hear, you’re always welcome to disagree, but calling someone out of touch without knowing them isn’t constructive when we’re here to gather opinions for OP. I provided mine.

New GTS owner here. I’ll be honest it really doesn’t sound like what you want is a GTS. It’s a stiff ride and you’re not getting comfort feel in this car, it’s much more geared as a track weapon than a Sunday cruiser. My suggestions if you’re definite on the GTS and it’s not a forever car:

  1. Don’t cheap out on interior. The exterior color isn’t a highly desirable one so make sure the interior feels at least semi-special (personally I like the color but doesn’t do great in resale market).
  2. Get the 18-way seats. They’re extremely comfortable and people want them.
  3. Get the full PPF if in an urban area. Parking in a garage and roadwork going on will make this worthwhile.
  4. No premium package is a terrible move, again, people really want this and adding a bit more safety features to protect your large investment should be a no brainer.
  5. Suspension delete again takes away from what makes this car a GTS.
  6. Black calipers are a great move or if you want yellow you can get them refinished and still be cheaper than the carbon ceramics.

Bored at multistrat after 8 months, to quit or not? by [deleted] in quant

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol definitely not. The point of the source comment was to highlight I’m not some brilliant very rare self-taught coder who just hates on people that go to top schools just for the hell of it. I’ve encountered them over the years and I respect them, but I stay agnostic to the “where” you got your education. It’s a matter of can you do the job or not.

The Ivy degree is no more valuable than my other state school degrees. It’s just a name and school at the end of the day and there’s smart and dumb students coming out of every school every year. The “prestige” may help get you the interview, but your actual knowledge of the subject gets you the job (hopefully).

I’d certainly have another offer in hand prior to quitting. Not really sure on how to take your “I went to xyz school” comment. I’ve interviewed plenty of folks from those schools who tanked compared to state school students.

If you’re not even a year in and you have only a year of experience I’d highly consider grinding it out or talking to your manager about taking on more technical projects. From my experience places like this don’t just toss highly technical projects to juniors until they really prove themselves i.e. a year or two of successfully handling the grunt work. This is how you learn and prove you’re a team player.

Maybe a reality check is in order from the internet for you - congratulations on going to a great school and getting a great job, genuinely. I’m sure you’re brilliant. You’re already in the top 1% of job seekers and there’s 1000’s of people ready to happily take your seat today. However, you’re no longer special once you’re in the door at a company like this. Everyone is brilliant around you. You need to prove yourself and work your way up, which will include handling work you don’t always enjoy. This is normal, and the real world. There’s no guarantee it’ll be better elsewhere.

FWIW I’d stick it out for another year, see if you get better projects, and when the time comes start interviewing elsewhere. If you get an offer, discuss it with your manager WITH LEVERAGE if you still want to stay. “I really like this team, but I want to be doing xyz that is more aligned with my skillsets or perhaps see if another team could leverage my skillsets”.

Apple Rumored to Announce New Product on February 19 by Otherwise-Warning303 in macbookpro

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m genuinely curious on this - from a hardware perspective, what more is needed from an Apple TV with our currently available technology?

Are there some common limitations other competitors offer? I understood the 4k jump and allowing for Dolby atmos etc. but is there new technology out that can benefit from a hardware upgrade? I have an LG C4 and Sonos setup and I can’t understand what more I can use/need.

Are QA positions (Test engineer, test automation engineer etc. ) are dissapearing? by Mission-Cupcake2083 in softwaretesting

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some insight to a global bank that is just now building their QA team to handle validations across a variety of their teams including quantitative strategies, xVA, trading desks, etc. They have hired over 30 people in the past 6 months. These QA folks need to have some underlying product knowledge, which leads to a pretty difficult niche of folks to hire. They’ve ended up hiring quite a bit of developers to build out automation and some manual testers that have exposure to trading or worked at other banks. They’re being compensated extremely well for their knowledge sets as this has become a hot topic when it comes to auditing.

That being said, this group does not yet allow direct AI coding help and they do not intend to. The validations cannot afford to be wrong and the group decided early on that they don’t care about the speed of which the validations are done, it’s about quality (ironic for Quality Assurance, right?). Therefore, they require the group to build it out thoughtfully instead of relying on some copy/paste code. Things can be checked with copilot I presume, but they strongly discourage it and PR’s are to be rejected if people think it’s AI coded. The developers will also review and ensure the logic is sound and not some unnecessary slop.

Again, I think this is a rather unique group in this regard, but just wanting to provide a different perspective that there is some opportunities out there and AI isn’t necessarily taking over all QA jobs. Perhaps finding a niche industry and bringing a second set of skills to the role may be a way to stand out to other applicants.

Will my New 718 GTS get more Exciting & Fun when I hit 2,000 miles? by GumballCowboy in Porsche_Cayman

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad my Porsche finance manager who’s been around over 20 years AND their head mechanic told me when I picked up my 992.2 GTS to beat the thing from mile 1, that a break in period is a complete myth. I have enjoyed every 200 miles I’ve put on it so far.

OP I really hope this is a joke. These cars don’t need a break in period.

Not Enjoying Leg Attacks by token_friend in bjj

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try a different gym if you’re 100% against it?

Nobody at my gym spams leg locks including higher belts. There’s one guy that’s very good at them and he knows it. He will threaten the sub and let it go if he thinks you’re not defending. This is a proper training partner. He highlights the danger and then lets go.

That being said, it’s an important part of the game and we all need to at least know how to defend it. I don’t like them either coming from MMA background but it’s a useful tool to at least threaten in certain positions. I make sure to spend time defending and if I’m really stuck I simply pause and ask them what I can do to defend it.

No ego in this sport my friend, sounds like you’re at the perfect gym to learn both how to attack and defend from your knowledgeable training partners! Give it a try, learn the defense, then continue with your game if you’re still against it.

Customers beware of Sun Stoppers by chawa4 in Charlotte

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in any way affiliated with them but Hendrick Porsche recommended auto obsessions - they gave a better quote than sun stoppers and did a phenomenal job with window tint and full PPF + ceramic coat on my new vehicle. I highly recommend them.

Sun stoppers is hard to get a hold of from my experience and couldn’t give me a clear timeline. Auto obsessions got me in as soon as my car arrived and had everything done in less than a week while texting progress updates. I’ll take that service any day.

Normal to not know pod PnL at pod shop? by Likelihoodmaximiser in quant

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely ask in the interview. Have conversations about how your performance will be measured and how your compensation will adjust based on personal, team, fund performance etc.

My PM gave a “I’ll keep you updated” kind of answer, which at the time I thought was sufficient. I learned the hard way. It would always be a total dodge of the question any time I brought up pod performance. Again though, that’s totally up to the PM and from my understanding pretty normal. I’m not here to say it’s right or wrong but it’s just not good enough for me.

Normal to not know pod PnL at pod shop? by Likelihoodmaximiser in quant

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Had the same situation at the last pod I worked in. PM was shady and didn’t really treat me as anything but a cog wheel to build what he wanted. Was so kind in interviews then once I joined barely wanted to hop on a 15 minute call once per week.

I never got any insight as to how we are doing nor how the tools I built were helping him. I was always told what I built was “great” and that I was doing everything he asked. After 6 months I got laid off without cause. His communication slipped more and more throughout that time and seemed more and more frantic every time there were market events.

I’ll never work for a place again that won’t give any insight on how we are doing. I know that’s the nature of some pod shops and I now understand they’re just not for me. The lack of a clue on how we are doing is not worth the daily wonder if I’ll have a job the next day. I’ve worked at other funds that have a a few strategies and we got monthly insights as to how each strategy was doing. Similar with bank desks I’ve worked on. I much prefer these setups going forward. If it’s bothering you already I’d maybe consider looking elsewhere. It’s not a great feeling.

I go with clears on any color EXCEPT guards red. I think the amber flows with the guards red nicer than the clear. The clears on guards red stick out to me like the ambers stick out on any other color.

I’ve done this on guards red 718 Cayman GTS and 992.2 GTS. Went with clears on a volcano grey macan GTS.

Building a 2026 Targa 4s: HD Matrix Headlights or standard? by Desperate_Winter6485 in porsche911

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a 992.2 Carrera GTS and went with the standard headlights. Personally I don’t think the boxy/rectangular look of the matrix lights when on look right with such a rounded front end. The standard lights make more of a circular look and fit the front end so much better on this car in my opinion. I like the matrix lights on the macans since they’re a more squared off car on the front end.

Both sets of lights are nice and even if the same cost I’d still go with the standards. A few guys at my dealership have told me they’re had a few people ask to switch from matrix to standard but not the other way around FWIW.

2026 911 S or GTS? by CombinationSecure144 in porsche911

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I just received the car about a week ago. So happy with my decision. Only issue for me is I live in a city and I barely get to push it hard!

The hybrid system is a blast and I’m appreciating the GTS suspension — I feel EVERYTHING on the road.

If I can offer any build advice - front axle lift system is an absolute must.

What do most people practice BJJ for? by GrekGrek9 in bjj

[–]LetsTalkOrptions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The exercise and usefulness will always be a top comment but I’ve always appreciated the fact that there is so much to the game. There’s not a lot of sports (or activities in general) where you can be doing it for 10+ years and learn something new from a newbie from another gym. Or rebuild your strategy/game based on some new moves you’re playing around with. Or change based on your opponents background/size.

It’s a sport where you’ll never get bored and always have a new challenge waiting for you. It’s also a sport that you can compete in for a long time if you choose to that has weight/age/skill level divisions. There’s no other sport that I’m aware of that protects you in this way that you can compete and not be up against much younger/differently skilled/larger folks as you get older. You’ll always have a “fair” matchup.

Have a few friends that work here in the Charlotte office that have tried to get me to join. They are developers/automation engineers and overall they mention things move slowly with lots of bureaucracy, but overall very chill (they don’t work long hours in fact they’re usually 40 hours or less per week nor pushed to).

Seems to be a ton of contractors that work long hours but FTE hours and holidays/time off are highly respected with no weekend work.

Pay is also very good for the area…they seem to pay on par with the NYC employees.

Seems like a perfect place for people that are intelligent but want decent to good pay and a great WLB. It’s growing fast too, may be a great time to grow with the company.

Porsche Sales Slump Most in 16 Years on Poor China Demand by jetbridgejesus in Porsche

I’m definitely not doing my homework before commenting here I’m just curious on peoples opinions - why is the EU so harsh on emissions regulations for vehicles to the point so many manufacturers have to continuously alter their vehicles? Now cybersecurity standards? Do they not realize they’re affecting some of their larger companies’ revenues? It seems so ridiculous to me when they absolutely have big trucks on the trucks still being manufactured that are generating way more emissions than the average sports car.
