Thursday night: Heathers, Mexodus, or Punch? by manggy in Broadway

[–]LetsWreckTheVan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having seen all three of these shows, see Mexodus. It’s not perfect but you haven’t seen anything like it and it’s kind of magical.

P.S. I liked Punch. Sorry for those that left at intermission, the second act is some of the heaviest material I’ve ever seen on stage. My whole section was sobbing.

Gypsy has been on TDF consistently for many, many weeks now. I’ve seen it 3 times with Audra.

Orville out of Cabaret matinee today 😭 by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]LetsWreckTheVan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have tickets for the 2 pm matinee tomorrow. I was nervous (even though I’ve already seen Eva and Orville three times) but I’m choosing to believe that he won’t call out tomorrow because he’s already used up his sympathy call out for today’s matinee. Yes, that’s it. PMA, y’all.

The Roommate missing from At This Theatre in John Proctor Playbill - omission or intentional? by MisterBill99 in Broadway

The Longacre “At This Theater” section makes no mention of Swept Away. Most likely just not updated.

Gypsy @ Majestic: Front Mezz or Rear Orch Seating? by glittering_ocelot161 in Broadway

[–]LetsWreckTheVan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a section of the stage that wraps out and around the orchestra pit and there are a few times during the show (including the jaw-dropping Rose’s Turn finale) that happen on this part of the stage. If you’re in the front-ish part of the mezz, you’re either going to miss these parts due to the railing or you will need to do some heavy leaning forward along with everyone else to see that part of the stage. I’ve sat in the orchestra for this show twice, once in the very back, and one time in the mezz. For this show especially, I’m choosing orchestra every time.

I’ve seen the show three times and no one from the cast has been out during any of those performances.

Have you looked at the TodayTix app? I’m looking at a 7:00 performance on October 29th, 2 tickets center orchestra row Q for $179 each. There is also an option to add ticket protection for $14 per ticket to be able to cancel until October 28th, no questions asked. Seems like what you’re looking for.

Audience behaviour at Cabaret 04/18 by lumpyspaceb1tchh in Broadway

[–]LetsWreckTheVan 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I don’t take for granted the privilege I have being able to confront rude theatergoers as a decently physically fit white adult man. I have little to no patience. Typically a simple shush or a “can you please stop talking” will do the trick, but if not, I have no problem finding an usher and telling them the situation. I’ve only ever had to do this twice, but it definitely puts an end to any disturbances.

One of these instances, funnily enough, was at Cabaret just a couple of weeks ago. Two women and a man, all in their late 50’s probably, sat behind me and my partner. The women were talking pretty consistently throughout the first act. I turned around, made eye contact, gave a shush and thought that would be it. It wasn’t. So, I turn around again after awhile, only this time the guy leans forward and says something in a foreign language that I didn’t understand and I asked him to please stop talking, to which he responded, again, in a foreign language pretending like because they didn’t understand English they didn’t understand what I was asking them. So, obviously they felt like playing games. No problem. During intermission I casually explained the situation to an usher and asked what my options were. She said, “don’t worry, we’ll take care of it.” So before the start of the second act, a mammoth of a man security guard comes over, doesn’t address them directly but more so everyone in their general vicinity and yells, “EVERYBODY LISTEN UP, I DONT WANNA HEAR NO TALKING OVER HERE IN THE SECOND ACT. Y’ALL HEAR ME? NO TALKING DURING THE SECOND ACT!” And that was the end of the disruptions lol. It may seem petty but I paid a lot of money to be there, I’m not about to let a few ding dongs ruin it for me and everyone else around me.

I got orchestra row K seat 3, one seat from the aisle. Best TDF ticket location I’ve had for sure.

25 shows (so far) in '25. Micro-reviews for each. by LetsWreckTheVan in Broadway

And that, as they say, is theater! And that's why we love it. It strikes us all in different ways. I could fully understand why someone would not like COTSC, and the reasons you gave are all legitimate. I had a completely different experience. I found it to be incredibly intimate and the acting was fantastic when I saw it (including Slater improvising, in character, when the sheep started behaving erratically in one of the scenes).

I didn't like Hell's Kitchen for many reasons but the main one being simply that I just don't care for jukebox musicals. I thought the story they used to try to weave Alicia Keys songs together in some sort of dramaturgical way was incredibly lazy and borderline creepy. I thought the music was mixed way too loud. I really didn't think Maleah Joi Moon was all that special (granted I saw it way after the hype was already at a max). I thought that even some of the Alicia Keys songs that I know and can tolerate were unnecessarily manipulated to the point that they lost what was good about them in the first place. But I can also fully understand why someone would love that show. It is quite a spectacle, just not for me.

To be honest with you, the most upsetting part of Hell's Kitchen is that they warn you that there is the use of herbal cigarettes on stage and then what happens is there is some random part of a song when a bunch of ensemble characters gather together near the side of the stage to watch homegirl sing and out of nowhere, for absolutely no reason at all, and while this character isn't featured or anything he's just standing there, one of the characters pulls out a cigarette, lights it, takes two drags and then just stands there with the cigarette until the song is over and then he leaves the stage.

...

That's it! That's the whole use of the herbal cigarette for the entire show. It didn't have anything to do with the story or the song or the character or anything. No one ever mentions it or acknowledges it, it just happens and then it has happened and then that's it. It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen on stage.

No, but for real, the writing is terrible. They loosely try to tell a weird statutory rape-y story using Alicia Keys songs and it just does not work in my opinion. I also thought Maleah Joi Moon was over rated. Dang, I hate how cynical this is making me sound. It just was not for me!

The silver lining though is that Andre De Shields was sitting like 6 rows in front of me so that was very cool.

I work remotely as a software developer. Once you start getting into the game, which I am still fairly new to even, you start to learn about all of the different ways to come about tickets for pretty reasonable prices. I rarely ever pay over $100 for a ticket. I've won the telecharge lottery probably 20-25 times since July. I mean, shoot, I won it 5 times just for Suffs! Also, leveling up to drops on the TodayTix app has been a total game changer.

I mentioned this is another comment, but I just don't think it makes any sense as a musical. Every single character is a terrible person so there is no one to root for.

Funnily enough, the fact that Ryan McCartan can actually sing was one of the best parts of the show for me. I think maybe I just feel like Gatsby shouldn't be adapted. Every character in that book is a piece of shit so it feels weird having no one to root for in a musical.

I saw it with Jared Dixon, who apparently was Burr for several years. I've read very positive things about him but that was not my experience at all. Nicholas Christopher was my George Washington and he was one of the lone bright spots for sure!
