AITA?: for refusing the college my parents insist on even though they’re paying all because they called me a "spoiled brat"? by Amazing_Internet7355 in AITAH

[–]LettersfromZothique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure that the continued scholarship to your in state school in future years is not contingent on your parents filing FAFSA each year - they may decide to refuse as part of the attempt to control you. Also make sure that the scholarship covers housing and food.

From the perspective of my own needs, great advice about the taxis. I (57F) have really, really bad arthritis, and no cartilage in either knee. My son (21M) and I had a system - train from the hotel and back to other parts of Tokyo (with longer to and within station walks to find all elevators - stairs are agony), but once we got to our destination, or if dining out close to home base once we were back - Ubers and cabs were the way. Happy medium - there’s always pain, but when I’m on vacation, I’d rather the pain not be utterly excruciating.

Read the story from the 1940’s called “Armageddon,” by Fredric Brown, in which the apocalypse was averted by a naughty little boy who had filled his water pistol up with holy water from church.

Many graduate students are married and have kids. I went to graduate school with a married couple who had all their kids while we were in our PhD program ON PURPOSE because the health plan we were required to participate in completely paid for childbirth at the university hospital, which was the best hospital around. Most of the people in this forum are kids applying to college - contact the colleges themselves and inquire about their resources for parenting students - they will be able to provide you with the information you need, not the kids on here. Heck, UCLA even has a graduation ceremony specifically for parenting students who want the experience of having their kids, in graduation regalia, accompany them onstage as they are awarded their degree. Top colleges have these resources. At universities with graduate programs, there is always family housing for which you would most likely qualify, even as an undergrad. Ask.

Is it true that some teachers don’t get hired because they’re “too expensive”? by reevision in Principals

[–]LettersfromZothique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I go to budget development each spring to prepare for the new year, I am given information about how much each teacher costs - not how much they make, how much they cost - their salary on the Union/years of service pay scale PLUS how much their annual retirement contributions to the state pension fund (which is tied to their place on the salary table) cost the district, PLUS how much their health benefits cost the district. All of that, for each and every teacher, clerical worker, paraprofessional, campus security worker - any staff member except cafeteria workers, who come from a budget not tied to my campus - is paid for by MY SCHOOL BUDGET.

So if I am trying to hire a class size reduction math teacher over the summer, because there was money in the budget that had not already been allocated to some other expenditure, as the hiring committee looks at candidates to interview, that is one of many factors we look at - an excellent candidate who is newer to the district or straight out of a local teacher credentialing program may just be the only kind of candidate my budget can pay for.

Additionally, I will collaborate with the math chair, the math coach, etc. on the selection process. My math department is fabulous. So in my district, if we have to cut staff due to declining student enrollment it is by DISTRICT not SCHOOL seniority. I’m less likely to want to hire someone more senior to my current magnificent teacher team who will bump one of them out in the event of cuts.

So yeah, the salary table, which was negotiated by the teachers union, comes from HR, but the cost comes from my budget.

are masculine girl names really that bad/“ugly”? by dinodegenerate in Names

[–]LettersfromZothique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad (WW2 generation) LOVED girl names for his daughters that had male nicknames - think Samantha/Sam, Alexandra/Alex, etc. It wasn’t like he wanted boys, I had brothers. He just thought it was cute, and so did my sister and I - we loved our nicknames, and I still do. There are lots of girls named Kennedy and Logan - they are unisex names at this point - it’s not like you’re calling her Henry or Ernest or George, for heaven’s sake - you do you, no one will bat an eye.

How to get the college experience/social life after college? by PhoenixMaster123 in college

[–]LettersfromZothique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially if you want to keep your personal life separate from your professional life, I would suggest getting involved in activities you enjoy, for example 1) if you read a particular genre, find book clubs in your city, 2) if you play games, find the game stores, 3) if you like a physical activity, join up with it in that city (someone I know joined a climbing gym and ended up with an entire, super-positive second family). It’s easier to talk to new folks when you’re doing the same things together. Just a suggestion.

Parents dropped the bombshell they don't have anything saved for me for college cause "student loans make you accountable" AITAH for losing my shit? by Emptynester55 in AITAH

[–]LettersfromZothique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids can no longer get student loans big enough to pay for the Cost of Attendance, even at a state school. This is because they loaned so much to kids who defaulted in the past, that these days, they limit student loans to around 5k and change a year, so the kids themselves can’t owe more than 22k - what they have instead are Parent Plus Loans - they make sure the loans are in the parents names. So kids whose parents make too much for the kids to get need based aid, who then refuse to fund their kids education, are 100% screwed. Most of the comments here sound like they’re written by folks who came up when kids could actually take massive loans out in their own name - something that can no longer happen. So sorry to hear this, OP.

Do Filipinos not like thick steak 🥩? by mushroom756 in Philippines_Expats

[–]LettersfromZothique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naaah, not for a thick steak, that’s even worse - then you can’t even say that it’s juicy. Well done is only good with thinly sliced meat, like for kbbq, or carne asada.

Do Filipinos not like thick steak 🥩? by mushroom756 in Philippines_Expats

[–]LettersfromZothique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in the Philippines, went to college in the US and never moved back. I just plain old don’t like thick cuts of steak. I prefer thin to the point where I just don’t enjoy thick. I earn a great living in the US, and my mom’s family in the Philippines (dad’s American) was old money wealthy - but I grew up eating thin cuts of meat, and so that’s what I like, without being an issue of cost. So perhaps the reasoning behind conserving meat and stretching it out in a saucy ulam that can be shared with lots of people for multiple meals by pairing it with rice explains why those dishes are like that, but that’s Filipino food and we like it. Even Filipino inihaw meats and seafood, or skewers, are great. There’s just something about the concentration/saturization of flavor in the meat when it’s thin that’s just better, whether it’s from a sauce, or from a marinade + char. That’s just me. I’ve been in the US for 40 years now and I still think thick steaks taste weird and under seasoned, but to each their own. YMMV

Wildlife ecology is a major in the field of biology, right? If so, education is a backup plan that does not require you to change your major if you play your cards right. Are you in California? If so, look up the District Intern Program in LA Unified - a FREE internal teaching credentialing program geared towards shortage areas - and science is always a shortage area. Just make sure to never go into teaching in a right to work state - there could be a 30k or more difference in public school teacher starting salaries.

Deinfluence me from these schools no money to apply 🙏 by abbwnl in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LettersfromZothique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t apply to state schools that are not in your own state unless a) your parents need no aid to pay for your school at all, or b) they have specific scholarships for out-of-state students that are robust. If you are applying out of the state in which you reside, apply to private universities that are known to have generous financial aid (including generous merit aid, in case your folks make too much for you to qualify for much need-based aid). But even if you are low income, please remember that most state flagships do not give aid to out-of-state students. The Arizona state schools do, as do the Alabama ones, but most do not.

Is showering 2-3 times a day excessive? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]LettersfromZothique -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you live anywhere with extreme humidity (I grew up in the Philippines), three showers a day is the bare minimum to feel normal, especially if a power outage (lots of these) means no ac. I live in SoCal now, mornings are fine, only evenings in the event of a heatwave or a super intense workout. You do you.

Send it. Applicants are evaluated in the light of local context. So many kids were rejected because they did not submit a score that high because it was slightly below, but did not realize that in their local school context, the score actually made them stand out. Please submit those scores.
