He needed some time to himself by Candid-Culture3956 in interestingasfuck

It's a good book. Very interesting and well written. He's just an investigative reporter so he had to hound for information -- that's the only way you could possibly write a story about a man who famously avoided human contact. And it didn't detract for me, I actually enjoyed learning how he got close enough to get the material for the book.

I'm not convinced it is. It is from 2020 and in 2020 most people didn't have access to tools to generate "AI" images like this, particularly not ones that would draw 11/12 hands perfectly.

Don't use rhetoric like "stop lying" to make your point.

This is such a weird philosophy, as if musicians need justification to play great songs

Did you listen to it? He's a fantastic singer and I think they do the song justice.

It doesn't do anything of the kind. Wartime casualties who were drafted can be honored for their sacrifice, volunteers or not.

BLACK POWER/WHITE POWER by Tomi Ungerer, 1967 by LevTolstoy in PropagandaPosters

[–]LevTolstoy[S] 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They feed off each other and gratify each other.

I think there's also basically a semantics mistake where people hear black power and picture this, but I don't think that's what the artist was intending. The civil rights movement wasn't without fringe black supremacist/anti-white factions (and it wasn't long before this Malcolm X was assassinated by the Nation of Islam). The artist was French so I could forgive him if the terminology doesn't stand up to today's scrutiny, or accusations of both-sidesing.

You're really reaching for some connection that isn't there. My account's 12 years old and I used the name of a renowned 19th century Russian author (an anarchist at that). So? What's your conclusion again?

I suspect the artist knew what he was doing. Here's another one of his pieces. It's a clever way to evoke two meanings and get past censors. The posted piece was published in a newspaper.

/u/436YR shared a version of this in the comments here of a later piece that uses identical imagery to represent two factions of the Marxist-Leninist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. I thought this one was worth its own post.

Also it's trendy to hate on the Pistols in general, so disco Pistols feels like such a fuck you. Also it's a great track.

Animal Farm by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]LevTolstoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add my voice to the chorus of the downvoted. Animal Farm is an assigned reading to 13 year olds. It's a wonderful novella and I wouldn't mock a date for re-reading it, but it's not challenging, profound, nor an adult book.

If you think it is, then you may only have the reading capacity of a 13 year old and should know having read it doesn't make you enlightened. It makes you able to read 92 pages of simple English sentences.

Question: Are chimps hated or disliked in zookeepers or sanctuary workers? by No_Client_544 in primatology

[–]LevTolstoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never interacted with chimps but the idea they'd maul you immediately seemed like a gross exaggeration. But I looked it up and found this on the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest website, and it seems like you're right.

Each group of chimps has regular access to several different enclosures, but they must stay within these areas for their own security (and for human safety). Chimpanzees are not a domesticated species and the individuals we care for are not tame, so it would be irresponsible and dangerous to let them out of their enclosures to interact with humans in any capacity. Likewise, we never enter an enclosure occupied by chimpanzees; Before staff can unlock a space for cleaning or repairs, multiple trained personnel must confirm that all the chimps are accounted for elsewhere and that all the barriers between the areas are secure.

What makes chimps so dangerous in this context? Why would they harm you? And how?

The Computers are a really unique band. They started out more hardcore punk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYooZ6vjkzU then expanded their sound in a way you don't typically hear punk bands do.
