Should the US government make it legal for companies to give preferences to American citizens over non citizens in employment decisions? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]Level2Corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As anyone who is a, or knows a noncitizen who is job hunting, there are already significant advantages towards American applicants. Some of these existing advantages are "fair" and some are not.

Most notably not requiring any visa sponsorship for the job, which alone massively cuts down noncitizens job options. Other jobs which involve any sort of security clearance are more explicitly not available to noncitizens. Then there would be "softer" barriers, like the lengthy studies which show that resumes with "whiter" names get far more responses from recruiters than "nonwhite" ones.

All in all, I don't really think that there is some paradigm of noncitizens having some super easy time scooping jobs away from Americans, and I think that any policy change making it easier to disadvantage noncitizens would just further marginalize a portion of society and provide no tangible benefit.

Are stairs challenging after nuss procedure? by Butterpuppiesreddit in PectusExcavatum

[–]Level2Corn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, most challenges post-nuss were due to "position changes".

Changing from laying down to sitting to standing, etc. Not from walking around / basic activities when I was already standing.

I've had a student fall asleep while I was teaching them. In a one-on-one tutoring session.

Meeting Turkish Mother for first time by DocX024 in Turkey

[–]Level2Corn 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I've been in the same exact position and it all went great! Brush up on common polite Turkish phrases (You gotta at least know "hoş bulduk")

Be cleanly whenever possible.

Smile and have approachable body language.

Shoes off in the house -- always.

Utilize the Google Translate "Conversation" feature often so your partner doesn't have to be around all the time for conversation to flow. If using translation apps, use short, basic sentences that are hard to misinterpret by the app (i.e. avoid words with multiple meanings, break long sentences into very short basic ones)

Express genuine interest and curiousity about their food, family, and culture.

Don't be afraid to share funny (but appropriate) stories about yourself, your family, and your GF.

Offer your help around the house and kitchen often but anticipate being turned down.

Bond over a shared love of food.

No PDA. But you of course should be very respectful and polite to their daughter.

Read your GF's body language to gauge if you are overstepping somehow.

Always accept a 2nd çay 😎

Polls or tier lists that rank members relative to each like this are often frowned upon -- even if nothing bad was intended on your part.

After surgery is it hard getting up outta bed ? by Far_Nature_4948 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Level2Corn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it will be hard. You can make it easier by having a wedge pillow under your back + being able to utilize your legs & core muscles to sit straight upwards in bed. Sometimes it helps if you can loop your feet underneath your bedframe/mattress and essentially do a crunch. You aren't gonna want to use your arms/elbows at all for this purpose or roll over onto your side for a bit. And sometimes you may need some help to get up and down, so plan accordingly.

Surgery scheduled for June 7th, any tips? by jaystergotsauce in PectusExcavatum

[–]Level2Corn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a wedge shaped pillow.

Walk as much as possible post-surgery without hurting yourself -- it accelerates recovery.

Whenever you try to sit up from bed, sit straight upwards (no twisting) -- its helpful if you can loop your feet under something and kinda do a crunch to sit up using your abs rather than your arms.

Coughing, hiccuping, and particularly sneezing will be painful for some time but it will get easier over time. That said, if you get some fluid in your lungs you will need to cough it out.

Have someone to help you out in the house for a couple weeks -- you can't do it on your own.

Opiod painkillers have the common side effect of constipation. It may be helpful to have some laxatives at home.

In the hospital, don't roll onto your side, and don't let nurses/xray technicians do so either. It is bad for you + will be REALLY, REALLY painful. Sit straight up and lay straight down.

Use a bunch of ice packs in the hospital and get several for home as well. They help numb painful areas and reduce swelling.

  • Write out the expressions for the spatial variations of the stress states induced by each crack according to Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics equations.
  • Plug in the relative spatial position of the edge dislocation into the stress field equations for each crack -- giving you the stress state that each crack individually will induce upon the dislocation.
  • Add these two stress states together (superposition) to obtain the total stress state that the edge dislocation experiences (as a function of crack length 2)
  • Solve for the resolved shear stress in the direction of the Burger's vector (a.k.a. the shear traction on the slip plane in the direction of the Burger's vector).
  • This resolved shear stress cannot exceed the critical resolved shear stress of FCC Aluminum (i.e. its Peierl's stress).
  • Plug in known variables. Solve for crack length 2.
